Reminds me of the way you can attach eGPUs to old business laptops(like the Dell Latitude e6420) via a smartcard or directly connecting the eGPU dock(exp gdc beast) to the wifi card slot. That trend should come back!

Thanks @Jarrod for bringing the review of the mobile dock to us before anyone else, and that too is a superb one. It's really surprising to see what AMD Processors are bringing into the table, which was unheard of before. Regarding Thunderbolt 3 eGPU, the actual bandwidth to the GPU is actually even lower, 32Gpps, not 40. 8Gpps is reserved for the Displayport alt mode, which comes from the Type-C display output. So, definitely this custom connection is helping a lot. Only other similar connection is Alienware Graphics Amplifier port which offers 8 lane PCIe 3.0 connection. Hope Alienware releases Ryzen 5000H based gaming laptop with their Graphics Amplifier where we can add a true desktop class GPU.

Even with the eGPU, the xFlow still weighs far less than the power brick+laptop combos of various thin and lights such as Max-15 (5.9 pounds), Zephyrus G15 (6 pounds). It only competes with Zephyrus G14+cables (4.9 pounds), but that has a weaker gpu.

I would love to see the comparison between this combo and a 3080 Zephyrus G15, both using an external monitor. I would love to see how much gains I get when the main GPU is offloaded for more portability. This would be a good comparison as I think this combo will weight same as a G15.

This is SERIOUSLY compelling. I could see having that external part set up at the desk with a nice monitor, keyboard and mouse. Though, the Zephyrus Duo is a sexy beast too, and I think they are similarly priced... could be wrong tho.

Awesome video with so much info. Just waiting for the difference between the new connection with a mobile 3080 compared to a TB3 desktop 3080. I'd say the desktop beats it but not by too much and it would be cheaper if we are talking MSRP but since you are buying a 13 inch already, portability is probably the goal so buying the XG mobile is probably the way to go.

The G13 eGPU is an interesting avenue for future upgradability, would be the perfect platform for an MXM module.

I really hope they make a version of this for desktop GPU's using this same cable solution, since theoretically it should be capable of performing very close to a desktop. Having a single laptop for everything has been a dream of mine since my first alienware graphics amplifier.

I'm excited by this in concept, I still think it's about a generation or 2 from being really usable. I'd prefer a desktop class EGPU just with this cable and for the laptop to not need a discrete GPU to get that level of performance when not docked (so 1080p gaming on the go, 4k at home connected to a monitor). I used a 13.3 in a plane and it's wasn't terrible.

Glad I got the strix scar with the 3070 as I was debating this. Perromance is similar and I save nearly £1000. Plus the mechanical keyboard on scar laptops is great to use.

For me it's going to be connected to an external monitor for the majority of the time, the 13" screen will probs be only used for media like Netflix or casual web browsing when I'm away from home.

I'd like to see a comparison between the X13 (with XG Mobile 3080, 150W) , the ROG Strix Scar G15 (3080 , 115W ), and the Zephyrus G15 (3080 , 80W) . All seem to be very compelling portable options with similar premium price points at different TDP ratings.

Latency is extremely more important than bandwidth. TB3 or USB protocols affects frame pacing, while that connector can exploit pci-ex interface just like an internal graphic card. Can Blender and Vray use Optix render via eGPU?

It uses PCIe for the GPU connection. The USB is for the other dock functions.

The Duo got a very interesting gimmick and would still be useful even after a new generation is out, not all laptops are dual screens so always that extra.

@@niko1even Definitely but I think the supernova edition allows you to increase the wattage of the CPU, also the x13 flow in tent mode has superior cooling. I think they mentioned something like 3 or 4 degrees C difference between tent mode and non-tent mode

I have yet to see anything other than the RTX 3080 variant. At least here in the US. LOVING my z13 though, even without the XG Mobile (I spec'd the 3050ti variant with the FHD 120Hz screen, which works swimmingly).

The 4k version comes with the Ryzen 9 5890HS, 32 GB RAM, so I assume you'd even get better results with that edition of the Flow X13.

My usecase for this is just coming home from work or whatever and then playing games in my free time. I usually don't need a GPU. And only need it at home. Specially for VR I don't care at all about the gtx 1660 that's Included either tbh. Sometimes useful but not worth the batterlife lost and the disadvantages. To me it seems like just getting a zepherous is just a smarter Option with this config and price. It has the same if not better battery life.

Hi Jarrod, i'm a little desapoint about i/o of the Asus line up, they should have a standar like at least 1 usb 20gbps, 1usb 10gbs, 1 usb "C" with dp and power, SD card reader top one, camera at high, rj45, audiojack combo. They dont have a excuse of that.... And the screens are brutal at 1440p 165hz, more is to much consumption. The internals are very good.
