The Rise And Fall Of Macy's

Macy’s was once the largest department store in the world. But its size is now a burden. It’s closing stores and rethinking its strategy going into its most critical period of the year.
Macy's is testing smaller stores to slash expenses on staffing and inventory. Currently, the department store chain is trying the idea at four locations, including at Stamford Town Center in Connecticut, to cut its real estate by as much as a fifth there and turn those shops into "neighborhood stores." It mimics similar initiatives already taken by rivals Kohl's and Nordstrom. Kohl's is dividing some of its bigger stores to allow room for new tenants like grocer Aldi, while Nordstrom is trying a small-shop concept known as Nordstrom Local in Los Angeles. Even mall operators like Macerich are looking at store space in a new way, rolling out stores that showcase a number of brands for a short period.
"If your store is too big and your dollars per square feet are too low and you can't lease the space to someone else, then you've got to hive off a floor," Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette told the Journal in an interview. "If we were building stores today, we'd build them smaller."
Not needing so many locations - and with some being unprofitable - Macy's in early 2017 shut 100 stores as it's been working to whittle down its real estate. It's also been working with Brookfield Asset Management to allow the real estate firm to redevelop all or part of 50 select properties. Macy's had roughly 690 locations, including those under the Bloomingdale's banner, still open as of the latest quarter.
Macy's "neighborhood stores" will reportedly have more self-service options and an area dedicated to picking up online orders. It's unclear what Macy's will do with the space leftover after the store shrinks in size. A spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.
Macy's, meanwhile, has set aside about 350 of its more productive stores to get a facelift, including expanded merchandise, remodeled dressing rooms, Starbucks coffee shops, couches for lounging and more, Gennette told the Journal. He said sales at these newly renovated "magnet stores" are surpassing expectations already.
Macy's is set to report fiscal third-quarter earnings before the bell on Wednesday, when it is planning to discuss its real estate strategy in greater detail.

The success and failures of department stores give me mixed feelings. On one hand, department stores are giant corporate boxes full of crap no one needs and symbolize everything I despise. On the other hand, department stores can give off a certain warmth and excitement... there's nothing like passing through one in early December, when the decorations are out, the window displays are a show, and each department is organized in perfect displays of the nicest things.

may edwards a lot of people do. The big issue is that people go to the stores, but don’t buy anything. They just buy items at a cheaper price online from a retailer who can lower prices since they don’t have to pay overhead costs on hundreds of physical locations.

Me too. I was at Ross recently looking for a hoodie for my son. Men's sizing is weird for teenagers so buying online was too risky. I hadn't simply gone shopping like that in so long I forgot how fun and joyful it felt. Running my fingers over the rack of coats and inspecting each one for design, price, and fit. Such a simple pleasure. If only I had more money to spend.

Exactly. There is room for both avenues of retail. For clothing/shoes/handbags, I like to see the quality of what I'm buying and how the sizing of the garments fits on me. For these reasons, I shop @ the mall. (Macy's/Boscov's etc). For all my other retail needs, online shopping is fine.

There are so many purchases that I don't make because I can't afford them. Not just luxury items, but necessities. Amazon undercuts brick and mortar stores, sometimes taking a loss just to do this. And since half of all American workers earn $30,000 a year or less, we shop from Amazon because we need those savings. But the depressed wages in this country are killing big businesses. It's not just because of Amazon. People don't have money to spend. There are so many purchases I would have made at stores in my own town if I only had the money.

I’m a manager at Macy’s. I love working there, but customers can’t comprehend that we are just as, if not more, frustrated by lack of staff than them. I very frequently have to put my jobs and responsibilities on the back burner to help give breaks to my colleagues, cover if they need to leave early, bust lines, whatever is needed. We can’t help that the company thinks cutting staff is the way to save money. Every one in my store is overworked, and under payed. I worked for Bon Ton until it closed its doors, and I love working for Macy’s, but so many people won’t shop with us bc of our lack of staff, something that anyone below a corporate level can’t control. And I can’t even fathom how much we lose in our store, overriding coupons and giving percentages off just to keep customers happy

I purchased a few sweaters at Macy's a couple of days ago. The sweaters were put in a small plastic bag no thicker than what you find at the grocery stores, or dollar stores, today. I noticed it immediately. Sure, Macy's saves money using the cheapest bags, available today, but at what cost? It's an image killer. You don't package high-end merchandise in cheap, everyday plastic bags.
@thuy__

@archiestanton2767
@archiestanton2767 5 років тому
@@thuy__ Well sure. My point is this move to cheap plastic is an image killer for Macy's. Walking around the mall with a cheap plastic "Wal-Mart" bag with a big red star is a far cry from those white paper bags or quality paper shopping bags (with the paper handles) Macy's used in days gone by. Those paper bags conveyed the Macy image of class, and quality. Sadly, the Macy executives are now sacrificing those qualities in favor of saving a few pennies per sale by using plastic. Carrying a Macy's bag around the mall, to be seen by other shoppers, besides being a great form of advertising for Macy's, conveys a special message..."I bought it at Macy's."

