No, land is not a sailboats friend. Once you set sail you have only two enemies, big waves and rocks. Deep water is your friend, wide oceans are your sanctuary. Be very weary of heading for shore in a storm. The shore is rocks. You are sailors, you must let go of the shore, and learn to stay safe in big waves. I was a delivery skipper for 20 years. I never left the dock without a proper sea anchor, (Pardy style) ready to deploy from the cockpit. Your beautiful boat will carry all of your dreams to the top of every wave and beyond. Always have a sea anchor, and never race for the shore. Write that down.

What is a sea anchor? And what are your thoughts on Droges?
@charliemcgrain
@charliemcgrain 6 місяців тому
A sea anchor looks like a parachute and works like a massive brake in the water. Use a sea anchor when you want to stop as much of the boats travel through the water as possible, if you were being pushed toward a lee shore, for example. While a drogue is similar it can be used to "moderate" the boat's speed, depending on how much of it is paid out. It just creates drag. A big old car tire on the end of a line can be quite effective. It is worth having both. You will find youtube videos on all of this. Happy sailing! @@sailing1stwatch

Even dying at sea is much better than living a non-life of unquiet desperation on land. I plan to buy a Cheoy Lee 33 ketch, 48 years old, and sail off into the sunset. And encounter no end of grief. So be it.

So often, with costal cruising, one is thinking that you need to make the destination achorage by nightfall, so you end up motoring all the time. But when you are doing the big puddle jump, it really doesn't make a lot of difference as to whether the passage takes 4 weeks or 6, so you might as well just chill and accept what mother nature gives you.

Imagine adventuring through these conditions, makes the next four years seem like sweet honey, mangoes, and the smell of the local ports you journey, a worthwhile trade off. little hint that might help you guys out, when cooking bacon, cut strips in half, they are easier to handle and the cook faster which means less gas use ... when trying to use cutting board or trying to fix a plate of food when seas are ruff, put a towel down and it won`t slide allover counter ....... Hi guys. Catching up on your videos. Was watching when you struggled with your asym. You might have gotten already but just in case. You really need a shackle that releases under load at the tack. You release it and the sail blows away from the boat and you can shade it from wind with the main. Stay safe.

Hi there! Thanks for the tip on the shackle. We will have to pick one up the next time we are somewhere we can source it.

It would be nice to see you guys secure the dingy upside down on your fore deck. Many sailors have lost theirs by big waves ripping the them off along with the dingy davits, Great video and hate that you both got sick one after the other in the first week that had to be tough for sure. All the Very Best. Jim Rodgers

Hi Jim! Yes, we thought long and hard about this. Our issue is with our dinghy on our foredeck, it is in the way of our staysail. We opted to be able to use our staysail and risk the dinghy on the davits.

Much respect for your mental strength and your high quality relationship. I only imagine the bond and experience of achievement it might be. I enjoy watching 2 natural authentic souls that have taken responsibility for life quality and love. Happiness is in my opinion the leftover feeling by the right life choices and peace and balance between body, mind, soul. wich is an healthy energy body . I understand the circumstances combined with not feeling well is mentally challenging. I have to say something positive about it. Your body was never sick, its preventing getting sick. Its and detoxing cycle you both triggered by the circumstances . Love from Holland

Thx for sharing this voyage , i will say in the strongest terms to always have your life lines clipped in and if you think this is to much to do going forward for couple minutes think what your partner is going to go through waking up and finding you gone , thousands of men have been flicked off by a sudden lurch of the sea don't be one of them be safe , the other thing you might consider is don't sail downwind go off course 15/20 degrees , it will save your auto pilot and you , pretty obvious your boat doesn't have the keel an beam to run downwind in comfort so why push it , put it on a long reach and tack , will be less wear and tear on the boat and you , and you may even get there faster , you have the hopes of an old sailor for your safety 🙂 Godspeed
@SailingOneLife
@SailingOneLife 8 місяців тому
Thank you! Not sure why we weren't clipped in, we had the lines ready and everything! We did try running 15-20 off the wind but with the big swell our Genoa kept collapsing and wouldn't hold wind.
@pl7868
@pl7868 8 місяців тому
@@SailingOneLife Nothing to be done about the swell on a small boat , the direction it comes from makes a difference and it will change along with the wind , sailing is making friends with sail changes , sea and wind , the Pacific is a large ocean , if you get tired run even 40 degrees off get a rest , you don't have to have the genoa up to make the same speed over time if with a smaller jib you can run 125/140 miles or mess with the genoa and in fits an starts make 150/170 , do you care ? happy you txt back about being clipped in because i have gone over board racing and watched the boat sail away and been picked up by a boat behind us , i have been swimming my whole life and watching a boat sail away from you and thinking now i have to tread water till i can't is not a happy thought . your hitting weather from the southern ocean , our weather has been changing , Wish You the best of luck 🙂

First time viewer to your channel - hats off to you, not easy sailing conditions - just a quick tip for future trips you should buy the little rubber mats that you can place under your chopping boards to stop them sliding in swell - work a treat on my boat. Can’t wait for more!

We had the exact same rug! Those ocean sunsets and sunrises are amazing. Put those flying fish on a hook or in a frying pan. I can't imagine going across the Pacific. Thankfully I have never been seasick, but it's just too long at sea for me. Good on you for conquering it!

It's on now! From the frying pan into the fire. So far you two are doing great through the challenges. Those flying fish, when they're even smaller than that first one you showed, are very colorful and remind me of the fancy guppies in a pet shop. Safe passage !
