I got to meet Zack as an extra in Detroit for Batman V Superman. The extras were stuck on set until late into the evening even though our scenes were done. I was a huge comic book and movie kid who was just stoked to be there. Well as a result of me talking to every person I could find to learn more about what they do, word got to Zack about some enthusiastic kid in the extras area. Suddenly during a break between shots someone taps me on the shoulder and when I turned around he was standing there to say hello. Zack spent the next 20 minutes or so just talking to me about anything: superheroes, movies, my college he was just filming at, etc. He saw I had a deck of cards and asked if I knew and magic tricks. I managed to pull one off that worked accidentally even better than intended and he seemed impressed. He was extremely nice and cool the entire time. Honestly he took time out of his busy schedule totally unrequested to talk to a nobody. It may have been no big deal to him but it meant the world to me. I will watch every movie he makes forever. I may not feel the need to argue their quality, but I will always step into any online discussions that attack him as a person. He really is a standup guy.

Yeah, I think he mostly figured out what Snyder's all about. Justice League was the best of his DC movies, because the Arthurian Legends actually works pretty well with what we want from a Justice League movie. There's a scene in Book 7 of the Ga'Hoole books, where Nyra asks this one smith if he could make it so her battle talons have coals on the tips. The smith responds that you COULD, but it's a terrible idea -- she won't be able to walk or hunt normally, they'd make stealth missions impossible, and regular use will permanently scar her. Nyra's response is, basically "Yeah, but it'd be totally badass, so I want them" I feel like there's a strong Snyder element there.

what I'm getting out of this is basically what me and my friend concluded fairly recently: he should have a big writer guy do the big writer guy stuff and probably make a rough animatic/storyboard so then he could focus on making pretty looking stuff on set, him being a great people person makes him a fun guy to work with (if we believe the anecdotes from cast and crew) but perhaps he could REALLY benefit from partnering up with a specialist who can cover his weak points

Nah, I think a studio should be booking him to oversee all their projects, and work out 4-8 shots in the movie to Snyderize for the trailer. Because that's what his movies seem like to me. But it doesn't work as well when it's wall to wall - but probably every movie/marketing campaign could benefit from having a few shots of his in them.

He literally worked with an Academy Award-winning screenwriter for BVS and Justice League (Chris Terrio.) As the essay points out, he can make a direct adaptation of some of the best stuff on the planet (Watchmen) and his heavy handed approach will still deaden whatever grace or nuance may have been there. Zack Snyder is a masterclass of "visual" storytelling. I always champion him as style incarnate. But sometimes his scenes overstay their welcome. They can come off awkward because he's trying to make you feel what he does with these characters being modern gods. He also has it bad with eagerly wanting to adapt certain things that he finds cool without the proper build-up to them. I think the missing component with his pictures is a good writer. Someone who sees his vision but aren't hesitant to reel him in when it comes to compromising badass action over a good story. He just needs a healthy balance of both.
@nickasaro8789
@nickasaro8789 Рік тому
You’re right on the money about not having the proper buildup to adapt certain things. Like Death Of Superman should have been the third Superman solo movie in the DCEU at least and it should have an entire movie to itself, not shoved in the last 30 minutes of another one.

That's why I think Justice League is his best film. Chris Terrio won an Oscar for a screenplay, he's no dummy. That's the one DC film that Terrio worked on from the ground up. BvS was already laid out from a script David Goyer wrote BEFORE Terrio even started with Snyder. JL is the best example of letting the characters lead the way, especially Cyborg and Flash and Batman and we feel like we're along for the ride with them more than any of his other movies.

I find his films akin to those oversized sumptuous coffee table books; it’s not for me but I can see why others enjoy them. I met Zack Snyder when I interviewed him when he was shooting Dawn of the Dead, and the minute I started talking to him I had instantly liked the guy, I don't know what it was but I have said he is the coolest cat on the planet. So down to earth so humble and really has a passion for film. We talked for about 20-30 minutes about the remake, but also met up at the world premiere and we discussed the finished product which I was and still am on the fence about.... but I will never forget meeting the guy and having a huge respect for him because he wasn't full of himself, he just wants to make a movie and bring it to the masses. Of his DC films I like Man of Steel, not a fan of BvS, but did enjoy his cut of Justice League... 300 I enjoy, but think he over uses slow motion, the rest of his filmography is meh in my book but I will still sit down and give it a watch because there is something about his visual style that makes even the most meh movie still watchable, plus I can't find anything bad about the guy so I generally want to see him succeed and he has to a level where he is his own genre... Amazing when you think about it. PLus meeting him on Dawn and then getting to work as a zombie on Romero's Land of the Dead as well led me to do my own low budget zombie films and I don't think I would have done it had I not met Zack.

