It definitely seems like a lot of personal resentment towards the people he viewed to be at the forefront of this "technological enslavement" was involved in his decision to go about it in the way he did, and most of the examples that immediately come to mind of causing a big enough disturbance to divert the general society's attention (on par with the looming threat of bombings) involve interfacing with the existing technology at some level - which I'm guessing he hated.

it is odd. One of the possibiilites with super intelligent AI is that it might end up having the conclussion that humans are dangerous, are they must be eliminated. It is fukcing scary.
