I work with cancer patients and let me tell you, it takes whole lot of effort mentally and physically for terminal phase stomach cancer patients just to get up in the morning. Raoul would deserve posthumous oscar for that fact alone.

My mom and I saw this opening day in 1994. I remember she turned to me in the almost empty theater in the middle of the film and said, "Is it OK if I root for the bad guy in this one?" And I'm like, "Heck yes it is."

Ah, Raul Julia. What an awesome guy. He took the role for his children, as they loved Street Fighter. And he did it while battling stomach cancer. Now, as far as cancers go a cancer of the stomach doesn't sound like it would be one of the worst, but it actually is. As far as sheer pain is concerned, a wound or cancer in or around the stomach is the most agonizing as it's not something that will produce a quick death. It's not as immediately incapacitating as the heart or lungs or liver...but God, does it hurt. With other, more immediately fatal forms of cancer, one might say the victim dies mercifully quickly (comparably). But with stomach cancer...it takes more time to pass away. This movie was produced in 1994. Before it, in early 1994, Julia was diagnosed with the cancer. Before 1994 would end, he would be dead. Between that, he worked this movie. Simply amazing, considering the pain he must have been in. And more touching still - he did this movie not for money, but for his children. And when he completed his role here, he died. A handful of weeks following his last line as M. Bison, he would be dead. He was at the threshold of death's door throughout this performance. Such an amazing actor and man and father.

The "For me...it was Tuesday" line, and Raul Julia's delivery of it, single-handedly made me add 50% to my rating of this movie.

To this day I still quote Bison when he says, "it was the most traumatizing moment of your life, but to me it was a Tuesday".

Raul Julia as M. Bison was the best thing about this movie. While dealing with Stomach cancer, he went out and gave 110% in his performance because his kids were fans of the game. As big of a fan that i am of Van Damme, its no secret that he slept walked through his performance while being paid higher than anyone in the cast. Julia always maintained that professionalism even while he was dying, and i have that much more respect for him for doing it.

Saw this when I was 12, knew it was bad.. But this very movie gave me the quote that I'm forever haunted with & inspired to work upon: "If good men do nothing, that is evil enough" - Dr. Dhalsim Rest in Peace Mr. Raul Julia, your work as Bison did inspired some of us here

Raul Julia was dying when he filmed this movie. But if you watch the movie, it doesn't even look like he was sick, he still gave an incredible performance. RIP.

Raul Julia single handedly saved this movie, at least for me. Whenever I hear "Street Fighter", I remember his performance. "You come here to fight a madman, and instead you found a GOD!"

Whether you love, hate or are indifferent to the Street Fighter live action movie. One thing connects us all....Our appreciation and love for the job Raul Julia did playing M.Bison. He made the role his own and to think he was actually dying when portraying him just goes to show how damn good this guy was. One of the most underrated actors of our generation

I remember 1995 as a 12 year old kid being so devastated upon hearing news of Raul Julia’s passing, amazing personality and such charisma. M Bison as his last role ? Actually righteous.

It’s as if Raul Julia wasn’t acting. He enveloped who Bison is. I truly believe he should have gotten an Oscar for that performance. My humble opinion.

I very distinctly remember seeing this in the theater and freaking out with my friend when Julia said "anyone who opposes me will be destroyed" like in the game. DAMN I MISS THE 90'S.

The real beauty of Street Fighter is the fact that it embraces its campness and rather than shying away from it just turns it up to 11 the whole way through the movie! The writers embraced the sheer absurdity of the game when drafting the script and the actors went all in on hamming up their performances. However I fully agree that Raul Julia is the true jewel in the crown of this camp masterpiece. His performance was outstanding! (Even topping Frank Langela's stellar interpretation of Skeletor in Masters of The Universe!) As a 13 year old when I saw this for the first time in 1994 I was blown away by how good he was and now (considerably older!) I can appreciate his performance even more so. AND....to top it all off learning that he did this movie as a final gift to his children.....the man was a legend!

RIP Raul Julia. Despite the fact you were very ill, you played Bison like a Boss. One of the best performances I've ever seen.

