I really enjoyed the story about Hob. I wasn't expecting a side story immediately after he was visited by his sister Death, but Hob's side story was a refreshing break and really brought the original story to live.

I just can't get over how everything in the show is connected. To the little black girl that fell into a comma in episode one to the little baby that's gonna be born. This show doesn't need 4 or 5 seasons. Just give it 2 or three good seasons and you will be in the pantheon of some of the greatest television shows of all time. This show is so unique and so enchanting and deep. Like I'm kicking myself for not reading more of Niel's work and reading the source material. I love how all of this is connected to the DC universe. With Constantine and Lucifer. Businesses need to stop these property BS. They are really missing out on easy cash grabs. It would be great to have seen Matt Ryan and Tom Ellis's iterations of Constantine and Lucifer in this series. But this series is perfect anyways. The static shock call outs hit my heart so deep!!

I need more of Morpheus. Great character. 2nd season they should bring him to a Cure concert just so he completely blends in to the crowd. The entire season I just kept thinking of Cure songs seeing him.

Episode six is my favorite, so far. The scene with the two benches next to each other when Morpheus feeds the pigeons, reminded me of the show "After Life". Coincidentally, that show also deals with death and 2 main characters regularly sit side by side at the cemetery while visiting their spouse's graves.

It's been a while since boba's been this positive about a review. I absolutely loved it, they were so faithful at adapting the comic and somehow warped some stuff into being even better than the comic. I hope they adapt Dream Country, my favorite volume, but I kinda have doubts they would cuz Morpheus is barely in there. And I think they're changing Lucifer for the show cuz him leaving hell has already been done in the Lucifer tv show

I always assumed that Death didn’t help Dream was bc she knew his fate from Destiny. I do like that Dream was too stubborn to ask for help and would’ve been unappreciative

Excellent review, I do agree with everything. In regards to the cast: they are spot on. From Dream's poise and subtle growth as a character, Death's kindness and joyfulness, Constantine being Constantine and The Corinthian's rockstarish charisma... When it comes to the narrative, I liked the episodic approach and the changes made to the story. My favourite episodes where 3, 4, 5 & 6. Finally, I loved the discourses on the human condition, the show is thought provoking and touching.

When it comes to immortal beings or just these ancient ones in media I was never convinced that they are what they are. Dream, the actor and the writers sold me on this perfectly. How he talks, how he acts and just how he looks like makes me believe that he's been here since day 1.

I just finished all 10 episodes. Normally, when I watch series, it's 3 episodes max at the time and yet Sandman made me stay up most of the night only to finish first thing in the morning. Everything was very captivating. And I hope there will be a 2. Season

I am almost in tears because I can't believe how good they've adapted it 😭😭😭 it is so refreshing to not even be pleasantly surprised, to be very excited and nervous about something and to be so well rewarded. This is a gift. Everything you said about Tom is absolutely fantastic, just perfect. I really can't picture anyone else ever playing Dream now. It's a 10 for me. I've already rewatched 3x

Completely agree episode 6 is my favorite episode. Lucifer is just amazing the way she can be accommodating then reminds you I am the ruler of hell. This series just everything I wanted it to be and more.

If they do this at Disney Marvel they could actually win back the audience that is trying to denounce the new direction of the MCU. The Marvels definitely needs more high concept stuff since Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel and Photon aren't popular.

I think that dream being “one note” is fine because when u think about it this whole season is dream becoming more human and understanding them more which makes the character have a clear path for growth which is dope cant wait for season 2z

I really liked it, there were 2 things I really remembered and wanted to see which were the family dinner, where Dream decides to go to Hell and there was an awesome panel somewhere about Dream travelling through dreams, sitting on a bus, walking down a beach, riding a horse. those two were missing, the second even seems perfect for the screen though. I liked seeing Barbie's dreams, curious they didn't do that but it was fine.

The former - the family dinner - isn't in the first 2 volumes, which the first season covers - but the 4th volume. So it wasn't really missing, and it's sure to be there in a potential season 2, because it's a pivotal moment in the comics. The latter - that particular version of Dream's travel through dreams... I guess you're likely thinking of his travel to Mayhew where the ruby is hidden, where he's in a bus (Merv Pumpkinhead is driving it), but riding on dragonback, rather than a horse. That was indeed missing - a few other similar sequences were missing too. To be frank, I wasn't so much missing those sequences, considering the very unimaginative imagery of Rose's dream walking and the vortex collapse (other than Barbie's dream) - if they'd had money left in the budget, I'd rather have them improve those. 🙂

