Stacey Lee, director of ‘The Secrets of Hillsong’ joins Variety’s Doc Dreams presented by National Geographic to discuss why her documentary did not need former pastor, Carl Lentz, to tell this story, what his experience was during their first on-camera interview, and why it was important to balance of all other perspectives in the church as well.

I appreciate Stacey's comment at the end where she said "this story transcends the church. Look to Hollywood, etc." That this is not just a problem that is in the church, but is in our culture at large. This story just happens to take place in a church, but this documentary is not trying to be a take-down of the church. As a Christian, I appreciate that approach to documenting this story. In general as a culture we need to stop elevating flawed people to a position of celebrity, no matter what organization they are part of.

But you are also negating the fact that churches are one of the most dangerous places for young people. They've been covering up the biggest cases of abuse in history for decades. They took known pedos and moved them to new groups of kids when they got caught. The Catholic Church was exposed the last decade and this one will be the evangelical. You can't deny facts.

This documentary was very well done. Much better than the other one that came out. Carl seems to have changed though time will tell of course. I still think he was ousted the way he was because they were afraid he would start his own church. I mean nobody was as big as he was a few years back. He was everywhere! I wish him well. As a churchgoer at a huge mega church in Charlotte, NC this documentary sheds light on what makes these churches tick.

On the contrary, Carl showed Zero compassion for his victims. He turned himself into a victim through this documentary. He showed no remorse. He used passive language such as " I allowed an inappropriate relationship to develop" instead of "I cultivated an inappropriate relationship." he made it sound like the things he did were done TO him. 👀. Instead of saying he deserved to be removed, he pointed out how others who had done as he had done _weren't_ removed. He minimized his predation on the nanny, making it seem mutual and informed, yet he was busy drugging her and touching her whenever was only partially conscious and unable to fend him off. This is an obvious redemption tour for Carl's public comeback. He even showed them his "humble new job as a low level advertising employee, only to announce his return to megachurch ministry as the documentary was released. I have yet to see any change in Carl. This struck me as his worldwide privacy tour. Lol.

I was in Hillsong Church in the North West of Sydney before Carl Lentz even came on the scene. The Worship leader, Darlene Zschech, is the one who made Hillsong Church Internationally big. Churches began to do Praise and Worship in a similar style to Darlene and her team of Worship Singers and Writers. Hardly anyone in Australia was talking about Carl. It is only the Americans and the American documentaries that have made Carl larger than life. Carl was never the main star. He rarely ever preached in Australia. We rarely even talked about Him. We rarely gave him a thought. All these Documentaries trying to make out that Carl was the one who really made Hillsong big is just plain false !!

Hillsong burst into the international scene more due to Carl's friendship with Justin Bieber. HS was very well known internationally by Christians (not unbelievers) due to their music, but I would say they became internationally known as a church due to American reports about Carl being buddies with Justin. My two cents. 🙂

It takes a whole team of people to make any church what it is, it's never just one person. Everyone has to take accountability for their own actions (eg you choose to do something wrong) and yes the church should check in to see how others are doing too. Like any organisation or workplace you are going to get a mix of people, never forget there are still really nice and genuine people out there in the world, including in Hillsong, it would be naive to say there isn't. To be honest when we think of a church it shouldn't be because of any single person, we should be seeing it as the church of God period, it belongs to him and him alone and within the church of God are his people. Christianity is not a religion, it's a relationship. Also we all make mistakes whether big or small and somehow we have to reconcile with that to ourselves and others, we have to heal and move on. I think we have to remember that when people preach it's not about them, so no matter what a person has done we can still find truth in what they have said because it was never about them in the first place, people come and go but the word of God remains.

Interviewer: "...what's your greatest hope for the docu-series and its impact is?" Stacey: "I hope it creates a transparency and openness with which to talk about the religious systems in the global community.... it's not a take-down of religion...it's an ability to understand the good that's done but also the lines that are crossed that are bad and how to look out for those because we live in a culture where celebrity worship and personality worship is in every stage not just religion." This was her agenda. She may not have had an "axe to grind" (your words) if there was no malfeasance. But let's be honest. Documentaries' center on investigative insight into some injustice. Excellent! I want to see this documentary. As one who used to be very active in the Evangelical world I know she is right... the church is no different than a corporation with sleazy politics and power plays... cruelty and abuse by the "corporate" officers who call themselves pastors... but...because they say they are God's people, they are more powerful and their victims are far more devastated by the disallusionment they experience when they realize they have been used and abused.