At 42:20 you make a point about Snyder inadvertently copying Schumacher’s Batman & Robin in Watchmen. I just wanted to add that Snyder has stated a few times in interviews that when trying to adapt Watchmen to film, he wanted to try and meld the commentary towards Comic book films of the era instead of comics themselves. He directly mentioned Schumacher’s films as some of the films he was commenting on or parodying, which he noted in Ozymandias’s costume in the film. So your comparison could be a very intentional one as that was essentially the thesis of his adaptation.

I love Snyder, and I honestly agree with most of what you said. But I have to say one thing, I think a few of his movies are as “deep and layered” as some people make out they are. But that isn’t a result of Snyder, and more a result of which writers he pairs himself with. Snyder is someone with such a strong, overwhelming visual style, that when paired with the right team he can create a masterpiece. But if he chooses the wrong material or creatives to surround himself with, his intense style can sometimes muddy instead of elevate the material. Anyway I’m pumped to see how Rebel Moon turns out, I’ve always thought that Snyder would make a killer Star Wars film.

I think the special thing about his work isn't whether completely original, or thought out, or if it's a faithful adaptation, it's the passion behind it. The way he talks about making his movies, you see he doesn't care about what people think about it, he has a vision, and he's having fun making it. And from what can be seen, he spreads that through the production of the movie. Any behind the scenes footage shows this, the actors and crew have a great time making art. Even afterwards many actors express how wonderful it was, and many of them still stand by his side when it comes to the current situations. Your point about Snyder's use of speed ramping being reminiscent of a video game stood out to me because as you were describing how it creates anticipation and then weight to each strike, I was thinking about how some video games have pauses or moments where the character holds the pose built into the animations. It serves the same purpose as the speed ramping, to create anticipation and add weight, to make each strike feel powerful. I'm pretty sure there's a specific term for these, and I cannot for the life of me remember what it is.

Also, as Sucker Punch is my favorite Zack Snyder film I've always felt he could really use a producer or someone to screen his scripts for him. And I could overlook most of the truly awful framing and takes in the film because I saw someone who truly was trying make a thoughtful movie on some of these topics but was just blindly ignorant to how he was falling so incredibly short. 300 is probably his other movie that works for me only because he took the approach of making it literal propaganda to convince the other Spartans to join the war. One thing Synder did better than anyone for Batman is that it's the only live action Batman that fights and moves like comic Batman (outside of gun usage). It's always been a bit jarring to me when you have a character that is known for being so fast and acrobatic that bullets can't even hit him, but every live action portrayel has the actor in a suit where he can barely move. Chris Nolan and Christian Bale did a superb job as a whole for instance but I'd be hard pressed to really take him seriously if you actually saw him in person, waddling around and using that voice. And this causes a dissonance between this master fighter taking down hoards of thugs who also looks like he's struggling to even throw a punch (I mean, Michael Keaton couldn't even move his neck). But Snyder using his style of green screen, slow motion, and CGI made a Batman that both looks the part and actually moves and feels like someone who can wipe the floor with anyone. Take the actual context and character of Batman out of it (meaning he shouldn't be so brutal) and the warehouse fight scene in BvS is the most Batman fight scene in live action history. While everything else about his Batman was pretty terrible (though I think Batfleck could have been great with better writing), that one aspect I have been praising for years. He really needs to work with someone with more narrative depth skill but he handles the action.

But Synder's Batman not only acknowledges it, but places it front and center on camera often. In the other movies the killing is off hand at most or a "rare" situation. But Snyder specifically wanted a darker and more brutal Batman and made it a focus, trying to imitate the Dark Knight Returns while completely misunderstanding the point of that comic. That's why people were annoyed. Even in the new The Batman, Batman basically kills a ton of people just to get to penguin (personally that bothered me a lot bc it was clear the cars weren't empty), but people forgive it bc the movie doesn't acknowledge it and Batman isn't fetishizing it.