This isn’t about on line sales. This is about sales associates and management who have forgotten that the customer is their primary focus. They have also done away with key departments that were their points of difference. Petites, better dresses, suits, and coats. Classic rainwear. Heaven forbid you should have to be professionally dressed or special occasion dressed, you’re screwed. This all chips away at the prestige of the company. Shopping on line only goes so far, if you’re a perfect size great, but nothin replaces the service in the fitting room. You will never convince me that you can buy a bra online unless you’ve already been fit for it. They don’t size their clearance racks so what the point of looking? I have to paw through the mess? This in itself is a gross margin tragedy. They take out the gourmet department because it’s not making money. It’s on the second floor. Bring to the main floor adjacent to the parking lot. Now their selling mattresses when you can buy them anywhere. Who are these merchants? Train your people and care about the people who pay your salaries. Us. I’m over it.

Most times I'd buy stuff on Amazaon because it can be around $100 cheaper (i.e pull behind trailer for a bicycle.) Sometimes the store doesn't have what I wanted in stock and idiotically has not created a digital inventory system for the employees to search using a computer to see if the item is in stock in the store, unlike Amazon and better brick and mortar stores (i.e. computer peripherals.) Most stores even big franchises have small profit margins like only between 1% to 5% profit. If even just a small percentage of people buy what they want from Amazon instead of what they would've otherwise bought in a brick and mortar store, that can have a significant effect on many stores profit margins

After I tried to find the item for one hour, I decided to leave with no purchase at all. On Wednesday, I happened to have time to go to another Macy’s store and found out everything was on sale. I did not have a clue that was gong to be the case. I wish I had known in advance. When I asked questions in the store, all I got was “I do not know”. Imagine every mall or brick-and-mortar shop as a location for a bunch of kiosks and touch-screen panels where customers only visit to digitally browse the shops inventory and receive an order. Imagine restaurants, with kiosks, instead of servers and waiters; Fridays have implemented this and so has McDonald's. Physical products are on limited supply and like a carpet store/furniture store, everything is arranged as displays only.

The culture Macy's worked so hard to create can not adapt as quickly as society does in general. Too big. (and cheap house brands i.e. Inc, charter club and Alfani). Each major city could have their own unique products i.e. Minneapolis Macy's or Beverly Hills Macy's would have demographically accurate unique inventory to enforce the "destination marketing" they so desperately hold on to. They also need a CEO who is under 35. Just facts people.

I remember getting coupons for Macy’s. In the fine print on each one you could never buy anything you actually wanted! It would list everything of every brand and any type of jewelry watch and anything else you actually wanted to buy for a good price. All they pretty much wanted to sell was there outdated crappy clothing. That was pretty much with those coupons were for.

I don’t mind shopping at Macy’s, but there was this one time where ALL the fitting rooms were closed. I was running all around the floor trying to find a room, and i finally did find one that wasn’t closed, but they only had one room (the other was for handicapped people only and was locked with no one inside). No employee was around either, and if you wanted to pay for your items you had to go on the other side of the store or go up one more floor....never going back to shop there again 🙁

Everyone talking about the high price of Macys is thier downfall.. I find that hard to believe when millineums are buying gucci flip flops and kanye west sneakers for thousands of dollars..500 dollar human hair lacefront wigs and fendi socks. Spending hundreds online with FASHION NOVA and ordering Channel bags. Its the fact they (Macys) have not relocated to the ONLINE market from department store. They need to advertise differently too. It's not that young ppl are broke. Its that the dont want to have to go into a big ass dept-store to shop!

@theylied1776
@theylied1776 5 років тому
The 32% increase for Macy's is a direct result of the (South Dakota Vs Wayfair) case and eventual Supreme Court ruling on June 21, 2018. Amazon must collect sales tax on all sales, so Amazon is on a more level playing field with Brick & Mortar retailers like Macy's. Amazon saw the writing on the wall in 2017 concerning Sales Tax so they self-imposed this policy company-wide Feb 2017.

@rspen2142
@rspen2142 3 роки тому
There is one main common factor with a lot of retailers and other failing companies that may not lie with the retailer at all. It is, that the mass majority of people are not buying because paychecks are not matching inflation. If people have to make a choice between shopping and paying their bills, I would hope paying the bills take priority. I, personally, along with most people I know do not buy clothes from Amazon. They buy them from places like Macys. I am not a business savvy person, but here is a hypothetical: If people are taking their money to shop online, wouldn't that still be Macy's or where ever else they already liked to shop? Then those funds would still be distributed through that company as a whole. My guess is, yes. So, if the company is suffering, it's because people just aren't shopping like they once were. Another thing could be customer base. Older people do not shop as much as younger people. However, each time I go into stores such as Macys and comparable stores, they seem to only cater to the older shopper. Each year an older generation passes away and there is a newer older generation as well as a newer middle aged generation. They need to stop catering to dead people and cater to the newer older generation. Most older people, now days, are more trendy and do not want to feel old.

I think Macy's needs to select better clothes to sell for their younger clients. Whenever I go there, the young women's section is just full of clothes my grandma would want me to wear. Maybe if they sold Show Me Your Mumu instead of Justin Bieber merch, they would have better grip on the new target audience.