It's always easy to point out mistakes people have made. I'm not defending or justifying him at all. I simply believe that we often are quick to judge as if we're perfect and we've never made mistakes. If people really knew all our hidden sins, they'd be turned away. I think this documentary is subjective with only 60 sources compared to a large church congregation. the church is not a collection of saints, all churches have dark stories because they were built by a group of people, it cannot necessarily that church people will be fine with their lives because we still live in a world where sin cannot be avoided. but what can build a church is because of faith and forgiveness. God has loved us long before we knew him, because we live in grace. I hope all those who are hurt are able to find their way with God and find peace in forgiveness.

It seemed as if to me that Carl really stepped out of the “Church Carl Lentz” and stepped out into the real Carl Lentz of just who he is. I personally believed that he came across as more humanized than previously. I also really appreciated Laura’s story and the negative impact it had on her and her relationship with God. The saddest part about this whole documentary is that the people were so focused on Carl and the church - so focused on a MAN, instead of being focused on Jesus and His word. They looked to be appeased by a man instead of seeking out what Christ wanted for them. They joined this church without asking God if that's where they should be. They focused on what these "white men" believed instead of what God has already said and established. God is God and the Bible is the Bible regardless of what a church/pastor says or believes. The one lady who said "Christianity is always behind" - man, what a sad statement. These people aren't looking for truth in Jesus, they are looking for a "church" that will affirm how they want to live with a little bit of Jesus on the side.

It is quite possible that God is "allowing" these things to happen in the church in order to draw out His true people. I say this, because true Christians-- those who are really His -- will have their eyes and ears opened to the truth (because God gives them a love for His truth) and will separate themself from these false teachers. God can, and does, use everything for His own purpose and glory -- even the sins of others serve His purposes. There are those who are merely appalled at the sins of others, and there are those who heed it as a warning...and there's a big difference between these two!!

I experienced firsthand the "celebrity pastor" along with "cult-like" stigma and afterwards I was VERY turned off by Christian churches ESPECIALLY nowadays. It's ALWAYS a "Christian rally" and people there were more into taking photos "for the 'Gram" while making it into a "fashion show." It's like "high school" because it's so "clickish" and was NOT welcoming to the less fortunate.

I just saw this documentary last night and as a Believer, I was sad, triggered, shocked, and not shocked! I prayed and thanked G-d that my relationship with Him is not dependent on man. These leaders were motivated by pride, power, greed, and lust! I know wonder if Brian Houston’s son’s Frank and Joel are repeating the sins of their father and grandfather father. It is dangerous when someone convinces themselves that the truth is a lie and the lie is the truth! Carl was absolutely in the wrong which he admitted and I feel for his wife, children, and family because they were a causality of his actions. I do believe that the women he had affairs with were consensual in having sex with him and it was disgusting to see them act like they were victims (it is hard to heal when their is no ownership or accountability). I am glad he took ownership and that he appears to be living a life of recovery and redemption. I am praying for him, his family, his former staff and members of the church. I hope they all heal! With that said, it was clear that he was treated like a scapegoat and the leadership at Hillsong handled this and so many situations wrong and what appears to be in many cases illegally. The Houston’s acting like the victims was very arrogant and hypocritical at minimum. I hate when people blame the devil or their “enemies” but they don’t take ownership for their actions (both in private and in public). It would be one thing if people made up lies against them, it is another thing when one lies and tries to conceal the truth. I have have seen and experienced things in Church that I could have easily changed places with people sharing their experiences on this doc. When you are in the midst of seeking help or blowing the whistle your are often mistreated, gaslit, and rejected. Although my faith in G-d is very strong I haven’t been a member of or attended church in years and I don’t see that changing in the future. I don’t watch “Christian” TV, ministers, and it is hard to listen to the music and watch films that I know are made by people that social stances are detrimental to lives of countless others. Specifically, seeing how theses individuals and institutions handle children abuse and sexual assault was sickening while abusers and their enablers continued obtaining power and popularity because of their privilege! Sadly, so much of the abuse has and continues to happen in ministries, churches, and denominations worldwide because people haven’t changed nor have they been held accountable!

I don’t think he was a huge superstar, he was just a weird hotdog that was a product of purity culture that got married to young woman that was encouraged by hillsong so he could become a pastor at a young age. He was too young to be put in that position and he couldn’t handle it! I don’t feel sorry for Carl lenz. I feel bad for the women and boys that were victimized by folks at hillsong!

