Grant was badass in this scene. But people are sleeping on the fact that Malcolm gets out the car, gets Rexy’s attention, probably scared shitless, and yells “get the kids!” Thinking only of them. Legend.

@@Alexshorten7343Yeah, the actual likelihood is that the T Rex is comparable to the modern day chicken apparently according to least some paleontologists and T Rex's vision of us humans wouldn't have been based on movement (or least would have been very unlikely to have been).

From the moment they learn to understand words, children are taught to listen to adults and that they’ll protect them so when an adult abandons a child in danger, it literally shatters one of their greatest beliefs.

And it fits in with the overarching theme of Speilberg's work; a caretaker, such as a father, that takes off leaving his loved ones. Like in this, Close Encounter, Indy, Hook, Jaws... I read somewhere about how he expresses his feelings about his neglectful father.

On the other hand, It's human nature to protect children, it's what made us such a dominant species, we protect children even if they're not our genetic blood, we feel the necessity to protect them, some even give up on having their own children to take care of someone else's biological children, that connection between humans is due to our act of assignment names, but not names like "Adam" or "Eva", but names like "Mother, father, grandmother, aunt, nephew, niece, uncle...", as some children will call elderly women "aunt" even if they weren't introduced to that person previously. This is something humans have been doing for a very long time and is what made our ancestors prevail and pass their bloodline and genes forward.

I was lucky enough to experience this in the theater 27 times. I was a bit obsessed and the theatre by my house played it all summer for $1.50. I went almost every day 😂. This was a cinematic experience like NO OTHER. You could hear people breathing. It was awesome.

one of the greatest film scenes of all time. And at the time it was even greater because NO ONE had seen such things before on the big screen. The 90's were the best for films when it came to the marriage between story and visual effects. Terminator 2, Forrest gump, Independence Day, even the Phantom Menace with its visual effects at the time was insane...I could go on.

New movies throw in music and sound effects all over the place to frighten and force a reaction. The silence makes you feel as if it could have been filmed by someone being right there. The Indominus is just an animated clusterf**k of roaring, eating people left and right with constant hero armor which just makes it a little silly. The Rex from Jurassic Park is genuinely scary because it feels like an actual unpredictable animal which have been set lose. Love it.

I love how they portray the T. rex as a curious animal exploring their new surroundings and interacting with new things in their environment. You can tell this is all new to her and that she's trying to get a feel for everything.

@@parkerdixon-word6295 Actually, they could see the T-Rex in quite a few shots. When it slams its head into the roof of the car they weren't ready for the pressure of the impact, the animatronic was malfunctioning and they were genuiniely terrified.

@@Gencoil Yup! The animatronic wasn't actually supposed to break the glass and stick it's head in at all, the heavy rain made it malfunction and drop further than it should've. The kids had such genuine terror in the take because of it that that take made the final cut!

That's coz most of it was CGI than animatronics which made the movements so seamless. In fact Jurassic Park was a pioneering film for its extensive use of CGI.

One of the many reasons this holds up today was how well they blended animatronics and CGI, at 3:55 just before Lex flicks on the light and the animatronic Rex is nudging the car, then once it zooms in slightly they seamlessly switch out to CGI

Don't you love how the t.rex acts like a real animal and doesn't straight up charge the car and try to tear it open as soon as it sees the light? It even does stupid stuff that an animal would, like trying to rip the tire off the wheel for no apparent reason. If only the sequels tried to do this.

The Lost World also had them act like animals too tho. The Tyrannosaurs went after the humans because one of them had the blood of their baby and wanted probably thought that they hurt the infant and the parents wanted to make sure they won't come back and hurt their son again.

I love the dialogue between Alan and Malcolm right at the start here. "Kids get scared" "What's to be scared about its just a hiccup in the power" "I didn't say I was scared" "I didn't say you were scared" They're both completely terrified and know deep down they are in serious trouble but are playing it as cool as possible.

Malcolm is the one who knows they might be in real trouble. He had worked developing mathematical models for the park. He had some knowledge beforehand about how everything was supposed to work he knew that a catastrophic cascade of events could derail it. You can hear him in the helicopter joking about it. He just didn't think it would happen in the first trial run with him inside.

