His flashing left and right hooks are superb, the excellence is that his using them as a counterpunch after he avoids getting hit with his great ducking movement. This guy's going to be an impressive Champion.

Wanted the streak to continue but this was great for him. He showed that his power is still there past 6 rounds. Now he needs to fix his mistakes on freezing up on clinch situations and needs to go for more body shots. Can't wait to watch what he can do now that the pressure of keeping the streak alive is over!

Berlanga is my favorite prospect right now, and I'm honestly really glad he went the distance with Nicholson. It showed that he does have stamina and doesn't just instantly fade after not KOing his opponent inside of 1 round, but it also showed several things he needs to work on, which I'm sure will be a massive help in future fights. 1. Head movement. Berlanga doesn't move his head at all, really, and this is what allowed Nicholson to catch him with shots sometimes, especially that big right hand in round 8. That being said, it also showed that Berlanga has a chin. Nicholson doesn't have the power of guys like Canelo, GGG, Lemieux, or Benavidez, but he doesn't have pillows in his gloves, and Berlanga took those shots very well, especially considering they came late in the fight and he'd been throwing massive shots all night. Without any kind of head movement, however, he'd get put on his ass by truly elite competition. I think this is the most important thing for him to work on. 2. Footwork. I noticed several instances where Berlanga would actually move his back foot first when he'd circle/approach Nicholson, which can end up crossing your feet and leaving you off-balance and vulnerable. Berlanga's style mixes well with being flat-footed, but he'll need to be able to move and get out of harm's way as he rises through the ranks. 3. More bodywork. The kind of power Berlanga has in both hands is utterly debilitating, and driving that power into a fighter's body will cripple them and take away their movement and offense, as well as open them up to a lights-out shot upstairs. 4. More jabs. When he snaps it out there, Berlanga has a monstrously stiff jab, again owing to the insane natural power he's got in his hands. If he keeps smashing his opponent with that jab, it'll keep them from being overly aggressive and set them up for the overhand right. Overall, I'm really impressed with Berlanga's performance. It was a step up in competition, considering he'd only ever faced one top 100 guy, and Nicholson was rated at #39 (going by Boxrec). Berlanga was totally dominant, and even though a couple of those knockdowns were questionable, there's no denying his power is for real. I'm really hoping we see great things from this badass.