GOD gave the holy commandments, to the hebrew nation and through the holy prophet Moses! ...the new testament saids Jesus studied the torah and tanakh amongst the Jewish leaders! ...Jesus was Jewish! So those who want others to take them serious, then why not learn judiasm as Jesus studied?

These pastors and evangelists are the very same evil that they preach about. They know that heaven or God you believe in can’t do anything against them. They use ignorance and fear in God to abuse their power over you. Your need to be saved and validated by someone you think has authority over you what makes you vulnerable to these predators.

Not sure why that place is even called a church, I would best say they are motivational gatherings. Feel good music, feel good sermons, there's no Christ in this. Everyone's to busy with their titles and who made what.

Why did the nanny spend so much time with the Lentz family when she had her own husband and child in Boston. Her husband was a Hillsong pastor in Boston. What kind is unhealthy relationship was this and why was it allowed?
@rachelhovenden3669
@rachelhovenden3669 10 місяців тому
If pastors have multiple campuses they often need a nanny to look after the children as their wife would be in a campus speaking and the husband would be in the other. Or they would be travelling. Sometimes the Nanny is mixed with Responsibilities as a PA.

@@rachelhovenden3669 but their nanny has her own children to care for and had a nanny to care for them while she cared for the Lentz family. Also the nanny’s husband was also a pastor for Hillsong. Just seems like an unhealthy situation.

@@kyleyoakum9383 I wondered this too. At first i was upset with the nanny, like why didnt u go home for christmas, obvious u liked carl. But then... If u watch closely, there was like u said this power dynamic. Both Laura and Carl said: we were her pastors, we were her leaders. You could say Carl was a 'greater' pastor because even though the nannys husband was a pastor too, Carl was their pastor. Meaning, it was her job? In a statement she said, when pointing out that she wanted to leave, that Carl said: what kind of job you think youre gonna get outside of church? Laura also admitting she was being harsh on her (afterwards), leaving her in the house, and also mind u, hit HER so hard she almost broke her finger. Meaning the nanny had 2 leaders bossin around. Like u see with the wives: they are supporting their husbands. And apparantely there is ranking. So even though nanny was important herself as a pastor, not important enough and also Laura is a part of this dynamic (maybe in the beginning being oblivious for this). She assumed this is her role and duty as a nanny. Even though saying 'u can go home for christmas'. Also nanny feeling it as her duty that carls and lauras kids are more important because all did it for the bigger pictuere. What ya think? :D

@@kyleyoakum9383 watching the documentary made me think of Scientology but in a more proper, fancy way. Like with Scientology, the closer u get to Brian Houston, the more u learn what he rlly stands for. (Like so in Scientology the more u are in the system u come to learn that they actually belief in UFOs, aliens and stuff, but not if ur new). So to the public ‘all are welcome’ but for years no one knew their stance on lgtbq, except when you’re there for years or by some kind of situation. Being shunned, belittled. It’s really interesting. Hillsong seemed like the solutions to a lot of problems we see in churches: the picky rules: now u stand now u sit, don’t say this, don’t wear that, etc. It turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A very conservative theology where fellow Christian’s allow leadership to misbehave and not condone it, but praise it. Yelling they are ppl of God. I watched another documentary part and u know what Brian says? He says that he is annointed by God and that annointed people are a protected species. God protects and his specie. Seems an awful lot like he is seeing himself like just a little / or just a like Jesus. Isn’t this what the Bible warns us for? So yes, cultic system very much so. And look how many people in 1 blink of an eye will never turn to faith again. I’d say: this seems a lot like the wolf in sheep’s clothes, the devil at work.

Hillsong boomed because of the music, and the leadership of Darlene Zschech to the music team. They made a positive impact to the churches. She left Hillsong along with her husband around 2006 or 2007 to lead a new small church. I think there was something that happened around that time on Hillsong the reason she left that church. Carl Lentz was just a speaker on every conference they had, never knew he's a pastor or something.

Keep in mind that was another famous preacher who was very charismatic and said controversial things and grew a very large following in a matter of a few years… he was so controversial that they crucified him. Of course I’m speaking of Jesus. By no means at I saying Carl like Jesus in terms of righteousness or holiness or whatever I’m Just saying here we are 2000 years later and still judge people simply because of charisma and fame… and of course we shouldn’t do that.
