At the edge of the Dead Mountains lies an enchanting, sparsely populated area - the inner Alm Valley. Especially in winter up to 120 half-grown ravens gather in the area around the wild animal park to steal food. This is the biggest permanent settlement of ravens in all of central Europe. They are blacker than night and smarter than parrots: ravens are capable of astonishing mental feats. How well does their bird’s brain really work? This documentary probes deep into the raven’s soul and follows his awkward flight around the entire globe.The film tells about the life and activities of the ravens. It tells about the observation of the Corpus Christi holiday and the magical "Echo Blowing" at Alm lake, about bringing the cattle down from the high lying pastures and about the hunt. About the idyllic research institute with all its residents - the students, the geese, chickens, dogs and sheep - and about Cumberland Wild Animal Park that inconspicuously and harmoniously hugs the shore of the Alm.

Wow! The pine trees covered with snow look indistinguishable from an oil painting. Its so beautiful! I miss that soft peaceful quiet atmosphere that is a unique part of a still winter day where everything is covered in a fresh blanket of snow. Its the most euphoric feeling of peace that you cant describe to anyone whos never seen it or lived in a place that never has a true winter season. Ive been in Florida for 15 years but I do terribly miss a perfect winter day so badly sometimes. I really liked everything about this video.

I've seen footage of Ravens walking side by side with pedestrians at a traffic crosswalk. They're dropping nuts with hard shells onto the pavement as they go. When the traffic lights change allowing the cars to drive by, they wait on the sidewalk. When the traffic lights change again, they walk with the next set of pedestrians eating the nuts from the shells that the cars have broken open by driving over them. How clever is that!
@stormysampson1257
@stormysampson1257 5 років тому
CrueMagnon, it is supremely cool. We humans who have never lived with animals have no idea that we humans ARE NOT the most 'intelligent' of species. Not even close. Intelligence is the ability to thrive within an ecosystem and be a part of that ecosystem causing other species to thrive. We humans belong to NO ecosystem. We use up resources wantonly. Animals within ecosystems know better. It is always win win even when culling a species of the old and young, well, that is a win win as well. I am an embarrassed human of my own dang species. Ravens and all the other wild life completely humble me. Oh, not to forget plant life! Did you know that we share 99%? DNA with all life? Including plants? Not identical but even if we animals shared 20 % DNA with plants and other life forms that means DNA was first. Think about that. And pahleese, leave the magic wand of some God out of this! I am talking to everyone, not you Crue! Grins! I just experienced one of the greatest honors; a Great Gathering of ravens this morning...30 or 40 ravens. We throw our scraps out on a stump and all that food waste is completely utilized! I think our 'couple' shared their 'territory' with others when we cleaned out our chip cupboard this morning. I love these birds...

Thank you, a proper old fashioned nature documentary, no pump and circumstance and hurrying, hurray ;) In Holland we've got grey geese also, we call them wild geese. They forage in fields of remote nature reserves, with water close. Every end of summer I watch large V formations flying over. With the sound that makes me feel slightly melancholic, wanting to join the geese in their flight to new horizons and feeding grounds. During the procession, I smiled when I saw the cows watching it, curious as always. And lastly, I do wonder why the wolves and geese are fed, shouldn't they be left to their own natural way of life?

Why does the narrator call those birds of prey "buzzards"? They looked like hawks to me. Anyway, here in northwestern Pennsylvania on the shores of the Great Lake Erie, we have buzzards - turkey buzzards we call them - and they're one of the biggest birds in the Americas, and second only to the Andean condor I believe. With a 6 to 8 foot wingspan and a face only a mother could love, these birds have a strange and grisly history up here this far north. As the story goes, these birds, which roost only about 10 miles or so from here, migrated from the south following battles of the American civil war and the trail of dead horses they left behind as far north as Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. They then headed up into northwestern Pennsylvania, southwestern New York, and beyond. In fact, I've hiked to where they roost and that's actually in New York state. One evening, in 2014 I believe, while visiting my ex-wife and our four kids who lived near the lake shore, I looked up and noticed what I'm sure had to be our entire population of turkey buzzards, about 50 or so, all roosting in the top of a single tree right next to their house. They appeared as huge and ominous shadows, lurking silently over us at dusk, peering down at us and clicking their beaks. It creeped everyone out - but me since I thought it was cool - but then again, I am a long-time bird lover... Update: (As a murder of crows caw away near me...), while researching the info for this comment, I discovered that some people I guess do actually call hawks "buzzards" which is a bit disconcerting since birds of prey are beautiful, while buzzards, a.k.a. vultures, aren't so much so...

Major grins, Susan! Think about a world of people without MONEY. Just bartering services. Have you ever watched the 'Venus Project' and/or 'Zeitgeist...Addendum'? That is the second documentary by Peter Joseph. Money is not healthy for human mentality. Interesting idea, no money. I had to chew on that for months until I was able to understand that no money for exchange would be brilliant. Change that extreme? Not happening any time soon! Money rules everything including morality.

When Mary Magdalene started the church With women until Peter came much later to a established church overtake it and banned women. Is when they turned away from Jesus. Ugly ugly untold ugliness. Killing off all learned men of all science s And architect s etc they named masons later illuminate (bringers of light) Or light of knowledge . They feared loss of control if people were educated. A Raven is the average intelligent fast thinking bird with additional attention span and objective permanence. They're relatable because they're on the same positive feedback loop that humans adopted not that long ago. If they're able to keep that x4 more efficient bird brain fully fueled and cool enough all year round they're able to use that food stashing LiDAR instant memory to also amass a lot of self taught knowledge very quickly compared to a more robust slower human. Every wild or pet bird I've checked has understood a mutually exclusive choice between food now or better food after a tolerable wait. The variable is obviously waiting time and potion sizes with the predictable spread across bird species of what individual birds found a good deal or something to complain about. A good test of animals smarts I've found most applicable is how fast a creature I'd able to overcome a strong reaction or modify core behaviours to better exploit a new beneficial opportunity.

Nature documentaries are my favorite genre. This one about ravens was quite pleasant, with some nice poetic touches, but a bit boring. Unlike the author's claim, I did NOT feel that "this documentary probe[d] deep into the raven's soul." Specifically, it did not probe too deep into the bird's well--researched keen intelligence. I believe that Conrad Lorentz, one of my favorite ethologists, might have been somewhat disappointed, too.
