Well that is literally what it’s for in the comics.

And maybe it is also a visual illustration of despair (the feeling, not of the Endless), snagging, scaring a person. You know how you feel despair, hopelessness or fear, you have chills up your spine, or a dropping knot in your stomach, or all those other unpleasant feelings? That could be Despair's hook, taking away from your original self and scaring you. Just a thought.

"Take away the despair and there is nothing left. Nothing but an empty room, and a hook of the perfect shape and size for snagging your heart." The hook is a representation of Despair purpose in the universe - to sow the despair yes, but not without reason, despite what Despair may think - it is being spread, so people can overcome it. So they can see the meaning to the madness of their own suffering, and from the recognition of it, gain Hope. Without despair, without recognition of own misery, one can never start hoping for anything more. Thus, without Despair, all suffering is meaningless - a hook, cutting flesh for no reason.

@@Drakhesh That is literally the very reason why Despair indirectly created Superman. She was the one who convinced Krypton’s star to create life on an unstable planet. Just so the planet could die and just one life would survive. Escaping to become the very embodiment of Hope itself.

In the original she's entirely naked, so... for some people, yeah. Also, excellent example. Despair is shown at one point supervising the Black Plague and being really satisfied with her work.

And how a lot of the ways Desire and Despair interact kindly aren’t required by ritual- they just choose to. Desire chooses to _ask_ if Despair will talk when summoning them- we see later, Dream holds Desire’s sigil to summon them, and simply says “Talk to me.” Desire chooses to ask Despair politely. And we see Dream come straight through to Desire’s dominion without permission when he’s angry at them. Meaning Desire could have tried to come through to Despair’s dominion without permission when Despair answered the summons, but instead chooses not to, and invites Despair in to Desire’s dominion. They are both so old, and have been together so long, I’m certain their relationship is still complicated. But they clearly trust each other, and the ways they _choose_ to be kind to each other, not out of requirement but choice, are highlighted by the contrast of Desire and Dream’s relationship. The Endless don’t all have to be nice to each other. So we see how it means more when they are.

I hope they don't fail to cast an actor for Delirium. The hair will be hard to do. And I don't know if they'll wear the same somewhat revealing outfit from the comics.

Definitely up there as one of my favourite stories and it directly challenges the concept that dreams are the pale shadows of desire and despair

I read that the Endless etc were not truly in relation with the rest of DC Universe (but I didn't read the comics). Dream etc were also on Krypton? I mean, not as in hypothetically, but as : has it been said?

@@lexysraymont9627 Well it was never revealed if Dream ever visited Krypton, but he and his siblings must have knowledge of many worlds in Universe so he must know Krypton and also many Kryptonians must have go to the Dreaming during sleep, before all of them died.

@@lexysraymont9627 Spoilers they were, in “The Wake” u can see Darkseid, Superman and Batman in the dreaming attending Morpheus’s funeral, and in the early issues Morpheus meets Constantine, Martian Manhunter and miracle man, in one of the issues Despair was talking to Rao Krypton’s god, and to note dream doesn’t visit every single planet as everyone who dreams visits him in the dreaming, he only visits planets if he have to.

@@bbobbytorres It would say it is ambiguous, actually. One thing that comes out later is that the Fates hate Dream, but are unable to touch him (unless he kills a family member). He also can summon them, though it costs a price. One thing that you always have to keep in mind with Gaiman's work is that multiple things can be true. There's a bit in the... I want to say second book, where the Fates appear in Destiny's garden to deliver a prophecy. Destiny is puzzled, so he consults his book to conclude that destiny requires that the Endless meet together. But as is pointed out by Desire, The Fates ARE destiny... but so is Destiny's garden, and Destiny's book, and Destiny himself. Elsewhere, it's stated that Dream's castle is the center of The Dreaming, and yet Fiddler's Green is also the heart of the Dreaming, and at another point Dream must TRAVEL to get to the heart of The Dreaming. And Matthew even comments on this, saying it makes no sense. But it's Gaiman. Everything is true, (unless Gaiman wants something not to be true for a moment), all gods are real, reality is mutuable. So. Are the Fates more powerful than the Endless? Yes. Are the Endless more powerful than the Fates? Also yes.

