⛄ NORTHEAST PASSAGE ON ICEBREAKER 🧊 - • ⛄ Northeast Passage on...
This is a film about a traveller in the strange land called North Korea or officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Tours to the DPRK are tightly scheduled and normally include a visit to the demilitarised zone, museums and statues to Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, Pyongyang’s amusements parks, chandelier-laden metro system and showcase entertainment facilities such as the Circus and the SchoolChildren's Palace. In addition to these, I took a flightseeing flight on a Mi-17 helicopter over the DPRK's capital city of Pyongyang. As well, as my tour was an extended one, it also went the northeast of the DPRK to the tri-country area around the Rason Special Economic Zone where the DPRK, China and Russia conjoin.
The cult of the Kims is perhaps the most extraordinary feature of the DPRK. Images or statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il are found everywhere. These graven images are effectively worshipped. This film shows scenes of the veneration of the Kims (Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il) that were witnessed.
The government guides control both what you can see and also what you can take photographs of. If you take a photograph of the military, construction or something that they feel does not portray the DPRK in a positive light then they force you to delete the photograph. On exiting the country, the border guards also reviewed photographs to see if they conformed to the aforementioned standards. Despite these restrictions, this film contains images that accurately portray the state of the country as I saw it.

I'm a dedicated subscriber. And this is by far your most informative and interesting video to date. Your extensive knowledge is very impressive. Very surprised you had so much access to the country outside Pyongyang. Keep up the good work. Well done! I will be sharing this on my social platforms. With all the U.S. interest regarding the escalation of the nuclear program, more people need to see this to really understand the oppression these people endure everyday.

+CroDan It's generally agreed that the DPRK finances its weapons programs by means of trade with China; money earned by North Korean labourers sent abroad; and various types of illicit activities. Please check the current prices with one of the tour companies offering such trips.

The NatGeo is technically superior but I am sure he meant the information value of your video being so much better. I think absolutely the same. Many people think of NK as a dark grey gulag, with undernourished people like from a concentration camp looking out from barrack windows with bars. We see there are people just like you and me, and they are not as closed as some western propaganda wants to make us believe. Some of the women are stunningly beautiful. If you allow me some criticism, the music is often to loud and too much.

I was fascinated to watch North Korea documentaries back in the 1990s and 2000s, when even limited access and secretive recordings were a big thing, but now any videos that come online are nothing more than than virtually the same places and sites, just revisited in more current times. I do applaud the work put into this video by the originator. It’s really hard not to shake one’s head and laugh here and there when seeing various images and hearing the North Korean version of life and history as everyone on the outside knows what’s truth and what’s North Korean fiction. The Kim dynasty continues its ways in building up their military to keep South Korea and Japan on edge, while hiding the fact that even with covert help and materials from outside countries, they still have a third world military. This goes on while citizens continue to starve and die, malnourishment is rampant, imprisonment is frequent all while the jolly and fat dictator, gets fatter and lives the best capitalist life, everyday.

I've watched dozens of North Korea documentaries/travelogues on youtube. This is one of the best I've seen. The time lapse of the venerations and obeisances to the Kim statues was fascinating. Great editing and narration. It captures several points of beauty in this desolate totalitarian state. Thank you for not bowing to the Kim statues. Quite a journey. Subscribed.

Little bit of a hypocrite there. Travelling to North Korea, having no problem in funding their tourist industry, but not following their customs by bowing to their leaders statues who basically provided and approved your tour. If you are so righteous then dont go travelling to North Korea at all !
@tletter
@tletter 6 років тому
+Alquimista Boi South Korea had extensive businesses operating in the DPRK, e.g. the Kaesong industrial complex which provided the DPRK with about $100 million in hard currency a year. Compared with that, tourism is small change. Hence your comments are better directed against the countries that have extensive business dealings with the DPRK including China. Furthermore according to a report by Congressional Research Service, the United States provided the North over $1.3 billion in assistance, mostly food aid and energy assistance, between 1995 and 2008. The U.S. also sent the assistance to the DPRK in January 2016. So perhaps you should be contacting Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama and raging against them rather than the handful of tourists who visit the DPRK. If as you believe, tourism was such an important source of funds for the DPRK then governments including the U.S. and U.K. ones would have banned travel there years ago and the UN sanctions would have imposed a travel ban. However, they did not, so perhaps you should write your government about imposing a complete travel ban and to stop sending aid to the DPRK regime.

A lot of that has to do with the fact that all major and minor networks are state subsidized to some capacity, and have an agenda to present in exchange for that funding. Seriously, everyone from HBO to Fox and CBS receive government subsidies, and there are very specific rules and stipulations in place that one must follow if they want more government money. There is a propagandic goal in mind when Western media create a "documentary" on a state enemy like the DPRK, Cuba, Venezuela or Angola. They want to present an image of North Korea as far more dystopic and brutal than it actually is. North Korea is not a communist paradise, but considering what they went through as a country from 1951 onwards to today (especially in the 90s with the March of Suffering) they're doing significantly better than the West depicts them to be. They'd be doing a lot better though if we peeled back the trading sanctions, but of course we can't have a successful socialist North Korea existing right above a competing (and currently failing) capitalist South Korea.

This is still one of my favorite North Korean videos even though it's nearly two and a half years old. It feels very personal yet informative as a documentary. There is plenty of commentary, yet it is directly related to your experience. I love the emphasis on the boots-on-the-ground, through-my-own-eyes sort of presentation. The mix of video and stills are quite good, and you are definitely not trying too hard to make it into a certain "look." And the choice of music immersed the viewer into the narrative. The narration/voice over also isn't too formal, which makes it feel like a travel journal rather than a documentary.

Really eye-opening and well done. I find and devour stuff on the DPRK, and this was somehow refreshingly new. May I add something? A friend at my church is married to a NK defector. She got out with her older brother at the age of 17. The backstory is that it was just the 3 of them, mother having died when she was 5 years old. Her father was highly talented artist and was rewarded for that. They lived quite well by NK standards. When the father was diagnosed with malignant and spreading lung cancer, he arranged for the two kids to get out through China. They had about 25,000 U.S worth of gold on them when they left. The father, she said, had obviously been setting this up, because it went off hitchless. She said that she and her brother knew nothing until the day before they left. Her father was an amazing man who, even though riddled with terminal cancer, was surely tortured terribly before he was granted death. She said he shamelessly explained to her the uncomfortable way she would have to hide the gold pieces when going through China. And she told me that her father said that life in the West would be worth any suffering … That if things didn't go right and she was faced with rape that the brother was not to lose his life defending her honor. She said he told them to just get to America at any cost. Her brother married a girl in Soul and lives there now where he is a college professor. She is a curator and expert restorer at the Chicago Art History Museum. But I digress. I started the story because of the narrator's comment on the elevator rules in Pyongyang. Sue, my Korean friend's name, said that they lived in Pyongyang high-rise, but said that if you were in 10 floor building then you had no lift. And that many old and sick are either carried up and down or they don't go out.
