One thing that preachers always do...ALWAYS...is say something like..."this is what the Bible says, now let me tell you what it means...or let me tell you what god means by that". It's a mixture of literally 4 different languages, (German, French, Greek, Latin) and has so many rules and interpretations literally due to the simple order of words. How do you tell which parts are true and which ones are not? The rule of thumb I see, is whatever passages are inconvenient or embarrassing are the ones considered fiction, and all the good stuff is considered true. You just can't have it that way. Very little of the bible is independently verified anyway, and much of it so insane you can dismiss it outright.