One of the best movies scenes ever. I love how Ian and Alan aren’t worried about themselves, they are just worried about the kids. Ian even tried to outrun Rexy in order for Alan to try and get them. And Rexy doesn’t immediately eat all the people, she’s curious at first. Which is how real animals are.

This is an example of story telling at its peak... no background scores. .. no screaming people... just the animals breathing in the backdrop of rain and thunder ..yet still conveys the horror thats about to unfold... still remember watching this scene in theatre in india.. it changed my life!

Ian Malcolm hits totally different at age 35 than at age 8. At age 8 I remember thinking "Why on earth would you do that? Alan had it handled!" But I see now that Ian would rather sacrifice his life to save the kids, than to risk finding out what would happen if Alan's distraction didn't work. That's very powerful.

I never really noticed it until recently but Ian says "Get the kids!" a few times as he runs away with the flare. Like you I thought he was just being reckless but now I realize he was drawing the T-rex away from the cars so Alan can get Lex and Tim. Malcolm put his life on the line to save them. Until that point we just saw him as a sardonic know-it-all but here you realize he has a heart.

This is exactly why Dr. Alan Grant will forever be one of my favorite fictional protagonists. This man literally flagged down a Trex to save 2 kids he barely even knows and did it whilst being terrified in the process and kept said kids safe throughout the entirety of the movie. Mans is a whole unit. 😤

Ian Malcolm's my favorite. And Ian ran in the opposite direction from the cars to save the kids and giving Alan more time to get them out of the car. Ian literally sacrificed his own safety and almost died trying to save the kids! He even still walked with a limp many years afterwards!

6:16 when I was a kid this small scene terrified me for good. The yellow eyes, the black pupils, the light, the roar. The sudden feeling that Evil is now watching you. You can't run, you can't hide, you can't fight. The basilisk saw you. This whole scene is a true masterpiece, but this small part for some reason stuck with me.

2:20 the single greatest shot in cinematic history. The slow pan upward as the theropod swallows the goat whole and then looks back at the cars as though it's been there the whole time, revealing its teeth and rumbling lowly is just a pure thrill of heights that seem impossible to reach by today's standards. Even the noise it makes in that moment is by far the most realistic according to modern science.

In case if anyone doesn’t know the Tyrannosaurus slamming itself onto the roof window of the car wasn’t actually part of the movie, but the screams of Lex and Tim were real screams, they decided to include that into the movie. That specific scene was probably caused by the fact that the Tyrannosaurus animatronic was short circuiting because of the water

What gets me about this scene (and frankly makes it more intense) is how believable the Rex's behavior is. She's not behaving like some typical movie monster throughout the scene. The Rex is acting and reacting to the situation like a real animal would.

T. rex didn’t have the vocal cords to make such a sound like in this movie . That has been established They got the sound by mixing a elephant sound with a tiger sound . Also it's basically come out since then that Rexes probably had one of the best eyesights for an animal maybe ever. The part of their brain that did vision was huge compared to many animals. Many paleontologists have watched this and said a Rex would have no issue seeing any of them even with no movement. Still a great scene though.

Spielberg is such a master storyteller. The Jurassic World directors would have added tons of music and comic relief to the scene, and in doing so breaking most of the tension. Spielberg instead chose for sounddesign (rain, the Rex footsteps, the squeaking fence etc.). The fear and impact is so much more intense. Great directors know when to use music and when not to.

@@kanahbis3236 The whole point is taking a shot at the new movies, because thats all they do. The new movies are garbage compared to the old ones, even if the dinos are nice to look at and they can roar all day long. They won't ever be able to make a movie as good as Spielberg until they remove the friendly dino nonsense and bring the fear in these dinos that people once had of them. They're not big cuddly Rexys or Raptors, they're wild beasts that would eat your face off the second they caught wind of you.

There's tons of comic relief in this scene alone, with Gennaro's comment about the power, him running away and hiding in the bathroom, and Malcolm wiping the condensation from the windshield while the kids are getting attacked. The true craftsmanship is the fact that all these comedic beats don't break the tension of the scene. I also think it's unfair to compare any of the sequels to the original. The original is lighting in a bottle, one of the greatest movies ever made. Comparing any movie to that is unfair and an unrealistic standard for any movie to have put on it.

