Hey everybody! Hope you liked this video on white rappers. I think this is a really interesting topic and I'd love to hear your thoughts down below. Between Eminem, Macklemore, Mac Miller, El-P, Jack Harlow, and allllllllll the other white people in hip-hop, let's discuss! Do you think that there's any kind of privilege in rap? Or do these guys have it harder than most? Let me know.
White / rappers / problem / hip hop / Eminem / Jack Harlow / Mac Miller / El-P / frat rap

I like jack, but he has quickly become over rated. Just like tyler herro. They are good, but because they are white, their white fanbase will over hype them, because white people like rap too and when they see someone that looks like them they feel connected to the music. The same for tyler Herro. I like how jack also critiques his fans, who only likes him because he is a white guy that can rap because he doesnt want to he seen like that, he wants to be seen as a rapper and have the respect, but the court of public opinion doesnt care about that, the majority of the public will act according to socially acceptable things that's always how human society was and will be.

In my opinion, if you can talk about Action Bronson and his niche, you can put Aesop Rock and Slug in that category. Aesop and Slug have been around longer, Slug built his record label, and Aesop is one of the most intricate wordsmiths. They both came out of the same underground movement as El-P. El-P didn't get a lot of recognition in the mainstream until he and Killer Mike formed Run the Jewels, which isn't even mentioned.

It's interesting that white fans of white rappers get so defensive. I don't fuck with people who shame others for liking white rappers... But, at the same time, just admit it. A huge reason why white people like Eminem is because he is a white guy in a predominantly black industry. Same for basketball; people liking Larry Bird. It's cool.

For eminem i feel like he wasn't really accepted by the existing community but was able to get widespread success commercially due to the fact that he was more marketable to white people who is the vast majority of the US. The thing is with Eminem though is that he is actually talented which lead to the existing community start to slowly accept him over time. It is hard for white rappers especially in the early 2000s to get credit for how good they are from the existing hiphop community but was a lot easier to get credit from casually listeners and is why em has always done really well commercially
@nox2sweet
@nox2sweet 5 місяців тому
No disrespect, but I don't think I agree with the not accepted by the hip hop community as Em earned his stripes and respect in battle rap and had the backing of Dr. Dre early in his career, which could only come from people respecting him. But In regards to Eminem having talent, easily one of the greatest of the greatest to ever do it.

But what tpab stands for and it’s lyrical content is just on such a higher level than any album of Taylor Swift. I’m saying this again I don’t hate Taylor Swift I’ve listened to some of her songs of her past album and enjoyed them but lyrical content isn’t subjective.

I think being able to relate to rappers is a huge factor, too. I listen to some german rappers and most if not all are a minority in germany I can relate to as someone who is an immigrant themselves. I can't listen to Cardi B when all she rap about is being rich. Macklemore is just not the culture I am in and Eminem is closer to what I went through as the only polish kid in school. I love Kendrick because he talks about shit I care about, and on and on. I love Nicki because she doesn't flaunt her wealth too much but disses rappers, I feel connected as a woman in rap to her. It's quite hard to explain, but I guess you could boil it down to: People with privilege will listen to people who rap about privilege.

If something is associated with an ethnicity (being apart of the culture) then yeah, if you're mocking the culture then you shouldn't partake in it. Some people do mock a culture. They do this by taking what made something great in a culture and distorting it to the point of unrecognition. This is bad because instead of giving homage to what you've contributed your success to, what usually comes out is a bastardized, low quality, corny/cringy, soulless product. This is what people mean when they say culture appropriation, while I believe that it has been used out of the right context a lot, making it lose it's meaning, I still believe that a lot of people do it. Some of this stuff makes sense but as for Eminem. You can't claim he used "being white" as a booster for fame. Eminem respected the rap game and worked his way from the bottom. The reason Dre signed him rather than some other record label is, quote by Dre "everyone was racist against Eminem for being white and trying to join the rap community". They basically thought since he was white he didn't belong in the game. But Dre signed him and the rest is history.

I think Yeat is respected because he has a distinct sound, but also has clear influences. He's also innovating on trap music a LOT and that's why he's so popular and no one has said anything about him being white at all.

Eminem deserves everything he got imo. But I ofc agree with the white America point, but I wouldn't credit all his success to him being white/having a white fan base. Awesome video. Honestly an awesome viewpoint of the subject, that while it's easy to notice the artistry of any race or genre its difficult to appreciate or notice the privilege of those groups as well. I will say a big part of this is also what people call mainstream or not. I think many of the names you mentioned enjoyed the current mainstream sound of their time and therefore played into it, meanwhile rappers like eminem make their sales off of the nostalgia points gained by "Em's classic sound". All of it just kinda culminates into people who rap for the fame and not for the game. All in all, great message, and yes, I think the rap scene is and will continue to level out especially after the 2016-19 era of rap. Influential rappers that brought rap to the mainstay genre it is today, rapping off the shoulders of giants from the 90's and 2000's. As a final note I'd like to throw one more rapper in the mix. Mike Shinoda of both Linkin Park and Fort Minor isn't readily considered a rapper, and considering the eventual genre position of Linkin Park, it makes sense, but I felt he really brought an artistry to rap and lyricsm, and grinded as much as any other to prove his place, and eventually found a sound that brought rap to an even further and wider audience without disrespecting the artistry of others. JayZ, who ended up doing the Encore remix of Numb with the group, has commented on Mike and his work before, commending it. And while a little corny to some, Mike's group Fort Minor made Remember The Name and other songs and albums that brought up many underground rappers but still became quite popular by way of just being good songs. Just a notable mention.

