It was a Thrilla in Manilla. Muhammad Ali had done the impossible, recapturing the heavyweight title from George Foreman. But he was not satisfied. There was one man who had given him too much trouble. One man who could be pointed to as evidence that perhaps Ali was not the greatest heavyweight of all time. That man was Smokin Joe Frazier. Each had won one of their two epic encounters. Now it was time to put the rivalry to rest once and for all.
There was no telling how the fight would go. Each had refined and enhanced the skills they had pitted against each other prior.
And so, this fight was not a redo, but a continuation, built on the strategies, techniques, and intense personal hatred carried over from the previous two.
1st Fight
Their first match, known as the Fight of the Century had already become ingrained in the American psych as one of the greatest matches in history.
The fight had been fueled in part by the intense personal dislike the two champions felt for each other.
Ali had so enraged Joe that in his locker room before the fight, Frazier had prayed to god to help him kill Ali.

I truly believe this one fight (and the three against Frazier specifically) were the cause of much of Ali's brain trauma later in life. He took so many hard head shots in this fight, and in every fight against Frazier. When you're feeling like you want to fall asleep between rounds in this high-adrenaline environment something is not right in the brain. Watch some Frazier footage and see how many large men went down after just a couple of those shots that Ali took for 14 rounds. RIP, champ(s).

Could be a part he learnt from Pro Wrestling. Not about being fake, but about selling your opponent. How to become bigger than life character. He put over Frazier in their first match, even when Frazier was a dear friend to him Ali mocked him like a true Heel and lost. That did create buzz, that did made Frazier top dog, and they did had 3 matches which were selling out seats left and right. Ali controversial figure, one of the greatest boxers to ever live. One of the greatest entertainers that ever lived in a combat sport. I man that was a huge pro wrestling fan, and that culture is always being overlooked because there is a monopoly on it with the cheap imitation of wwe.

I’ve watched this memorable fight a number of times, but this is the first that I’ve noticed just how frequently Frazier punched Ali below the belt and received no warnings. Especially in the 9th and 10th rounds - you can’t miss it. Those are low blows, yet the ref either didn’t see them from his vantage point or didn’t feel them “low enough”. I love your channel, btw, and appreciate all the time and effort you put in to these peerless breakdowns of classic fights.

Ali never complained once and took it as, "it comes with the territory when you live in the game of Boxing." Many fighters today would holler at the referees or fall to the ground. Seeing the picture at the end of these 2 godly warriors sitting together and seeing the quote that Muhammad Ali said about him made me tear up. That's crazy and unexpected but that's amazing that these fighters who hate each other and were willing to fight for literally forever respect each other and are cool. People today can never show this type of respect. I hope if I'm still living, I can find someone who can be the one and only rival that brings the best out of me one day. It was also then rumored that Futch was just first to stop the fight for his boxer. Whether these rumors be true or not, it just shows how deadly that battle was. I felt like I was with these 2 champions in the ring, and was worrying what would happen next, even though I had already seen this fight more than 10 times. Your narration was so passionate, music so perfectly matched, and all of these facts, which I had never known before. These two men sacrificed their lives to give the people and their grudges life in the 1960's and 1970's. I believe this is the fight that jarred Ali's brain just that tiny bit too much and eventually damaged him and killed him. Frazier was his kryptonite, it was indeed like watching Superman go down and down and down. Frazier had just a bit more of everything that Ali didn't, and Ali had just a bit more of everything Joe didn't have equally in every round they faced. It was such a trade off and back and forth of will and determination and power and speed and movement and ducking and bobbing and punching and grappling - back and forth each trading off and giving up one for another at different times. These breakdowns show each of these moments....it is amazing to watch.

Imagine if Ali and smoking joes fought at today’s day and age , at arenas with air conditioning, better preparation , they would be unstoppable and could probably go 30 rounds if not more easily . The only reason Frazier and Foreman both are not considered one of the greatest of all time is because they had to fight and lose to Ali. Foreman was dominant for a short time in the 90's even. And they never made a fight between him and Tyson, probably because King knew how bad a matchup that was for Tyson. Foreman's style matched up very well against Tyson. Parachute a prime Frazier or Foreman into the 80's or 90's and they would be an unstoppable force. Frazier and Foreman are both once in a generation type talents. Ali is a once in a forever type talent. And they were all more or less in their primes at the same time.

I have two late teen grandsons who maintain that if you could take Ali and Tyson in their prime, that Tyson would "smash Ali to smithereens" as they say...LOL... @@andrewmiller4885 Ali was actually a wrestling fan, he based his personality on Gorgeous George. He wasn't nearly as confident and brash in his mind. As for Tyson v Ali, Tyson had that peak-a-boo style that gave Ali fits. Ali was always able to adjust to almost anything, so it would be a long fight. Fraizer was Ali's best fight, and Tyson fought a lot like Fraizer, except he had better power in both hands. I think it would come down to heart, specifically Tyson's heart. Tyson has shown he didn't really have the same sort of heart that other greats had. So I'll say Ali by decision.
