Remember the Discovery Channel store and the Imaginarium? No better places to find cool gifts. I re-visited my old favorite mall for the first time in a decade, and was pleasantly shocked they still had a Spencer's and a Claire's in there. But even that visit was like 2 years ago, so who knows now.

This! Everything feels so sterile. Off white paint and no soul. Same with outside the mall too. I remember pizza huts and taco bells had unique buildings. Now they're all square and plain.

Mainly laziness of the ruling business class. They can make millions doing virtually nothing- just copy paste the same old designs- send jobs overseas, make money. The rent is insanely high for mall stores. Yet I don't see how it can cost that much to build or operate a mall. Seems like they expect insanely high profit margins simply because they made them in the past- then everyone wants in on it so they built too many malls. Then the second thing is mainly its all clothing stores. Even if an arcade or something opens up they eventually go under because of the insane rent. It would make sense to put a bowling alley or Dave and Busters or something at the end instead of a SEARs or whatever. The mall around here the restaurants are the only thing doing well in it. The business class aren't smart enough to figure out that activity based shops would do well also. Even the clothing stores I seldom see interesting clothes. The items they order seem to all be on auto-pilot- no thinking involved. I could go online and find more interesting outfits to put on display at these places in many cases. Similar when I worked at restaurants- none of the managers would actually managed, even though they got paid good salaries. The workers get paid poverty wages and have to both do all the work and also take on all the management duties. If there is a problem you have to resolve it yourself- manager doesn't manage. Schedule aren't written right- either too many or too little schedule so you have to adjust when you get there- some go home- or call in extra help or do the job of two people, bad workers never get fired, good ones never get promoted. The "manager" just copies and pastes everything they did last week- its all on autopilot. When I contact the business owners like- your business is being severely mismanaged. It means a lower quality product when I want to buy something, it means I make less money and have a miserable experience when I work there and it means you make less profit. The owners just get annoyed at me- they could care less since they make huge profits sitting back and doing nothing except own the business. Then they pay big salaries to manages who sit back and do nothing and the little guy is left living homeless while working a full time job and expected to constantly compensate for the lack of leadership anywhere. I'd say we need to tax inheritance so that more of the ruling business class get there by merit instead of inheriting the position. And then also pay people a living wage and offer free or affordable college to anyone who keeps good grades. And offer $2,000 checks for anyone who is on welfare and will get their tubes tied so we can limit the amount of idiots being born each year. Then have a merit based immigration system. It would manifest itself in non-obvious ways such as the fact that we'd have more businesses that are well managed and less malls dying.

People "just hanging out, even if they don't intend to buy anything" is what leads to store closings. A store doesn't make money off people hanging out, and that's what most people did at malls. Guys certainly didn't buy much at malls, because they were 90% clothing and shoe stores.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of one suburban mall that has one... and even it still has extensive parking lots around it as well. I can sort of get that it doesn't "look pretty", but honestly, acres of feet blistering asphalt isn't attractive either, even with the rare forlorn tree here and there.

THIS! This is the real reason why malls are closing up. The mall near my house, I never go to unless I'm out and about working side gigs (Uber, Grubhub, et all) and need a place to use the restroom due to a grocery store being further away. My mall is still up and running (was closed for awhile due to the pandemic.) and ALL it has is clothing stores, jewelry stores, and food stands. Oh and the odd shoe store. The only store that I'll even walk in to browse is FYE. Back in the day it was gamestop, etc. But now that they are the most hated store on the planet, there's really no reason to go to a mall. Malls are for highschool girls, and their accompanying boyfriends/friends who just want an excuse to hang out with a hot girl. As that's literally the only crowd they cater to now. HS girls going on shopping sprees and the guys go for eye candy the entire time. Once you get out of highschool, the mall is an extremely boring place. Well, until your a senior. Then you spend all day at the mall at JCP, or Macy's. (Seriously the amount of senior customers I see at my local mall macy's could fill a damn nursing home.) Hell that's the only reason why I go to a mall in my off time for a bit. People watching. There are still quite a bit of girls 21+ who frequent malls. And just like walmart, girls seem to dress extremely slutty. Almost as if it's a requirement to enter the mall. "Um, ma'am, I'm sorry but you don't look slutty enough. We can't allow you inside. Please change."

@Kurogane -sensei Back in the 90s, used to be the same way here in the US. At least in the areas I've lived in. You could guarantee a really unique stand was waiting for you at the mall. Hell there was this one stand that sold anime figures. I'd convince my grandfather to buy me one every time we'd go to the mall. And I'm not talking cheap figures either. I'm talking $100+ each visit. Absolutely loved that stand. Of course being a kid, I destroyed or lost all those figures. And of course, given who's company I was in, I wasn't allowed to buy the risque figures. But I'd definitely look at em out of the corner of my eye.