Really good point about Raul at the end. Sometimes people forget that this was a passion project despite how it turned out. I blame the studios for rushing it more than anything.

Interestingly, there are 2 books called "The metaphysics of war" and the "Secret of the Grail", which are about what it means to have a "warrior spirit" and what unites traditions like Kung Fu, Knighthood, Martial Arts, Samurais and so on. Interestingly, what Raul Julia did to make this movie, despite his cancer and pain. That he basically risked absolutely everything to complete the project. According to nearly all cultures of the world, this is the essence of the true warrior spirit. And this is why some militaries have slogans like "per aspera ad astra", which mean "reach the stars by willingness to endure hardship and suffering."

In my opinion this movie is amazing it had no flaws.

Just goes to show how awesome and professional Raul Julia was. He only took the role because it would makes his children happy and even though it was totally not the type of movie he would normally do he still poured out his heart and soul into the performance and for me that made that movie great.

Raul was such a great actor! He is sorely missed. I think it's also why he put so much of himself in this movie. He knew it was possibly his last movie and wanted to pour all that he had left into this movie. You can tell in his acting and just how seriously he took the role but at the same time had fun doing it.

I remember watching this as a kid. I didn't know it was even considered as a "bad" movie. All I cared about was that there was JCVD and it was about Street Fighter. For what it's worth, the best scene for me was when Zangief said, "Quick! Change the channel!" Gets me even till today. Great video by the way, especially when you mentioned that it was for his kids.

"PARENTAL LOVE" It's the thing that saved this movie. Without it, Julia would end up notbeing overtly motivated to star as M. Bison... The true star of the franchise.

Finally someone out there loves Raul Julia as much as I do. He was a truly amazing actor. A powerful screen presence. He could be completely over the top and also quietly stoic. Like all the greats, when he was in a scene, he was the actor that drew your eyes to his performance. Everyone else was on the screen just to support his performance.

I often wonder what characters Raul would have been great for if he were still around today. I always thought he would have been a good choice for Count Dooku in Star Wars.

This movie is legendary in my eyes. I grew up watching him in Street Fighter and the Addams Family. Raul Julia was a great actor in his lifetime and there will never be another actor like him. Rest In Peace Raul 🇵🇷

New found respect for Raul Julia! I had no clue of his reasons to take on the role. As a child, I did very much enjoy the movie part of also being a JVC and action / fighting movie in general aficionado + as an SF2 World Champion arcade fan. What an inspiration, may God take care of his soul!

Its camp. This movie is fucking amazing just like The Room, or the Batman Adam West TV show. And making camp isnt easy. For example, Batman & Robin was plain bad, because it didnt took itself seriously, for a movie to be campy, it needs to take itself seriously while being absolutely absurd. And Raul Julia...Jesus Christ, the guy was dying, he was playing a video game villain, but he didnt care, he was the first on set, and always remembered his lines (unlike most of the cast), he gave his all for the role...like the director said, "Raul was the only one with an excuse for not caring about the movie, but he was actually the one who showed the most care for it".

This movie cost a trillion Bisondollars to make. But joking a side. Raul's commitment to make a movie memorable for his children is real tear jerker. If that is not fatherly love i don't know what it is.

I never knew that Julia was dying due to the cancer, and take this role just for his kids ... this really hit me hard. I first saw this movie on vhs in like 96/97as a kid and liked it like every other JCVD action movie, but Julia stole the film with his dedication for M.Bison, now I know why he did this, and I am glad that he took this oppurtunity.

Fun fact: The soundtrack for the film is amazing especially if you're a fan of 90s hip hop. It features Ice Cube, MC Hammer, The Pharcyde, Nas, LL Cool J, Paris and Ahmad (Back in the Day) It even has a scrapped track from Nas's Illmatic which is considered by some to be the best hip hop album of all time.

In high school drama class, I did the Col. Guile speech for a performance. I dressed up just like him and even tried to do his accent! It was funny! I got an A+ though!

As a kid in the 90s I friggin loved this movie back in the day. I caught it recently expecting it to be the worst movie ever and it was bad, but Godamn was I entertained. Awesome retrospect on this film!