I absolutely adore Netflix for doing this, for wanting the author, for keeping close to the story but changing this that honestly feels just as right as the original.... (though I'm fond of Kat Dennings voicing Death in the Audible adaptation.... I do love Kirby) Can't wait for season 2 ... just let us know which books it will incorporate.... that is my only plea, because I will wait till i put the chairs on the table, turn the lights out and lock the door behind me 😉

Perhaps you speak truly. But- you say that dreams have no power here? Tell me Lucifer Morningstar... Ask yourself, all of you, what power would hell have if those here imprisoned were not able to dream of Heaven? One of my favorite scenes

Boba u know I always give things a chance, but I can’t lie man while I absolutely loveeee this show! I wish Tom could play lucifer just one more time, I know we already got him for the Netflix show BUT in season 1 of lucifer there was this kind of tone that felt dark like the exchange he first had with his brother “I look forward to eating your heart” I felt like they missed that kinda tone which is why I fucking loveeeeeeee this show! AND THEY MADE HELL LOOK VERY WELL DONE! I can’t wait to meet the rest of the family in season two. Especially since we know desire will be the big bad, I wish we got more time with them tho

Gwendoline as Lucifer is sooooo much more close in presence and looks (Based on David Bowie) to who Lucifer in Sandman and the standalone series is actually supposed to be.

The John Dee of the series is actually so much scarier, as he is more representative of the unintended consequences of good intentions rather than being simply a psychopath. All the killings that result from the amulet come after he warns the attacker not to shoot him. It's so much deeper and more interesting than the John Dee of the comic. Constantine is spot on. Only a woman could carry a trenchcoat off in 2022 without looking ridiculous - and Coleman has a darkness that a male Constantine might not have been able to pull off in the same way in a modern setting. The only thing I would criticise is that there is no explanation why Unity Kinkaid's father has become so successful in an era of British history where people of colour probably would not have been able to achieve such a lavish lifestyle. I am sure there is a rationale for it (perhaps there were such outliers and only our prejudice makes us think there weren't) - but it's left unclear. Perhaps a reference to the Tulsa incident as retold in the HBO Watchmen sequel - black people were clearly able to achieve affluence - but in England too?

It's probably because Unity Kincaid wasn't black. And that was one of the many, artistic licenses, taken with the characters of the show. They probably put no further thought into it, than that.

I was pretty pleased with it overall, with some caveats. All the actors do a great job - Morpheus is great, Jenna Coleman was fantastic as Johanna Constantine, and the Corinthian was just flawless. And Matthew too, perfect! And I was pleasantly surprised by just how faithful it was to the story overall. I think where it clunked for me the most is in, i guess maybe the art direction? It all felt a bit too realistic. Tom Sturridge's performance as Dream is great, but it would have really sold his otherworldliness if they'd just gone for it with the black eyes and vocal effect - the couple of times they do it in the show it really sold it for me. And more generally the way dreams and the Dreaming are presented... I dunno, it felt a bit like they'd just decided to make it look the part with CGI in post-production, and that isn't enough to sell the surreality of dreams in the way the comic does. I'd also reeeallly love to know how the serial killer convention goes down with non-readers because man, the tonal choices in that episode were pretty strange! Child murderers played in this kind of broad comedic tone, with Stephen Fry huffing and double-taking as he realised what's going down... i dunno, maybe it's just me but that was a bizarre episode lol. But all that said, it's a pretty impressive achievement, and i'm keeping my fingers crossed for season 2. And keeping them extra-crossed that the show lasts long enough to give us Brief Lives, because that book is just about my favourite piece of literature ever. And i wanna see Delirium soooooo bad!

Fantastic review and analysis of the series! Having read the comics, I have to say, I was very happy with the adaptation. Partly, because as it's been said, you need to make changes when moving from a 2D medium to live action, but also because I think to myself, what writer hasn't gone back and looked at an old work and thought...if I was writing this today, I would do some things differently. There were some things, like making the battle in hell be between Lucifer and Dream ( I mean, a battle of near equals pitting two incredibly powerful foes together, to me, worked better, for me, than one of the Endless versus some random demon), which just worked better for me, and gave Lucifer more motivation for his later actions. I also appreciated the change on John Dee. It seemed to give him more real depth and motivation than just 'I'm mad and I want to make the whole world mad too, which is what I always got from Doctor Destiny in the comics). I also liked the addition of the Corinthian as the throughline through the series, as it helped to tie the episodes together, and take away some of the episode feel of being disconnected that happened to me when I was reading the comics. It helped to make every different episode and story feel like more a part of one single story, which I think TV shows generally need, unless they are specifically set up as disconnected anthologies.

