The Three Body Problem Broke My Brain - Remembrance of Earth's Past Trilogy (No Spoilers)
#scifi #3BP #threebodyproblem
The Three Body Problem and the entire trilogy of Remembrance of Earth's Past is my new favorite sci-fi of all time. The Three Body Problem and the entire trilogy of Remembrance of Earth's Past explores our past, present and future as it pertains to our place in a universe where we are NOT alone. The Three Body Problem and the entire trilogy of Remembrance of Earth's Past questions many of our own beliefs, philosophical ideas and known scientific theories. The Three Body Problem and the entire trilogy of Remembrance of Earth's Past has to be one of the most idea packed series I've ever read. The Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy is made up of The Three Body Problem, The Dark Forest, and Death's End.
Also Three Body Problem is being adapted into a Netflix series and is already adapted for a season in China. You can find more information about that here on UKposts.
I now have a Patreon that has some cool benefits, including access to my discord server! This is 100% optional and thank everyone for their support!

@@thefantasynuttworkyou'll need a translation. The author Liu said in a interview, he is pleased the Chinese TV version because the story line was true to his book but that's only made just on the first book of this trilogy, he's not sure if the Chinese production going to make the other two since netflix already brought the right from him for the foreign version which he has very little involvement. But he also said from what he knows the eng version made the characters more international but he doesn't mind as long they are true to the main core, that's what I heard from him in a interview!

8:57 I don't mind that the characters aren't fleshed-out more - I've read a lot of Asimov's stories and it's the same thing with him. Characters are put there to advance the story, not because they are interesting in their own right.

Since you mentioned good quotes, my most favourite quote of the series is from the second-last chapter, "The ultimate fate of all intelligent beings has always been to become as grand as their thoughts." Truly a profound, beautiful, and moving statement. Encapsulates my own views on the universe and reality really well.

Yes I felt my sense of reality expand. My favorite quote from the Three Body Problem, "The bright lights of the city penetrated the translucent walls of the immense glass building and dimly revealed its internal structure. Wang thought that if the architect had intended to express a feeling about the universe, the design was a success: The more transparent something as, the more mysterious it seemed. The universe itself was transparent, as long as you were sufficiently sharp-eyed, you could see as far as you liked. But the farther you looked, the more mysterious it became."

I just finished Three-body this week and as a physicist I have to say that it was a romp. I had a great time even while it creeped me out. You are not wrong when you were talking about first contact. For the foreseeable future we should be doing our best to, essentially, hide. Blurting out our presence into the universe at large is not in our best interest. At least that’s how I see it.

Some times I still think about the dark forest concept and I wonder if that the search for alien life it's worth it, haha. I love your reviews! This is one of those series that both intrigues and terrifies me. I am generally more of a character-focused reader, but then I can also really appreciate it when stories get more philosophical/experimental. Also, I know that Ken Liu is the translator, so it's kinda interesting to hear that the prose isn't anything to write home about, since Liu's own prose is some of the best out there (in my opinion). I wonder how hard it is to stay true to the original text and to not insert a bit of your own style into the translation. In any case, it seems like he succeeded at that pretty well here! Anyway, it sounds like this series is one that will stick with you for a while, whether you like it or not. I am going to keep it on my radar! I was hoping you would like it. Your video really explains all that's great about it, and the things people might get annoyed by in the books. Great video, as always. This is a FANTASTIC series. Just a series that doesn't leave you the same at the end. The series makes you question so much about the word and universe we live in and then it crushes you at times. What an experience this is. And when you said bingeable, absolutely. The third book especially was like that for me. I spent a day reading it, went to sleep and then 2h later I had to get up and finish the book because I just couldn't stop thinking about it. A 5* series for me. oh and the ant scene! Wow, talk about trippy narration! - and now for a recommendation: Terra Ignota by Ada Palmer. What 3BP does with physics and astrophysics, Terra Ignota does with philosophy and political theory. And it's bingeable! Perfection

Regarding what you were saying, about not being impressed by the author's prose, have you considered that something might have got lost in translation? I have heard native Chinese people say that there are a whole host of cultural references that non-Chinese people just won't pick up on. So, give Cixin Liu the benefit of the doubt, here! I was amazed that one person could come up with so many astonishing ideas and make such a compelling story involving them.

