The unfortunate thing for all who trained in the soul society was that the quincy had front row seats to it due to existing in the shadows. The only ones who were the exception, were those who's bankai's hadn't been shown in the past 100+ years i.e. vizords, kisuske, shunsui or (spoilers: ●●●●●●) those who trained outside of soul society had a better chance.

Being strong is always relative, you may be strong compared to some, and weak compared to others..Just Remeber these opponents -you blame Renji for being weak against - were able to beat Captains, so in a word this statement of " Renji is still weak after 17 months" just doesn't make sense ..
