In 1981 a Canadian WWII vet told me his war story ; enlisting 3 Sept. 1939, narrowly avoiding capture during the Dieppe Raid . (Years later he'd heard a rumour that they were there to grab an Enigma machine), Juno Beach on D Day, the Scheldt- calling in Hawker Typhoons to eliminate stubborn SS resistance, taking prisoners, interrogating them while they all smoked together then moving out leaving them with a Montrealer called 'the Butcher'. 20 minutes later 'the Butcher' caught them up sans prisonniers. I was an arrogant young man in those days and asked if it was all worth it. He thought for a minute then replied "Fuck, no. We were used. " He elaborated that, "War is a horizontal struggle between peoples but life is a vertical struggle against authority." He concluded with, "Authority is your enemy, the government is your real enemy, not some Kraut in the HKL. Authority starts wars. If we'd paid more attention in the 30's maybe we could have avoided war".