I wonder how they will adapt the rest of the series, not just how many seasons will there overall be (4, maybe 5? They don’t need to all be the same length as this one…), but structurally and pacing-wise. Volume 4, “Season of Mists” is the shortest but has some of the most memorable stories (and Will Shakespeare came back much later), AND we’ve had Hob already as part of ‘The Sound of Her Wings’. As for Volume 5, “A Game of You”, it barely features Dream (not that it needed to) and might be set up differently… plus we’re definitely getting a more modern depiction for Wanda no doubt (albeit she WAS a groundbreaking character at the time and Gaiman is rightfully proud of the story he wrote then even if he’s also said he wouldn’t have written it that way NOW). And I’d love more modern Johanna Constantine (because we’re getting her ancestor, and why not if she can be tied into more stories?) Looking much further ahead, the last couple Volumes are definitely going to be something incredible when they get to it… with Matthew having said this season that dreams never die, that MUST get called back to!

I've been marathoning the show... I am up to episode 7 right now and it's nearly 7am where i am from watching it from watching it since late last night... the show has really drawn me in... I had no idea what to expect because I am not familiar with the overall story... and each ep has been so fascinating, different, bold, and well done... I can't wait to finish this but so far, I am pretty impressed

The green screen stuff didn't bother me at all as I was just that deeply immersed in the story and characters. It's not that bad as you said already. When comparing to other things, yeah it's a bit off but not a bother.

Great review and great show. I've seen a couple articles speculate that people who haven't read the source material (me) may find the show boring, but I absolutely loved it. It was like Legion meets Breaking Bad or something, can't wait for season 2.

I only heard of this through your videos. My God I'm so glad I gave it a try. Back half definitely felt like a different story than the front half, but it only intrigued me more. I'm so curious of this world and the many stories to tell. Ep. 6 felt like it's own story itself and I loved it.

Your explanations really helped me have a better understanding of the story and characters. I actually loved this series and the way everything was adapted. It was strange seeing a Constantine that didn’t smoke tho. The only thing that worries me is WB taking over now and the fact that we will probably never get a second season or sequel of any kind. (Would love to be proved wrong) but As a DC fan i know not to get my hopes up. This series was the best show I’ve watched in a long time!

I'm so late for this review but honestly, I wanted to wait and absorbed the show. 1. Never read Sandman and know nothing of the characters and the world BUT this show is remarkable and really touch my soul. 2. All the actors are incredible. So many small touches without being loud and if loud, still so emotional. 3. Even the supporting characters like Hob and the lady driver who was driving around Doc Destiny all so wonderful. The people that Death took and the scenes. Oh so brilliant and wonderfully acted. I can't say enough how wonder this show is and I'm only at episode#6 Wow👏👏👏👏💯💯💯💯🙏🙏

Beautifully shot, costumed and acted! I do think this season felt like two distinct parts though from a plot perspective so I would have preferred that they either split it into two halves or have the two stories integrated better.

The Sandman (series) is something to binge watch a couple times to catch most of the background nuances, like Artin Tenbones on the galleon and Merv Pumpkinhead in the garden, or the little girl running at the park. None of these things detract, but enhance the viewing experience

I agree with a lot of this review and the changes. Who am I to argue with Niel? I do disagree about Patton Oswald as Matthew. To me it was the weakest link. He's not even trying to sound like a raven. To me it sounds like Patton Oswald just phoning in a VA from a shower stall. Otherwise, I really liked the adaptation. Particularly Dream, Corinthian, Fiddler's Green, and Death. Those castings were spot on. Gwen as Lucifer took a second viewing to grow on me. I hated Matthew even more the second time around. The first half of the series S1 is definitely stronger than the second half, but overall after waiting for this adaptation for 25 years, I'm pretty OK with how it turned out, and enjoyed it despite going in heavily sceptical.

I don't think it worked so well with Lucifer facing Dream in the challenge, rather than Choronzon. Dream had already stated that The Morningstar was more powerful than him by far. Dream is also, still, in a weakened state. Plus, we are in Lucifer's place of power. It would have been credible for Morpheus to defeat a mere Duke of Hell, full of boasts and braggadocio, as in the comics. Lucifer, on the other hand (IMO) should have been able to squash him like a bug. Not a major issue for the series overall, and Gwen Christie's performance is superb. But still...