Malls are a bit boring in my opinion. Most of them no longer have book stores. They sell the same kinds of low quality clothing and shoes. There isn't much interesting to do there. I can buy stuff from home. I'd rather spend my time elsewhere.

Here in monroe county, Rochester regional health has been using parts of the malls for emergency care. While it’s nice the space is being used, it feels more like a locust infestation rather than a revitalization of vacant space

They have car parking, but teens can get to them via walking or public transport too & basically if teens in particular want to go out ANYWHERE with friends, they will be passing or in very easy access of a major mall in teh process, so it motivates them to go there. Here in the Philippines, so many malls are awesome, mainly because of affordable prices as well as entertainment leisure. Not sure why people still care only about shopping in a mall rather than having fun in a mall like watch a movie, playing at an arcade or playing Bowling. Heck, many Bowling centers in the Philippines aren’t dying too because they’re in malls as well and even the ones aren’t in malls were still in good shape til this day.

You have that reversed actually. Amazon has invested millions, if not billions, into major local warehouses in various countries, so as to try to make a dent in the shopping market, but no matter what they do, they simply cannot compete with the convenience of well placed & managed malls. Online shopping only takes over in countries that have crappy malls, ie the US

Yes I remember a time when malls (we call them shopping centres in the uk ) had more independent stores back in the 80s, shopping was kind of more interesting experience back then as each store was unique. Would be nice to see them again and independent shop keepers rather than chains.

Once this country recovers from the pandemic and opens its northern border again, I'm moving to Canada, their middle class is still going strong, and they have many more shopping malls per capita.

The new aesthetic, influenced by Instagram, TikTok and other social media apps makes it hard for fast fashion brands to keep up, since they still think, that people are interested in skinny jeans and graphic t-shirts, when in reality- people want something stylish for affordable price. Therefore, people choose internet shops as an alternative. And as a designer myself, I see no problem in making stylish affordable.

Here in Chile the malls are located in the city center or close to important commercial zones and I think that malls in USA are away from them. Pd. Sometimes the malls are close to important mass transit station.

I went to a mall in Vietnam, back in January and it was so crowded that it was impossible not to rub up against someone. I cannot speak for the rest of the world, but Vietnamese malls were not experiencing this problem. So it may just be an American problem.

Brands, I think? If you're going to buy Michael Kors, most people wouldn't go to target. Same thing for jewelry, perfumes, etc. At Target, you expect cheaper, everyday things. Though I would say, online shopping is nice at Macy's because they often have great deals on expensive stuff (like getting a $300 jacket for $50).

I am also Gen Z (23), I don’t enjoy going to malls. They’re pretty far away from my house and they aren’t that fashionable in my opinion. Cost probably $20-$30 to get an Uber ride to the mall from my house. I’m also plus size so there’s no guarantee that I’m going to find something to even wear since there are max 4 stores I can shop at and two of them are grandma stores. I’d rather shop online because I can take my time and save my money, compare prices, plus there’s always returns.

As a teen in the 80s, I can tell you you missed out on a lot of fun and friendships that could only be found in that setting. Not on social media or some app. People really are spending their LIVES looking at their "smartphones."

I live in Asia and our country just built ten new malls in 2017/2018, and I'm like "How you gonna sustain that shit in the age of online shopping?" In Asia gyms, parks are inside of malls. It has to do with the fact that US is sooo spread out. It's more convenient to have it delivered rather than driving far away just to shop. But in Asia you live above a mall.

Absolutely! Why would one shop at a mall when there's so much more to browse from home? The only reason I go to my local mall is for groceries and toiletries - the mall wisely has a Trader Joe's and a Target, two stores I'd go to anyway. But I don't browse the other shops in the mall.

All the malls where I live or where my parents live don't have any. I went to one many years ago, South of Springfield I think, and thought that is what these other malls should try. The only mall that I go to with a somewhat built in movie theater is in Gurnee, and it's mostly for the 4DX movies.

Most malls don't have theaters anymore. Theaters have wised up and separated themselves from the mall industry. At least in my state. I think there's ONE theater in a mall and it's located 4 and a half hours away from my city.

Here in the Philippines malls are the place to go to watch movies, I've never seen a stand alone movie theater here. My mom says there have been stand alone theaters before but they're now all in malls

How much office space is needed though? I recently moved from the city to the suburbs and there are so many office buildings, and I would imagine some of these people could work from home, but why are so many office buildings needed in a place where there is little to do.
