This is part 2 in a two-part series. Please check out the link below for the first installment. And please check out the book Cherokee Bill: Black Cowboy Indian Outlaw by Art Burton!
Cherokee Bill, the notorious young outlaw of the Indian Territory, met his fate on March 17, 1896, at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Following this premature demise, his family took Bill back to Fort Gibson and buried him at the Cherokee National Cemetery, known today as the Citizens Cemetery. And less than a year following the execution, Bill's young brother Clarence squared things up with Ike Rogers, the former Deputy who betrayed and captured Cherokee Bill. Also mentioned in this episode: Hanging Judge Isaac Parker, Henry Starr, The Harder They Fall, Johnny Cash, and Frank Canton. #wildwest #history #cowboy

There is (or at least used to be, haven't been back in the area for a while) a Cherokee Steakhouse in Minnesota. Cherokee Bill was probably the original owner/founder. You have to respect his effort trying to go straight despite all the struggles! Great episode.

Great Podcasts and Josh's sense of humor and matter of fact approach to old west history makes for some easy listening. More like he's having a conversation with his listener which is a great approach in a podcast. He sure does research his subjects well which is a lot more than some of the other old west podcasts on UKposts where the facts and photos are as often incorrect as they are factual and the presenter has no real affinity for their subject and is basically shooting for (no pun intended) clicks and views. Keep up the great work Josh, your a great story teller.

I live 50 miles south of Ft. Smith and about 30 east of Indian Territory. Lot of history and things to see. Museum is great! Judge Parker , Cherokee Bill , Belle Starr, Bass Reeves and the like. Also Belle Starr cave in the Poteau Mountains (gotta walk) . Neat stuff to see. Some of the Starr kin still live around here. I don't have a dog in the hunt. Just my opinion. Anywho..... Come see us. Almost forgot the Spiro Mound. Not the frontier days. This is ancient. Rune Stone at Heavener too.All in west Arkansas and east Oklahoma

Thank you Josh for the fantastic describing of the relationship between The Nation Tribes and the Friedmen, the family structur sounds a bit Mafia style...I know a little bout this times, here in Germany in compare to the US at this years we trained armies by the dozen and push the modernization. Maybe a little of the Oklahoma style ( besides the riff raff all over the country) were'nt not worse for my country sometimes I think, and I like your perfomance anyway. As a Christian that judge's quote after the jail shoot out is spine shivering. As I watch this stuff I often wonder what these outlaws' eternity hold. I know they had access to the truth of God and I know they knew what they were doing, but I guess I end up thinking that because it was a long time ago they were somehow simple and ignorant of the deeper truths of life. But that judge makes me think they were actually more in tune with godly truth and moral reality than we are today, with all our distractions. The hangin judge seemed to know he could very well be sending men to hell, and didn't shy away from warning them of it. Addition: God does assign meaning to numbers. 13 is known as the number of rebellion. Against God specifically. Definitely fitting. Another edit, I edited this after it'd been up for, you guessed it, 13 minutes
@OutnBacker
@OutnBacker 10 місяців тому
I don't put much thought into numerology because it just complicates the Simple Truth and tends to lead people into cultic thinking. As to the people back then being simple and ignorant about the deeper truths of life: I don't think that either. The deepest thinkers in history were the earliest philosophers like Socrates, Locke, and Church Elders such s St. Augustine. The subject of crime and punishment was a settled issue from way before Christianity, and wanton murder has always been treated pretty much the same by amost every civilization from the jungles of Borneo, the Sumerians, the Romans, and all subsequent Christain kingdoms. What has changed on the issue has been a late interpretation of those understandings by us, a latter age civilzation - the Post Modernists. The concept of Rehabilitation was never considered before the 1840's. It came about as a result of the Wesleyan Revival in England that lasted from the 1790's til about the 1840's and spread to America. With that Christian revival came the idea that we are not the final arbiter of men's souls. Therefore, society should render mercy in the hope that a man could experince his own personal revival while in prison. it was the Quakers who led this idea of prison reform and were instrumental in institutionalizing the US prison system in such a way that there were two Christian services a day and a constant barrage of Bible reading and lessons taught to anyone who wanted to take part. The only reading material allowed in a cell was the Bible. No one can say how effective this was, but that was the thinking and the beginnings of the Liberal policies in our legal system today. Such never was the case in classical times. In this context, I don't think the outlaws in the old west had any doubt about whatthey were doing, or what the proper consequences should be if caught. Law and order was well understood. Sin was well defined, and they knew that a hanging was societies proper way of expunging evil. Society was only responsible for allowing a man the chance to make his peace with God - not to be the final arbiter and give him a pass. That was seen as God's business. We have lost sight of that across the entire spectrum of criminal behavior, and that has reulted in the chaos today.
