I once actually witnessed a red ant colony raiding a black ant colony. The black ants were a lot smaller and completely defenceless. They didn't even try to fight, just quickly evacuating and escaping with their brood. It was terrifying but really cool to watch. I just felt bad for the small ants. :')

It's so interesting how an animal like the ant is individually entirely unimpressive. Both in terms of physical capabilities and intelligence they are not special or are even inferior to so many other animals. But then as a group they stand out so much in that they are the closest to humans in terms of organization. Offensive and defensive war tactics, agriculture, building large structures to live in, etc. Despite being so far away from us biologically, they are the only animals that share those things with us. Close relatives like Bees are similar of course.

An interesting thing is; termites, an ant/bee like social insect that has no connection with them (they're a relative of cockroaches which is weirder), is actually better builders than ants. Many of them builds incredible towers made out of dirt to live in millions. I kind of fascinated by them.

Some scientists refer to insect colonies as a "super organism" i.e. a being made of individual animals rather than individual cells. In that case, they are not so close after all

One of my favorite thing I learned about ants is that some release a pheromone for other ants to follow and then those ants release a pheromone for more ants to follow. Sometimes the ants will walk in circles following each other until they die.

I remember reading that when the Spanish started colonizing the Americas, they would encounter some very aggressive species of ants that would crawl into their beds and attack when they were trying to sleep. They had to put the bedposts in buckets of water so that the ants were prevented from crawling into the beds at night.

I love this Ant series and furthers my distaste of the "we are just ants to aliens why would they come here" argument. The way i see it curiosity is the foundation to intelligence and if there are sophisticated alien species out there they would absolutely want to learn about us. I can just picture an alien watching a Kurgesagt video about the "Humans on the Planet Called Earth."