Stick with me here. Battle Tendency features: -A cast of larger-than-life, nigh mythological seeming protagonists with special super powers who fuck and kill people all over the place -Is drawn in such a way that everyone is striking cool/sexy poses at all times -Has the heroes contend with a horde of faceless, evil vampires -Features a cast of villains who are buff, perpetually shirtless men who explode people in needlessly gory ways -Has multiple heroes who are heroically struck down in the heat of battle -Runs entirely on everything looking really cool, dramatic and action-packed, regardless of if that actually makes sense from a narrative or practical perspective.

I'm at the section talking about Man of Steel's Superman causing so much destruction in populated areas while fighting Zod and I immediately thought of DragonBall Z; Goku going out of his way to fight the bad guys in the middle of no where, away from people. I know it probably had at least something to do with animation constraints (like it's easier to animate desolate areas/mountains and whatnot being destroyed, etc.) but there were plenty of times the bad guys would wantonly murder and destroy, only to have Goku and the other Z-Fighters actively draw them away from cities to protect civilians. The backdrop didn't necessarily have to be exciting when the fights themselves turned whole mountains into dust. I'm not saying those fight scenes were perfect (or even better), but it was a conscious choice to have Goku and the others prioritize innocent people - because it says a lot about character.

I kind of disagree though the problem is alot of the time his style leaves alot on the viewer to interpret what he's trying to say. I don't think the slow mo in watchmen goes against what the movie is saying and the ironic thing is that Patrick brings up batman and Robin either ignoring or not realizing that snyder specifically made the suits in the movie to look like the suits from that because his watchmen was more commentary on comicbook movies at the time rather than comicbooks. But I think 2 things can be true I think snyder sometimes does use slow mo stylistically because well it's his style but he's not using it to mean what people think he means and are putting too much weight in the fact that he chose to use slowmo. Like the fact is snyder uses slow mo so much that it loses its significance as cinematic language that he's not actually saying anything with it specifically. That's not to say that his movies aren't saying anything but I'm saying people put too much weight in the slow motion specifically. Watching watchmen I never ever get the sense these are people that the movie wants us to cheer for but for whatever reason if you put someone in slow motion some people automatically just go to the director is trying to tell us this guy is cool and awesome while I just see it as snyder using his style to present an image in motion. Very few times does snyder use slow mo in terms of a story telling crutch.

Sucker Punch is my guilty pleasure movie. Legend of the Guardians came to the cinemas when I was at the age when you think that you are too old for an animated movie but to young for movies like 300. I was so surprised how cool and different it was to anything I have seen at the moment. I love Snyder Cut and Army of the Thieves not because I think there is some secret poethic message underneath all the slow mo. I like it because of the goofiness. Army of the Thieves has zombies that are secretly connected to the aliens, the zombies have their own society and can breed. HOW CRAZY IT IS? Snyder can make dumb things epic and that is the main reason why I love his work. It is not perfect but it is crazily unique and has one of my favorite action sequences. And maybe the reason why I love them is because I play videogames and as you said it, it kinda looks like a QTE. I can't wait for Snyder's sci-fi movie because I think that it will finally be his version of Excalibur. And I think there is a place for that type of movie. He needs somebody to calm him down when he slows everything or is trying to do some changes like in Watchmen. But in his own movie? Just make it weird, wonderful to look at, and over the top. But the question was, “why do some scenes in Snyder’s movies captivate me, while others, and more generally the movie, do not?” But this video answers that pretty well I think. Also, I was one of the few people on earth to watch Suckerpunch in theaters and I left the movie feeling pretty cold even though a lot of the scenes seemed cool. But I couldn’t make sense of my feelings at the time, so I just told myself “it was alright” without understanding why I didn’t love it (or hate it)

Awesome video as always! I'm so glad you utilized Guardians as I'm one of the six people who saw this film in the theaters and loved it! Mostly because I love owls in general and I've been obsessed with realistic CGI animation's progression. I have fond memories of the Final Fantasy film even though it had a pretty meh story and had nothing to do with the video game franchise (I never played it, but my ex roommate was highly annoyed by this change).

its wild to read all the comments about how people personally remember their experiences watching the movies and not comment about the subject matter at all

SNyder wasn't the screenwriter for Gahoole. It's an aspect you should have mentioned. Directors aren't the exclusive storytellers of a movie.

Snyder doesn’t write the scripts for most of his movies actually

This video was awesome. The new aesthetics and the updated narrative are great. This new season is up to a great start. The nebula version is also great !