This is a very Gen Z "I wasn't alive to understand the context and times, but I want to speak on this" perspective. Claiming that Eminem is only as wildly accepted and popular because he is white is bullshit. I have no problem with conversation, but comparing Jay-Z and Eminem is stupid. Eminem put a lot of work and time and positioned himself in ways throughout the years to achieve the success he gets now. I understand why children don't get that, because y'all weren't alive, but that it absolutely not the historical context. Eminem has also inspired an entire generation of rappers, other artists and many, many people from all walks of life across the entire planet. It goes deeper than just "he's white." Most of the world isn't White. P.S. DOOM also really only exploded in the underground after Em's prime.
@skepticcat2443
@skepticcat2443 2 роки тому
@@simonbright2975 No one is saying Eminem is only popular due to him being white, but him being white is a huge and undeniable factor in his colossal commercial success, it gave him access to an entire untapped demographic that would otherwise not listen to hip hop music, especially during the early 2000s due to gangsta rap being the dominant form in the mainstream, I agree that artists like DOOM or Freddie Gibbs aren't the best pick to compare since their works were never radio friendly to begin with, but even if we look at artists like Kanye or Kendrick, both people who made some of the best records in mainstream hip hop, we can still see them overshadowed by Eminem's extremely average later works in the 2010s, hell Macklemore won the grammy over those two, if that isn't indicative of white privilege I don't know what is. It's not so much about Eminem himself, it's more about the audience that listens to him and why they do so, I guarantee you a majority of people who listen to Eminem are completely ignorant about the history of hip hop or the classics of the genre, Eminem is all but musically a pop artist, he is treated like one by the mainstream, and even he admits so in his own words, the quote is right there in the video.

Saying Eminem isn't respected in hip hop community is such a joke while you can see people on forums and youtube comments disrespecting him most top rappers really respect guy.From best rappers of this age like Kendrick and Cole who openly said that he was one of their idols to goats like Rakim who said that Eminem was great lyricist.That part really rubbed me wrong way and I'm not even big Eminem fan but guy went through the hell his whole life to get here and now people on internet are disrespecting him like he didn't do anything for culture.

The East Village/Tompkins Square Park was a real meeting place of the tribes: Punk, Ska, Hip Hop, Reggae etc. The Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, Bad Brains, The Toasters, Fab 5 Freddy. @H Flores There will never be another rapper like him period. Em's his own thing when it comes to his niche, and no white rapper will reach his success because the stigma of all these race-baiting rappers who rap just to ride off the white rapper gimmick will stick with them, and none of them will accept the fact that they got a boost from white fans who want to see a white guy rapping on stage. They won't accept that those people exist. And if they do, and they accept that they do have an inherent advantage on startup, some still won't handle it well. The reason Em is still respected is because he acknowledged it but didn't feed it. unlike Tom McDonald and all the other shitheads who DO feed into it today. It's about the art, and the sooner someone stays true to that as a white guy, the sooner people will be cool with them. Otherwise they only get white fans who are too afraid to listen to people like Vince Staples or some of the older shit because It makes them uncomfortable based on their skin.

Going by the comments, they're probably not in the creator's favor-- unless he has a loyal fanbase of like-minded people who go by a person's race when judging their skill. There are probably 5 to 10 white rappers I thought were black before seeing them. Most of them are famous. I just learned Yelawolf is white, probably because of Best Friend. Most of Eminem's features are black, so I just assumed he was. The list of white rappers that are at the level of Eminem and members of NWA is short. I’m a white guy but I heavily dislike most white rappers mainly because they try and follow the same stereotype that Eminem started, the reason why Mac Miller is so respected, loved and never gets the “he’s the best white rapper” treatment is because he separates himself from the stereotypes, you don’t have to be like “i like black people” or “I don’t like white people we take stuff” to be accepted, if anything people will push you away just like Macklemore, on another note though, not every white rapper has to “acknowledge privilege” because not every rapper is American and that’s just facts, and as for white people supporting white rappers that’s fax but that’s normal, and tbh most fans at any rappers shows are white whether the artist is white or black and they get criticised for that, but white people are allowed to be big fans of white rappers and saying it’s “weird” is a weird thing lol, sure they’re more drawn to it but don’t try and overanalyse something that’s just not even there

I think you made a lot of good points about the white rappers who cater to white people, successful white rappers having more success, etc. All of your points pertaining to the sad truth that there is a disparity between white and black rappers are spot on. However, rap (and music in general) shouldn't be color-gated at all. Music is about expression and feeling, and anybody who has the ability to make music should be able to make the music they want, regardless of their skin color, regardless of their struggles, or lack thereof. I do 100% agree that music that isn't genuine and authentic is objectively bad, but music is fluid, and ever changing, and doesn't care about color or status or anything like that. Idk if its because I'm in the metal scene, where artists of every color are accepted without question, as long as their talent is up to snuff (for the most part, we got some rotten eggs just like every community). I don't think the roots of a specific genre matters all that much, as long as the music and the artist is genuine. That genre is being used as a medium, its not an entity of itself. You should be able to use that medium to tell the story you want to tell without repercussions, especially because of skin color. Some of the best vocalists in the extreme metal genre are black and hispanic. They all had different lives, some had it easier, some had it harder, but they still tell the story they want to tell on a level playing field. Their lyrics and music are valid regardless of their lifestyle, their status, etc. and its always been weird to me how this is only really an issue in rap.
