True. The Swedish Royal Guard serves the crown, not the actual person even if the crown and the King is the same while alive. But even if the king dies, let's say he has a stroke mid-battle, the Royal Guard will protect his body and the crown until they are in safety or die trying. It doesn't matter who sits on the throne, the title is what matters.

I loved that touch. It also underlines the fact that you're defending the history, future and present of an institution and that your duty is to serve as the protector of the head of state - something that is bigger and more grand than protecting a specific person could ever be.

Technically true, but the video also depicts what most makes sense as the time the Royal Guard attempted to protect King Charles the Twelfth from the Ottomans when he was about to be arrested.

"i frid och i krig" means "in peace and in war", this song celebrates the Swedish royal guards 500 years birthday. The video itself shows the Skirmish at Bender in the ottoman empire, the king had fled there after the loss att poltava and then lived there for quite a long time until the people there had enough of him living of their lands and attacked and forced him out. Also "för Sverige i tiden" is the current kings motto, and means "for Sweden in time" and the other one "de gör vad som synes omöjligt" is the Royal guards motto, meaning "they do what seems impossible"

Yes, its from the Skirmish at Bender, where the swedish king Charles XII stayed for a couple of years, living at the ottman sultans expenses, trying to get the sultan to declare war on Russia. After a couple of years, the sultan got tired of his nagging and basically told him to gtfo, which Charles refused. The video is "Skirmish at Bender" but the lyrics is about Livgardet. Livgardet is swedish royal guard and the song is a tribute to Livegarder celebrating 500 years in duty. "marching cross the belt"= When the swedish army went from skåne in sweden during winter crossing the ice on the belt over to denmark "Chrushing blow at narva dealt"= Battle of narva. It was 1800 swedish soldiers vs 37000 russians and sweden went victorius. 667 killed on the swedish side and between 6000-8000 killed on the russian side.

The Royal guard was founded 500 years ago by the Swedish king Gustav Wasa and was originally 16 men to protect him and developed into a regiment (one of the oldest still active battle units in the world). The reason for the crown on the throne is to display that the royal guard protects the crown regardless of king or queen sit upon the throne. They also mention ”marching over Belt” Belt is the waters around Denmark and there was a famous battle there between Sweden and Denmark. They also mention ”Narva” and that’s a place in Estonia (today) there the Swedes won one of the greatest victories ever, Russia had appr 30000 soldiers and Sweden 10000 soldiers. After the battle Sweden had lost less than 1000 soldiers and Russia lost appr 10000 soldiers and 9000 captured. The meaning of ”fred och krig” is ”in peace and war”. Thanks for a great reaction.

The event potrayed is called "Kalabaliken i Bender" which I'm not really sure how to translate. Kalabalik in Turkish means crowd but has become a "borrowed" for in Swedish which can be translated to confusion or a big mess. Basically after the battle of Poltava Charles XII and roughly 1500 Swedish soldiers escaped into exile in Ottoman Turkey. They became guests of sultan Ahmed III and were spoken highly of. However, the cost of having them there become more great and they tried to ask them to leave nicely as debt and threats from Russia soared. On February 1st 1713 they had enough and tried by force to remove Charles XII and his soldiers. 10.000 Turks against 700-1000 Swedish soldiers. Approximately 40-45 Royal Guards (Livgradet) defended Charles XII and managed to hold of 600 Turks single handedly. Famous Livgardet Axel Erik Roos is said to have saved Charles life 3 times that day. The King and surving soldiers were captured and after some time in captivity was realeased after the Ottomans learned of the Swedish victory at Battle of Gadebusch

The Royal guard of sweden got 500 a old. So they orderd a Song by Sabaton for the 500 a Party. Sabaton worte the song and the Royal Guard chose a other. Sabaton had a Song for the Royal Guard and decided to publish it.

Just want to mention that the song mentions the crossing of the Belt, which is one of the most epic moments of Swedish history. As you may know, Denmark mainly consists of islands (and a peninsula) and the waters dividing the main parts are known as Big and Little Belt. One winter the Swedish army found themselves stuck by Big Belt. It had frozen over, so no ship could come and take them to their destination. But then they tried the ice and found it sturdy. Perhaps sturdy enough for an entire army with cannons, horses, supplies, etc. to cross on foot? Evidently yes. And thus the the obstacle was turned into a road to punch Denmark in the face. Everyone else has hit on the big things in the comments. This song isn't meant for a new album, btw. It was made for Swedens five centennial in 2023 (1523 we broke out of the Kalmar Union, which is seen as the start of modern Sweden), and they consider it an extra track for their Carolus Rex album.