I get what you're saying but I think you could be looking at it from the wrong perspective here. I believe the whole point is that Dream still outwitted Lucifer. Physically yes of course, Lucifer would have beat Dream's ass but this wasn't a duel of power. It was a battle/game of wits. So Lucifer's overconfidence here was the downfall. Lucifer is second to God in power don't get me wrong but isn't necessarily perfect in every other way and didn't expect this outcome hence the humiliation. It doesn't make Lucifer any less powerful but this outcome doesn't automatically mean that due to Lucifer's incredible power, that they're immune to losing a battle of wits :)

I've finished watching the remaining 4 episodes and I have to say... unfortunately, I didn't enjoy these last few eps and how it ended. I was left confused, and felt like a lot of that was kinda pointless, and the setup for what I assume is a season 2 felt like it came out of nowhere... the first half of the season was amazing... but far too much went on outside of the purvue of the Endless and Dream... and focuses too much on the Humans of Rose Walker and her being a Vortex, but is actually Unity... and Corinthian being a great killer but was still just dusted... or should I say sanded... the actual big bads are the Endless siblings like Desire and Despair and now Lucifer with Azazel... it sounds epic but why weren't we getting that than a lot of these separate stories that seemed not really that connected to one another. I get we're learning about this world and its lore but... I felt that last half could have been so much better, and shorter... I really stopped caring about what was happening with Lyta and how Rose became a macguffin character.... still a good show overall but that writing needed to be tighter at the end.

When this video was made like all other reviewers there wasn't an episode 11. They released 10 episodes on launch, not 11 when these reviews were made. Episode 10 was the finale to the series arc and episode 11 is a bonus episode.

The story of Lucifer quitting is one of my favorite arcs, but I never quite understood how he/she could just quit and leave -- Lucifer was an angel cast down by God... wouldn't God keep Lucifer in Hell...? I hope they recreate all the various Gods petitioning Dream for the key to that "valuable piece of real estate." There's a heavy-duty, "Annotated Sandman." I've read and recommend, "The Sandman Companion," by Hy Bender.

Well Lucifer represents will , free will and individuality . He is the Will of the Presence/God . Presence won't do anything bc of that free will and bc thenically you could say is all part of his Plan . Lucifer wants to break free of his Father plan .

hmmm....I seem to be in the minority here, but the series overall was a failure for me. Maybe I'm too attached to the comic, but every change from the source material bugged me to no end. And the acting was a mixed bag as well; Every scene with Cain and Abel made me cringe, Johanna Constantine wasn't shabby enough (if that makes sense, John Constantine always seemed a bit worse for wear, run down and despondant), Lucien was an insufferably smug knowitall; he was much more respectful towards Dream in the comic, The Corinthian was used too much, it took away some of his mystique, made him less scary, Lucifer was too mild, too timid, and he certainly shouldn't have fought Dream instead of the demon....I could go on, but for me, I would have been happy if they just put the comic on screen. Episode 5 and 6 were worth watching though...

there will always be a part of me that wishes Death in the show was a 90s punk rock-goth chick but that said Howell-Baptiste is great and Death and Dream have fantastic chemistry

The only thing I would have insisted is that Death was still a woman and I agree the actress done great. I think the only problem with the series is because they got Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer they changed it so that she was the one that fights Morpheus means that as Morpheus wins it weakens Lucifer. Also Constantine is supposed to be from Liverpool NOT London.

While Kirby doesn't actually "look" like Death (in her skin color), she definitely plays her quite well. Once she is on screen, and opens her mouth, you forget that her skin is supposed to be super bone white pale.

Love the show. Overall I felt it was casted very well. I disagree on the casting for Lucifer. I thought the actress they chose as wel as her costume were ridiculous and ill fitting for a character like Lucifer. It might work in an outright comedy/satire but not for this kind of show. Gotta disagree with ya and the people who casted the show on that one. She wasn’t scary at all, she didn’t communicate in any way the brilliance or the fear of such an epic figure / character like lucifer . U gotta think BRIGHT . Gorgeous . Terrifying. That actress and her performance are none of those things.

He looks so much and sounds like him lol. Heard someone say he looks like Robert Pattinson from twilight lol. Never noticed that he just looks like dream to me lol. Looks little better than comics lot less pale and his hair way more crazier in the comics. Looks more like a couple of my michael Myers pushes lol. Before I knew it I was in chapter four. I was like dang then after that I'm so sad cause its beginning of the end lol. Slow countdown to the last chapter lol. Perfect death lol. I can see where Eric kripke based reaper Tessa of from supernatural. He loved these comics. Very similar characters lol. Yeah cool Lucifer lol. Awesome sets lol. I couldn't wait til he took those glasses off lol. Knew they'll wait til the end to do this lol. Yayyyyy Constantine lol. Love that one lol.
