After 1864 we licked the wounds and imagined to ourselves that modesty and a pure nationality was beautiful, we have since and until today, had this trauma!👍👍👍Well done feature.

@@Emanon... Yes, most Danes know this as well. But still, the country is still very homogeneous and strives for consensus. A Danish people's character is largely unquestioned, allowing for a proud we-them-dichotomy.

There was some hope that Russia, Britian, and Sweden would join the danish side. Edward VII in Britian and Tsarevich Nichola in Russia both had highly loved danish consorts in 1864, and a new Scandinavian romanticism hoped for Sweden to help defend Denmark. In the end there was no help, and Denmark stood no chance against the combined power of Prussia and Austria.

There is a statue to the struggle for Sleswig-Holstein In Copenhagen. It’s a Danish soldier going forward with a small drummer boy on his shoulder. Interesting to have the history of the statue now.

Great work on an extremely complicated conflict. A bit too much pathos, but that's a question of individual taste. A little irritating, however, is the use of a modern map of the region, showing roads and furthermore bridges (for example Storebælt, Lillebælt) that did not exist then

Sadly my great great grandfather was one of those Danish soldiers who died as a result of the Battle of Als. His company was entrenched where the Prussian soldiers landed.

I am Danish and we are told it is called Dannevirke so I would like to know where you get Dannevirki from because it confuses me a lot but I am sure you did your rescearch and I am just remembering it all wrong. Like I think the Vikings started its construction and the language was different back then something like that. You pronounce it more or less right and it says Danavirke on the map you show as well.

modern Danish spelling: Dannevirke; in Old Norse; Danavirki, in German; Danewerk. In English: Danevirke. Do not think Old Norse spelling is correct for modern usage

21:30 I know this is a sad comparison, but it feels kinda funny when you read stuff about WW I (~50 years later) like "and over 2k men died in the first half hour assaulting entrenched positions supported by MGs" or about the casulty figures of Waterloo (~50 years earlier) with prussian involvement, even tho Wellingtons Finest did the main lifting on that day and in this vid we talk about a hundred dudes. Every life lost in war is one too many, for that matter, but it does sound weird.

From what I've seen here in this video, that period in Prussian history was basically one person after another saying "Ok folks, I'm in charge now", and someone else saying "HELL NO!"

We were heavily outnumbered, and the Prussians had more modern rifles (breech loading vs muzzle loading). Other than that, they had more effective artillery. So the short answer would most likely be no.

This was not in fact a case of German aggression but of Danish aggresion the Danes I believe had controlled this area since 1648 officially peace ending officially the 30 years war, but controlling part of the Reich was one thing, incorporating them into Denmark was quite another as this would effectively remove them from the Reich. that is why both Austria and Prussia acted to defend the integrety of the Reich. Since other parts of the Reich had been lost in the thirty years war Danish control of 2 of the states of the Reich but them remaing part of the Reich nad been acceptable their seizure was not. Whether the Danish king realised that is open to question.kings often miss the distinction between what we own and what we control but do not own.

Well Holsten was a part of the Northern German Confederation and was just a fief of the Danish king. Slesvig on the other side was a danish duchy and belonged more or less from 980 a.C until 1864 to Denmark. And then greedy Prussians stole it...

while I enjoy your videos - you are skipping so many details why the war with Denmark started, it borders on pro-danish nationalist propaganda. There were SEVERAL treaties. And Denmark broke them all. Knowing that it would lead to war but doing it anyway. It was not the german nationalists who caused this mess. It was the danes who pushed for it.

seriously, try reading a actual book on the war instead of trusting the fantasy 1864 Tvseries. The German (or more precis Holstein) Nationalists started the whole mess in 1848 by rebellion. And between the wars they where never interested in finding a political solution. What was needed was a division of the Danish whole-state by getting rid of Holstein, and that was exactly what the Danish government did in late 1863... Integrated Sleswig and threw Holstein out. And this was done under pressure from Sweden and with promises of military aid from Sweden. (and with a plan supported by members of the Danish cabinet of putting the Swedish king on the Danish throne.)

Okay first of all, this region was / is ancient danish territory for centuries (from 980 ac to 1864). Trying to get our rightful land back is not a crime! And secondly, don't pretend Germany never broke treaties

@@danishcommander4dk you break treaties, you bear the consequences. Schlesweg-Holstein must not be divided. Since 1460. Schleswig was also not under the rule of the danish king, but was ruled over as duke. Either way. When the danes decided to make Schleswig part of Denmark proper, they broke all the treaties. And they knew it. Sadly, it is not the idiotic politicians who have to fight in the wars they start.

@@methanbreather But the question is: who cares about the past? 1864 is not 2024! So even if the people there were so excited to belong to Prussia back then, doesn't mean that the people of (Southern) Slesvig, the "sydslesviger" want to be a part of Germany today. I know a few people there who often complain about how bad Germany is and that this region rather should be danish again. And nobody can blame them. In comparison to other german states, the Slesvig region has one of the lowest GDP's, a high unemployment, rural exodus etc. But I guess time will tell...

Where ARE You ??? This was a wonderful example of your work, but since you don't appear anymore, I am hoping all is well with you ! When you show yourself. I suspect you have a greater chance at getting folks interested in history that otherwise may not. A human face makes a difference. You show a youthful face that is truly interested in history. I really think your personality is a great asset at marketing your channel. I am not in that field (Marketing). As a Psychiatrist I see you as a strong asset to a business venture.

The absence off support to Denmark from France & United Kingdom & Sweden & Russian Impire in preventing a unification of "Greater Germany" by starting attack on Denmark - later in time ended with WW1 & WW2, - these major European Powers, by there "non interference" Created the foundation for later much worse wars on them self - Denmark had to "buy peace by given land" - later European major powers did that again with Czeckoslovakia in 1939 - - - will we see this again in Ukraine in year 2024 ? ? ? ?.

Maybe stop stealing land from Germany all the time, France stole Alsaxe, Denmark wanted all north of Elbe, Poland always wanted land, Austria did Shenanigans in 1866...Sudetebland 1938 was ethnically German should never have been in Czechislovakia, etc.

Horrible take. This takes place 70 years before the Nazis seized power. Not to mention great cultural differences between Austria and Germany. At this stage, Germany didn't even exist and Austria was a multi-ethnic empire including Czechia, Slovakia, parts of Ukraine and Hungary.