The Royal Guard was a military entity as much as they were life guards, Swedish kings had a habit of fighting in the midst of battle and Livgardet participated in many of Swedens greatest military triumphs. As people have already said, the video itself depicts the skirmish in Bender, where Swedish King Charles XII resided in exile after the defeat at Poltava. He was initially an honored guest but after disagreements and his famous Iron will the ottomans tried to arrest him, resulting in a fierce close quarter skirmish where the king and the Royal guards fought for their lives. After a while though they could not withstand the overwhelming force and got captured and Charles XII spent the rest of his time in the ottoman empire in house arrest.

My understanding is that "Livgardet" and "The Royal Guard" are actually two different songs, just using the same tune and both in honor of the Swedish Royal Guard "Life Guard" which have been in service since 1521, which makes them one of the oldest military units still in continuous operation (they're the 7th oldest on the list, beaten out by the Papal Swiss Guard in 5th and the Moroccan Royal Guard in 1st just to name a couple). The Song is generally about the Swedish Royal Guard, especially during the time of Charles XII of Sweden (Carolus Rex) and the Great Northern War...hence the Remark about "Crushing Blow at Narva delt" in regards to the role they had in the First Battle of Narva. The Video itself is mostly a reference to the Skirmish at Bender (Sometimes called the Kalabalık at Bender), where King Charles retreated to the Ottoman Empire after his disastrous Russian campaign. The Kalabalik was a relatively small affair, with some notable impact. Notably, the Swedes spent a good 5 years in Ottoman care, and despite the rank and file (and Charles himself) got along great, it's hard to justify to the treasurers why they're having to pay for a Foreign King's continual vacation...especially after the brutal defeat the Russians gave them. This wasn't to say that Carolus didn't want to leave, it's just that he had to take into account that all Europe wanted his head adorning their mantle after the rest of the Great Northern War and the general perception is that the Swedes were broken and could be overwhelmed as soon as they crossed the border. Finally, enough was enough and an order was given to arrest the Swedes and deport them. The Swedes didn't think it was real at first and shot into the air to frighten the Turks, who still kept coming. The bulk of the Swedish army surrendered shortly after that, leaving a handful of the Life Guard and King Charles himself. They barricaded the house in which they were staying and wracked up a butcher's bill on the Ottomans, leading the latter to change tactics and try to burn them out (Hence the Fire in the Music Video). Eventually they surrendered, but Carolus had achieved something. He'd demonstrated that, even outnumbered as the Swedes had been, they were not to be trifled with, allowing him and his forces to return to Sweden and begin his new conquest (Which ultimately saw him shot dead, whether by war-weary Swede or Norwegian defender, is still unknown)

Great reaction! 🤘 The video shows the story of the Skirmish of Bender in 1713. Carolus Rex (Karl XII) fled with his army (or what was left of it..) across the border of the Ottoman empire, after have been defeated by the Russians (Peter the Great) in Poltava. The Swedes stayed in Bender for about 7 years. The Ottoman nobles wanted to get rid of the Swedes, because they were a major expense for them. The song mentions in the beginning, the founding father of Sweden, Gustav Eriksson Vasa, (Gustav I) who was Head of State during the Liberation war against the Danes in 1521-1523. He became king of Sweden in 1523-1560. During the Liberation war he had 16 loyal men as bodyguards. They were the first Royal Guards of Sweden. This unit is the oldest, active military unit in the world. Greetings from Sweden!🇸🇪 💪

the scene in the clip seems to depict an event with Carolus Rex. Following the disastrous defeat at the battle of Poltava, the king went to seek refuge in the ottoman empire, where he overstayed his welcome. The sultan expelled him from his lands after some strong pressure from the Tsar. (I think Charles also grew into a bad guest during his stay, which didn't help his cause.) The music video might be about his escape from Ottoman expulsion. The channel extra history made a series about the great northern war, and one of the last episodes touches on that event.

The battle shown is the skirmish at bender in which 8,000 ottoman soldiers were sent to remove the king of sweden, Charles XII, from ottoman soil. The king and about 40 Royal guards as well as a small company of Swedish soldiers stood against them and the royal guard killed 400 ottomans, the king himself is confirmed to have killed at least one ottoman soldier. The ottomans eventually set fire to the building they were in to flush the swedes out, and the king was eventually captured.