Two questions for you. Have you heard of the UKpostsr Isaac Arthur? He is a large channel who focuses on the science within science fiction, usually without getting into the calculus and more so the qualitative possibilities that technological advancement could entail. His range goes from near future (say what could be achieved within 100 years) to Kardashev 3 level topics. He also talks about my next main question. What did you think about the Fermi paradox, both pre and post reading this series if you can specify? More specifically, why do you think we haven't interacted with aliens (Assuming scientists at Area 51 aren't hiding the truth)? I personally believe that intelligent civilisations have a hard cap on what could be achieved, largely due to organisational difficulties and or expending resources too quickly to advance to a higher techno-organisational stage. Within this standard exists a species nuking itself to a different era, then not having enough resources to become a properly interstellar civilisation. I think humanity will, as a best case scenario, remain interplanetary. Worse case scenario, one of the numerous cases of close nuclear exchanges we keep having goes hot, keeping humanity stuck to Earth in fairly small and harsh communities.
@thefantasynuttwork
@thefantasynuttwork Рік тому
I pretty much have the same feelings as you. I think also as humans we are fascinated and obsessed with the thought of alien life, but who is to say another intelligent species would be? Great series, for those of you don't know, Liu took a lot of inspirations from the various dynasty of Chinese history, China as a civilization is the longest continuous civilizatoin of all human civilization, not that there aren't olders ones than China (Egyptian, Mesopotamia etc but none of them survived), but Chinese civilization is the only one that survived continuously, the current Chinese writing can be directly tracked back 5000 year ago on turtle bone carvings. If you time travel a Chinese person today to few thousands years ago, he or she would have little problem communicating with the people there. It also relly helps that Chinese are obsessed about history that means most of what happened are actually well recorded. In those writings, one can witnesses the rise and fall of powerful dynasties, the golden age of civilization and its ruin and destruction etc, epic rulers that made a real difference and bad rulers that piss it all away, power struggle and political intrigue. And all of this were continuously repeated over and over again, this must says something about human nature. I feel like a lot of themes like that are similarly explored in the books, this is why this series feels so different, it tries to incorporate so much ideas from Chinese history and combined it with sifi. And I did have essential crisis for a while after reading this series, and I also feel like the last book was way too rushed, each ideas in the book can easily be a series on its own.

I got about half way through it before I had to let it go when it started to undercut my memories of the series. Nothing is safe in book 4. There’s so much retconning that almost every aspect of the other books is connected and happily resolved in an almost magical way. The uncertainty and lack of reasons for some characters’ actions are all given retroactive motivations that serve some larger 4D chess concept that looks like a crazy photos-connected-with-red-yarn conspiracy. Leave it at Death’s End and walk away.

4:27 I’m glad you said that because that’s me in a nutshell. I really do like sci-fi and fantasy thematically, but the writing generally isn’t of a quality that I find satisfactory. And it’s not that I think the writing is bad per se, it’s just that it’s usually written at about a YA level which, again, is OK but leaves me unsatisfied. And I know that for a lot of people such a sentiment comes off as elitist and I really don’t mean for it to be. I don’t thumb my nose at it or people who enjoy it, it’s just not for me. And I really do strive to find sci-fi and fantasy that does achieve that standard of writing that I like because there is some out there and I was hoping this series would be among those, but by your comments here and ones I have heard on another video, it seems to not be the case.
@user-yp6yr9te7l
@user-yp6yr9te7l Місяць тому
I don't think such a comment is elitist, rather, I feel that is inaccurate. Most great science fiction is not at a YA level. It is more accurately to say that it is stylistically different from other fictional literature. I wouldn't classify anything by Arthur C. Clarke, Robert Heinlein, James SA Corey to be YA, or George RR Martin to be YA or Frank Herbert to be YA, at all. Things like Dune trumps many other literature. It is just that it's not written in the styles employed by other literature. The goal of speculative fiction is different from literary fiction. The beauty is in the ideas for scifi, and in the mythos for fantasy. You read Fantasy the same way you'd read ancient myths and folklore. It's to inhabit an elevated world. You read scifi for the same reason you'd study the newest peer-reviewed publication on superconductors. It's to explore new possibilities.

Ken Liu was a perfect choice to translate these novels into english, because he's such a strong english language writer already. That said, I didn't not find 3Body an enjoyable series to read. I found it depressing, it amplified my already overwhelming pessimism about humanity and our potential compared to our performance as a species. Also, i had a really hard time keeping track of who was who because there are so damn many of them.