You can be even more impressed when you know, in some of these shots, it is a full CGI T-Rex moving on screen, done in computers with far less power than what is available today, just to point some of these shots, the first time he shows up and walks between the two cars and gives his first roar, and another remarkable one, is when he turns the car upside down, now this is a legendary job done by the artists there.

Holds up?...it looks better than the Jarassic films of late. I can't stand all this modern cinema CGI I just know what I'm looking at isn't really there, and it just ruins it for me alot of the time. With the kind of budgets these movies are getting (100's of millions of dollars) they could afford more animatronics. It's just lazy film making.

This scene is such monster-movie perfection. The rex casually gnawing through the fence, planting its foot down and roaring, shattering all sense of safety or control the humans had. It’s like it stepped out of prehistory into modern times-both a realization of Jurassic Park’s mission to bring dinosaurs back to life and at the same time a horrifying wake-up call.

The sound department knocked it out of the park when they created the calls of the dinosaurs. Blending known animals together to create something entirely new. I can hear at least two of the animals for the T-Rex clearly. One is a lion, the other, an elephant. Dilophosaurus's chittering noise was apparently a goose or swan call. Speaking of those, props to the design team for including the neck frills on the little guy. You didn't know what it was going to do, but when it opened the frill and let out that constant, angry cry, you knew Nedry was going to die. Even the worst quality scene in that movie, where Grant and the kids get caught in a CGI stampede, it's still amazing to watch.

This movie was so awesomely iconic and terrifying. I saw it in theaters when I was 6 years old and my mom had to take me out of the theater during this scene. What an incredible experience. Movies are soft AF now. Sad that kids will never experience the movie magic of the 80s and 90s. They don’t even know what they’re missing.

I just love how Jurassic Park is one of the most rewatchable films ever. I have watched this film dozens of times in my life...and it never really gets old or boring, even when I know exactly what is going to happen next. Its incredible how one film from 1993 still has as much thrills as when it first came out, than 99% of films that have come out in the 30 years since. I'd list it as one of the top 10 movies ever, certainly the top dinosaur film ever, hands down.

most of the best movies are from 1988-2005, this is golden age and yes jurassic park is forever the best dinosaurs film...but hook (1991) is the best movie for peter pan universe, robin hood prince of thieves (1991) is the best robin hood movie and we can continue like that from willow (1988) until troy (2004)

One thing I always thought about is that if Gennaro hadn't left the car, the T. rex might not have even bothered coming through the fence. It probably would've finished its meal and left. But once it saw something scurry off out of the car. It was probably thinking "What is that? Better check it out"

My favorite time seeing this was on laserdisc at a Sears department store on one of those new fancy surround sound stereos that they set up as a home theater. Since it had a remote. I kept the dialogue quiet and turned up the rain. So i could hear those low end thumps of T Rex walking. And since they are whispering. It just sets it up for loud you can get this. Like, talk about the quiet before the storm. And then ya got to have it full blast when it finally gets out and screams. Pretty sure i got to the part where it attacks the kids before someone came over and was all like, just what the hell do you think you are doing kid?

@@Ilaunchnukes I enjoyed JW and Fallen Kingdom but they had too much cartoony CGI for my liking. I'm sure Dominion will be fun but I fear the era of filmmaking that utilises practical effects over solely CGI is long dead, and that was what gave Jurassic Park its extra punch.

@@thebatman4279 Considering that animatronics have a tendency to break down, and they're way more expensive to make, I'd say CGI is a great alternative. The practical effects are still the best though

Idk. In my opinion, Jurassic World captures a lot of the same spirit and fear as the original without being a complete copy cat. There is nothing wrong with CGI when done well and this movie has plenty of it too. Not as much as JW but still

I still remember having to leave the theater early because I got scared at a later portion of this movie but I was still in awe seeing this girl and the others. My favorite is still the Velociraptors but dang it she was a site to see. These guys were the apex predator of their time for a reason. Amazing animal and I still love this movie.