Cool thing is the English version is a prequel to the swedish version. And this song is about the swedish guard and their 500 years of service to the king of Sweden. The scenario is during the great northern war. Swedish king Carolous Rex is in the ottoman empire and they were attacked by a small contingent of ottomans to get them out of the country. Its more complicated than that but thats the gist of it.

"The melody is based on a Christian hymn know as "Härlig är Jorden" (Psalm 297) in Swedish. It seems like the hymn came about in melody as a folksong in Germany and was called "Schönster Herr Jesu, Herrscher aller Erden”. It was later in the 1850s changed by the Danes and called "Pilgrimssang" or "Dejlig er jorden" and is probably how it spread to Sweden. In English the melody is known as "Fairest Lord Jesus"." Even as dane I feel how great a tribute this song must be, and what kind of pride the Swedish Livgarde must feel when they hear this song. Just a info for those non-danes/swedes. In the swedish version of this song "Livsgardet" They also mention about Lund which are a famous battles against the Denmark. The Battle of Lund in 1676 (in mordern day Sweden, but at the time in Denmark). Were one of the Bloodiest battles in Nothern History, and if you take in consideration that Denmark & Sweden hold the "record" of having most wars with each others (England - France are second) it does say something. The battle ended with Denmark retreated to Landskrona, but Sweden could not take advantage because of the heavy losses. The Belts part was when Sweden marched over the frozen water in Denmark and took the danes by surprise. Because the danes had expected the most logical way was going from nothern Germany and up through Jutland through the Island of Fyn, and if was near Fyn the danish forces were ready make a stand against the swedes. But the swedes as mentioned walked over the frozen water and avoided the danish forced, continued through Sealand and lay a Siege upon Copenhagen and when truce was made, Denmark had lost a lot of its land to Sweden (most of it is still a part of modern day Sweden).

The swedish army themselves asked them to do it, but then changed their mind but joakim was like "Fuck them, we are doing it anyways"

There is a story from the late 17th century when the King Charles XI (11) had an heated argument with one of his generals, and suddenly rushed out of his office and ordered the Guards soldiers outside the door; "Shoot me this dog!" The Guardsmen fell to their knees and stared at the floor until the king had calmed himself. When he did, he gave them each a gold coin, and said; "I have the best guards in the world. They protect me from anything. Including myself."

The story in the vid is about the Skirmisher at Bender (the song is fully abort the Swedish Royal Guards but the supporting video is about the Skirmisher) A bit of background to the event: During Charles the XII (Carlous Rex) reign he decided to invade Russia and like almost everyone who does left in defeat. Due to the condition of his army and the fact the Russian were pursuing him hard and had blocked him off from Sweden, he made for the Ottoman Empire for safety. The Ottoman Emperor accepted him as a guest and set about treating him well until he saw his army fit enough to leave home. However, Carlos being the young, cocky and arrogant man he was began to overstep himself to the point of very much annoying the Ottoman Emperor who told him politely to “leave”. Charles decided to just ignore this in that “make me” type of way and so the Ottoman Emperor did by sending a small army to evict him. As such a Skirmisher broke out between the Ottoman forces sent to detain the Swedish King and his royal guards.

History: 16 men became the first royal guardsmen of the Swedish crown around the 15-16 hundreds and have served for the passed 500 years defending the throne though are more ceremonial now. Song history: I’m guessing it’s Ottomans getting to the throne room and were going to take the castle or something.

It looks like Charles XII to me with thoose soliders (karoliner). "Livgardet" is todays regiment off the traditional kings guard. They where supposed to have guarded the founding king of modern Sweden Gsutav Vasa starting in 1521, hence the 2021 celebration. The lyrics mix different eras. The "Livgardet" still exsist and have a few thousand staff I think (not all gaurding the King off course).

The first heraldatery king of Sweden Gustav Wasa went to Dalarna in order to gain support for overthrowing the occupying Danish King who were occupying Stockholm in a time after Sweden left the Kalmar union. Some historians say that is the beginning of the modern Sweden, but there are older constitutions from a time when the King was elected, so it is not clear that is the true beginning of Sweden.

This is a depiction of the skirmish at Bender where around 40 of Charles XII's (Carolus Rex) royal guards defended him against the ottomans. The reason why the throne is empty may be a symbol of that they would protect the king, the crown, no matter who it is.