@@arthursouza9641 Not fully, they do change a little, such as Johanna in place of John, Mervyn appearing earlier than he's meant too, and some other things that are removed or added. Desire isn't even meant to appear until Lucifer attacks to the Dreaming yet here their part was introduced far earlier.

Well given the nature of Desire’s character…it wouldn’t feel right for them to have an English accent. It’s like if Dream spoke American. It would just feel weird. Death could get away with both though.

Could be that they wanted to make Desire a less likeable character to the audience. An American accent on a antagonistic character does tend to increase animosity to them from a western audience. Like Gaiman’s other TV series, Lucifer, Tom Ellis has stated that he originally used an American accent for Lucifer but he came across as as a huge A-Hole. When he switched to an English accent, Lucifer was still a huge A-Hole, but most people were sympathetic to the character.

@@darrenhemingway7121 Difference is that Neil Gaiman’s Lucifer is *supposed* to be a massive A-Hole and isn’t supposed to be sympathetic. It’s one of the reasons why that show is hated so much by Sandman fans and why Gwendoline’s version is so much more accurate to the DC comic book.

@@thomaskilroy4573 if you are going to spend millions of dollars on a new tv series of a comic book with a arguably limited fan base, investors will want a sympathetic lynchpin main character, so it can be sold to a wider audience. Morpheus easily fills this role for Sandman, but I cannot imagine that Christie’s version of lucifer would engender the same wider audience. At least until a few series of Sandman has come to pass.

I wished the cloth-wearing Despair was bit more miserable-looking - she looking too cozy, warm & well-dressed in that outfit with only heathy hair compare to her comic book look of 1000 different levels of depression, dishevel & bloated while naked with yuck mouth teeth.

I am not. At all. Her nakedness made her seem far more serious than the others, somehow, more primal. All the others dressed for dinner at the beginning of Season of Mists. But not her. That was like she was saying "Yeah, dressing up. Games for children. I'm me, deal with it."

if it follows the comics there should be a nice family dinner in season 2, where we meet Destiny and Delirium as well

I'm not sure anyone does, actually. Dream is the only Endless shown to have inhabitants in his realm, and that's largely just because Dream wants people in his realm and creates them to populate the Dreaming.

Despairs realm is just a giant void full of windows that each show the other side of ever mirror in existence. Despair just sits there staring back at the people who see their reflections and long for anyone to help them, cutting herself with her hook and refusing to aid them in their depression and torment.

There are rats in Despair's realm.

Death only has 1 creature in her realm Destiny has those weird ghost things and sometimes random gods and superheros come in and out Delirium has Everything

I don't agree at all. I think she's far more dignified in the comics. And I don't see that she was ever a sad sack in the comics. She was freaking scary in the comics.

Desire is much more intense and at the moment than dream. That is the reason why some evil deeds stems back from desire because of its intensity; people tend to be irrational. While dream is subtle and gentle, it gives room for reassessments

Well now I understand why their mother Night told Dream that he and Desire are same.

The difference is subtil but important. Desire is like a longing, something that plays on your emotions, but ultimately you can say they are not what your innerself wants. They only speak to the greedy part of your mind. Dream is like Morpheus said, Hope. They are what a person truly wants inside, what they'd whish for their future. Dreams are more pure and revealing of the soul, while desires are revealing a current state of mind out of events of life. Desires are temptations, dreams are aspirations.

we desire because we dream. or alternatively, we dream because we desire.

The difference is desire here personifies something you will never have while dream signifies a reality you want to achieve or hope to achieve.

I think that song would work better for a scene in the final chapter if the series makes it all the way.