Some of my thoughts on "Death's End": 1. You need to have read the previous books to understand this book. There is no summary or reminder in the book. Many characters and situations from the previous books are mentioned without any explanation. In my opinion that is a flaw that could be easily corrected with a few paragraphs of explananation. I read the first 2 books a few months ago, but I don't remember the details. 2. It is difficult to believe that the swordholder would be a single person. It is much more plausible that many leaders, presidents or prime-ministers of the world would all be swordholders and be able to press the button. And the deterrence weapon would only be activated if all, or at least a majority of the swordholders pressed the button. Putting the fate of the entire human race on a single person is too inplausible. 3. Many elements of the book are based on real science. It is difficult to know which elements are from the author, and which elements are from other authors or scientists. I wished there was an a bibliography with all the sources. 4. There is no mention of a Noah's Ark, at least in this book. Maybe there is in the previous books? I don't remember. If humanity were doomed to extinction, it is quite probable they would try to build and launch spaceships that worked as Noah's Ark. Such spaceship should have libraries with most human knowledge, and frozen embryos and seeds of most animals and vegetables, including several human embryos. The purpose would be that hopefully an advanced civilization would intercept and be able to revive the embryos, so humanity could survive and rebuild somewhere in the Cosmos. A more advanced Noah's Ark would have artificial incubators able to develop and give birth to the human embryos, and robot nannies able to take care, raise and educate the babies. An even more advanced Noah's Ark would have human adults in hibernation. A Noah's Ark is not that difficult to build and it is feasible, at least in its simplest form, with today's technology. Many arks can be built and launched and if at least one of them succeeds, then the human civilization could still exist and thrive somewhere in the galaxy. 5. If an alien civilization were to try to conquer the Earth, would they even bother to talk to humans? Do humans bother to talk to ants that might be living on a property where humans want to build a new house? Humans just build the house and kill any ants that stand in the way. Just like ants are completely ignored by humans, an alien civilization would just ignore humans and just kill any human that stood in the way. So to survive all you have to do is not to stand in the way of the aliens. The only problem is that aliens could want to occupy the entire planet, and possibly there would be nowhere to go to survive, except maybe outer space. And humans fleeing Earth would probably be completely ignored by the aliens. 6. Could you sacrifice your loved ones to accomplish a goal? Soldiers are supposed to sacrifice their own lives in order a accomplish a mission. But could they sacrifice the lives of their family and friends, in order to accomplish a greater goal, for example to save the country? The lives of the many are more important than the lives of the few? Even though that is not the focus of the book, I think it is one of the most interesting points in the book, particularly embodied in the character of Thomas Wade. He seems to be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish a goal. Does the end justify the means? Would you kill millions to save billions? You are dammed if you do, you are dammed if you don't. In order to save humanity you need to lose your own humanity. In order to save, you need to kill. In order to have peace you need to go to war. In order to survive you need to kill yourself. What is the point of saving humanity if you need to become cold, cruel and inhumane? There in no humanity left to be saved. At this point everything becomes paradoxical and meaningless. In order to save humanity Thomas Wade decides to disobey orders, to commit crimes, to kill people. That is the conflict between Thomas Wade and Cheng Xin. That seems to be an almost impossible, unsolvable moral dilemma.

I wish Cixin Liu would read Heinlein's "The number of the Beast." At the end, there is a gathering of many of his fictional beings and in one paragraph, there are listed various universes by different sci fi writers. He writes about fictional universes, " We would be in any world that takes our universe as a model but far enough from the sun so that it appears as second or third magnitude. That wouldn't have to be far; our sun is pretty faint. So this would be our Darkover Universe, or Niven's known space or Dr. Williamson's Legion of Space Universe, or the Star Trek universe or Anderson's world of the Paleosontechnic League, or Dr. Smith's Galactic Galactic Patrol world or several more." Amazing to have listed all these fictional universes into one paragraph and have our minds expand to include them all.

Science fiction is usually more about the ideas whereas fantasy is more about the characters. There are relatively few hard sf books with very in depth characterization, but you pretty much have to accept that as a matter of course. But if you liked this, I'd recommend Robert L Forward (Dragon's Egg perhaps) and Charles Sheffield as two good hard sf writers. David Brin as well. You can't go far wrong with sci fi written by physicists. I have yet to read this trilogy, but it's definitely on my tbr.