The little smirk beginning on Grants face when he first see the Rex. It’s just a fraction of a second, 3:35. He knows they are in trouble, but he’s thrilled to see the Rex at the same time. Not a word spoken, brilliant!

noticed that back in 93 when I saw this its probably why he hesitated at first it was his first time seeing a real live t rex it was in awe .Kind of like how he was in the beginning of the movie when he saw the brachiosaurus

I love how the T Rex just acts like a curious animal in this scene. One that knows it has no natural predators and has no reason to fear anything. Like how lions or tigers or Polar Bears act in their natural habitats. It's a great touch.

Yeah, that's something I don't like about the direction the newer movies have taken. In Jurassic Park 1 - 3 the dinosaurs were treated as though they were ancient wild animals brought to the present day through the magic of science. The newer movies try to paint them as genetic freak show monsters unlike anything that would have actually lived 65 million years ago. I mean, I get why they did it, we have learned so much more about what dinosaurs were in the past nearly 30 years since this movie came out and the best way to justify it was to say that these weren't actually dinosaurs but Frankenstein esque monsters with genetic anomalies. Still though, I miss the dinosaurs being handled like they were actual animals with real animal behavior and instinct and not psychopathic blood thirsty monsters.

@@nathanmcdonald610 They don't try to do that. If you're thinking of "genetic freak show monsters", I think that applies to the Indominus Rex, Indoraptor and Scorpius Rex. The other dinosaurs aren't "psychopathic" or "bloodthirsty". They're just animals in a world that they aren't prepared for.

@@SirKolass Never implied that being an apex predator made something invincible. Also, lions actually DO NOT have much to fear. There's absolutely no animal in their natural habitat that hunts them. Unless you want to say humans and even then they have little fear because there have been several verified accounts of lions actually hunting humans for prey. Lions actually actively hunt elephants, giraffe, rhino, hippo, and so on. There have been verified accounts of lions hunting and killing gorillas. Again, not saying they're invincible but the literally don't have anything they need to fear from natural habitat. 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️

Got to see it last year in cinema and it will never cease to be among the pinnacle of cinematic entertainment. It's a shame nowadays studios just capitalize off such great products with so little passion and care. Purely money hungry.

@lonerblader85 Then you know what a memorable experience it was. I was 10. I remember there was a child behind us (probably a toddler) *crying* out of *terror* every time the T-rex was on screen. In *The Lost World,* the audience literally *cheered* and *applauded* when the first raptor jumped out of the long grass and again when the credits rolled. *It'd been THAT SPECTACULAR!* Personally, I feel sorry for those who only got to experience *JP3* or the *Jurassic World* movies in the cinemas.

I've always been so captivated by the realistic feeling of the scene and how real the Rex feels that I never stopped to appreciate how convincing the acting is, from every single person. Lex and Tim, Lex especially.

Funny you say that, during the rain, it caused the T-Rex to move without any help from the animatronics. During the scene where he Smashes through the glasses it’s actually a legit and not acted out, it scared the actual kids.

@@jedayesingh2842 Not true. The scene showing the kid's scared faces is a separate shot. The one you're talking about is the T-rexs head smashing through the top-glass of the car, and that scene used adult stunt doubles.

This is so refreshing to watch compared to modern "big predator attack" scenes. The T-Rex isn't unstoppably violent nor willing to risk its life to attack the main characters. It takes time for it to think that the car MIGHT be prey and as soon as biting the underside and tires tastes wrong, it stops. Comparing this to something like the V-rex scene in King Kong (2005) makes you appreciate when movies remember that animals are ANIMALS, not villains.

The V-rexs in KK are actually meant to be monsters, not animals. They're all radioactive mutants.

@@nahor88 none of the animals in the 2005 king kong are radioactive, it takes place in 1933 which is well before any kind of nuclear technology. the animals in that movie are just meant to be weird descendants of prehistoric animals that evolved in isolation from the rest of the natural world

The V Rexes were wild and hungry though and super aggressive from living on skull island. This T Rex lived in captivity and is well-fed, so it's not gonna immediately show aggression. Also give King Kong credit cause the way that Kong himself behaves was actually top-notch for a movie.
