Jeez. That was a while before I got into Pikes. I was a big awd turbo GMC Syclone & Typhoon fan, made in 91 & 92, and a guy named Shaun Palmer used to race one on Pikes Peak in the early 2000s. It was such an incredible truck. There's vids of it on here. The already came with cladding aka "a ground fx kit" and he made a custom wide body kit for his to extended the track width and run bigger wheels & tires. Man that truck was something! You can. Look up Pikes Peak Syclone and a couple of vids come up. One from the mountain in 2003 and one from later on when another SyTy enthusiast did a piece on it. That guy ended up making the same wide body kit for his Time Attack/hillclimb Syclone. That, guy is Adam Auerbach, owner of High Performance Trucks/HPT.

Not really crazy at all if you think about it. Michèle came out of nowhere and when you're a male driver that is used to their colleagues being other male drivers it came as a shock to them. Especially when they started getting their ass beat by her. It's easy to see why a lot of men let their pride and ego get the better of them. It's by no means an excuse, but I would say it's unfortunately to be expected that they underestimated her time and time again. (plus the Quatro had it's fair share of haters)

Great video, the s**t the organisers gave Michèle Mouton was frustrating but unsurprising, and I'm glad she smashed the record despite the setbacks and blatant sexism she faced. I legit cheered when you said Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima broke the 10 minute barrier, to do so despite mechanical failure and his age after years of trying is such an inspiring story, especially given the heartache Japan suffered just prior. I do think there should be separate categories for the record based on the road surface btw, so for pure gravel it goes to Millen, and then mixed gravel and tarmac gets it's own record and so on rather than treating all variants the same.

There's a part of the history of the Pikes Peak race that few know about, and that's the original mountain race that was famous before Pikes Peak that once it shut down everyone started going out to Pikes Peak to race. Starting in circa 1912 in Pennsylvania Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures, and George Titlow, a friend of his and the owner of a posh Hotel in Uniontown Pennsylvania, which is at the base of the western face of the Appalachian Mountains, started the Summit Mountain race, like Pikes Peak it was a race from the bottom of the mountain to it's summit, which is named Summit Mountain. A little background first, at the time Uniontown Pennsylvania was home to more registered millionaire's per capita than anywhere else in the country thanks to the booming coal industry creating what was known in those days as Coal Barons, in 1892 George Titlow built the Titlow Hotel which at the time was the most luxurious hotel in the tri state area, Carl Laemmle used to stay there and befriended Titlow, the two of them were automobile enthusiasts and organized the Summit Mountain race, what made it famous was Carl Laemmle having film crews from his movie company film the race and show it around the world in movie theaters in between the early silent movies, by the 2nd year people were coming from all over the world including royalty from Europe to watch it it'd become so famous. However, in a fit of what can only be described as stupidity, after 3 or 4 year's the county father's worrying about the possibilities of someone being hurt or killed outlawed the race, the next year everyone started going out west to Pikes Peak to race. The story gets even better, after having their Summit Mountain race banned Laemmle and Titlow built a boardtrack at the bottom of the mountain that like the Summit Mountain race got to be famous from Laemmle showing clips from it in theaters, and like the Summit Mountain race the championship races at the Uniontown Speedway boardtrack attracted royalty from Europe and the richest people in America, however, after a bad accident where a car got away from a racer and down into the pits killing some mechanics the country father's outlawed the race and had the track taken down, afterwards everyone started going out to Indianapolis to watch the races at the new track built out there. You can see pictures of the boardtrack and read about it on it's Wikipedia page by Googling Uniontown Speedway including seeing the championship results from when it was open with the first one won by no other than Louis Chevrolet himself, Duesenberg's were the dominate champion cars the year's it was open.

This is a race that must be seen in person. Its wild to see a car speed by at 120 mph on a narrow road and whip around a curve up the hill. So rad

Also, fun fact: the Pikes Peak Hillclimb was actually on the IndyCar schedule in the 1950s and 60s (though its points-paying status varied). It was an unusual time in IndyCar history; from 1950 to 1960, the Indy 500 paid out F1 points.

So glad I got to see this beautiful mountain track when it was all still dirt. 2001 my family took a roadtrip from NC to Colorado and back (I was 10 years old and a HUGE Gran Turismo fan). We rode a trolly to the top and they was qualifying that day. I already noticed how much colder it was and how hard it was to breath up top. But then I hear the most magical turbo sounds ever and see Monster and the red Suzuki Escudo come around the corner and stop. They were happy to let my dad and I get a picture besode the car. Still one of my favorite childhood memories ever.

I was at Glen Cove for one of the races in 95-96 and watched the Celica come around the bend below us with the rear tire kissing the edge of the drop off from the road. Wildest thing I ever got to see I was maybe 13-14 at the time.

Ahhh, pikes peak. One of the last forms of real racing out there today, no real regulations, only "if it passes safety, you can run it" and a absolute dream of mine to race it one day.

I can't quite explain it, but every time I watch your videos I just sit here smiling through them. Re-ignitng the childhood love affairs I had with the Gumball Rally and now Pikes Peak. Your narration is brilliant, and I just the footage of all these awesome cars tackling the hill. Great video.
