Lyrics:
Just a castaway, an island lost at sea, oh
Another lonely day with no one here but me, oh
More loneliness than any man could bear
Rescue me before I fall into despair, oh
I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
A year has passed since I wrote my note
I should have known this right from the start
Only hope can keep me together
Love can mend your life, but love can break your heart
I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
(Oh) Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Walked out this morning, don't believe what I saw
Hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore
Seems I'm not alone at being alone
Hundred billion castaways looking for a home
I'll send an SOS to the world
I'll send an SOS to the world
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
I hope that someone gets my
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Message in a bottle (Oh)
Message in a bottle (Yeah)
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
I'm sending out an SOS
I'm sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS
Sending out an SOS

I remember listening to this song on the radio during a hurricane back in 2017.. i was 6 while my mom was doing laundry. I would keep asking her about this song while it was playing. I just now decided to relisten to the song again.. she died February this year, this song brings me tears now. Ive only heard it once or twice and yet i remember it like it was yesterday. Pretty good song.

Copelands drumming, so original and brilliant. As a drummer myself he's just insanely talented. On the second verse he doesn't use the snare once, very rarely done. The rimshots and little licks are brilliant too. There is multi tracking on this but his basic drumming is awesome.

that's why if guys are intelligent enough that wanted to make it in pop rock, then study everything you can; mainly jazz, which got more important than ever in the 80s to have something else to fall back on. one girl i was involved with briefly in the 90s, didn't like his playing, and i knew right off the bat it was because she didn't understand what he was doing at all. so, you can have the brains and talent, but you still need to understand how to make something like Stuy's drumming work.

Every Breath became the most widely pervading legacy due to its poppy quality, covers and remixing etc. Message in Bottle, also quite poppy, remains a solid and pretty popular radio song. But Roxanne is THE iconic song. In itself, it is simply out there on its own. It broke the norms and established the band as unique. Still, Walking on the Moon is, for me, the most sublime.

Replying from the Future- its Summer of 2023, (Prince and) Morris Day & the Time's '777-9311' being broken down by drummers led me to 'the Pocket Queen' who had THIS song as one of the top five that influenced her. I hadn't noticed how Copeland's drumming changed throughout the song, I'd always concentrated on Sting's Bass playing. Now, I'm gonna go back and (re)listen to it again...

Well worth listening to some bootlegs and video footage of early live recordings of them playing this song in 1979, and the John Peel BBC studio version which has a magic of its own- such an outstanding composition and band effort- the studio recording is just absolutely brilliant (I wish I knew what exact date they completed it)- incredible vocal and lyrics, amazing drumming and rhythm, wonderful guitar parts including the lead licks at the end- one of my favourite ever pieces of music!