The ending became more of a question, I was hoping they'd explore more of the collapsed dimension, it's likely to be in one dimension by then before it can collapse into 0. As im reading the first of these three books i keep thinking about a funny conversation i had with a chinese friend as we were standing in line waiting to see the movie crouching Tiger. She joked that the heros or lovers will die at the end of the movie. I said: why? Did you see this movie already? She said no. But they always die at the end of the movie. I said: I heard it was a love story. She said: it is, that’s why they die at the end. So while reading the three body problem, I thought it had great ideas, wonderful imagination, a different way of see our place in the universe but the relationships were cold and impersonal. That some things may had been lost in translation. It will give you lectures before anything would happen. You will not find any characters to cling to, or to have sympathy for. But the incredible imagination had me glued to the story. No simple storyline of good versus evil bad against good. The world and our existence are a lot more complex than that. this book captures that. It is a mature book with mature ideas and I would hope other sci-fi authors break away from their traditional narrative and storytelling and try something different, like the Three Body Problem author did.

I haven't read the books but have just finished watching the 30 episode series. It got pretty draggy in many places but the thinking underneath the writing was fascinating enough to hold me in there. Two things in the books that you referred to are the clipped style of English translation and the relationships between characters. I have no idea of how nuanced Chinese conversation is but listening to the Chinese speech patterns it constantly sounded abrupt and combative. Pair that with the poor quality English subtitles and I often wondered if constant interpersonal confrontation is what the author intended or if there was no effort to make the overall production cross the culture barrier. You also mention ants in your review, another thing I found strange. There are lone ants or lines of ants walking across windows and mirrors in many places but I got no sense of what imagery they were suggesting. OK, the aliens called humans 'bugs' in a late episode of the series, but I was left feeling that the ants might have gotten some explanation in the book but not in the tv show. I'm Australian and still can't figure out why they had an Aussie with a very broad accent playing the US Colonel. That was very weird. The only thing I can come up with was that it was political censorship, they didn't want to have the American accent featured in such a prominent role among the good guys. There were several instances of obvious censorship in the series, such as blurring out Western tee-shirts and words missing from the middle of sentences in the subtitles.
@Ambrose136
@Ambrose136 Рік тому
I highly recommend you to read the English version books which were interpreted by a Chinese English native speaker who can cross through the cultural barriers perfectly. The understanding in terms of accent is very smart. Yes, due to the ideology between China and the US, they avoid intentionally the censorship from China film and tv bureau and focus on the quality of telling the story.😊

As the actor who played Mike Evans said, he got the chance to play the role because he stayed in China back in March 2020 when the shooting begin. Also because of the pandemic, they can't go on location in Panama, instead spent months searching the rivers in China. So if they got a bigger budget, or begun shooting earlier or much later, maybe an actual American will have played the colonel.

I've read the trilogy a few years ago but now I'm curious about the English translation; noticed that a lot of English speakers describe the writing as "dry" or "short and sharp" - which is different from my experience with it. (To be fair - I didn't read it in Chinise, so comparing one translation to another still says little about the original). This is highly subjective but I feel like even though the story explores terrifying and cruel side of existence it actually made me see life in a more positive way. This series was thought provoking but in the end, after thinking about the concepts presented it looked less and less possible. That's both the physics side and the dark forest concept in the real world. Many properties of the laws of physics emerge from properties of space-time. Changing the number of dimensions above 3 rewrites the laws in a way to prevent existence of any stable multi-particle system. Changing speed of light immediately changes space permittivity and slowing it down will immediately cause all electrons to be ejected from all atoms while the nuclei themselves will become radioactive in order to reach the new minimal energy state. Even the dark forest concept has significant holes in it. You can't hide in real space and even we are close to detect bio-signatures on other planets. A dark forest mentality necessitates destruction of every planet with life on it and thus earth should have been attacked 2.4 billion years ago. Secondly, launching a dark forest strike is detectable and paints a target on the perpetrator similar to a country launching a nuke. In the hunter analogy the victim might expose himself to the hunters but the first hunter to shoot also exposes himself so it's better not to shoot.

Forget the physics. The sociological/psychological aspects to this series are hilarious. Its hard to feel dread or horror if the scifi aliens... dont do anything. "Your all bugs" was supposed to fill me dread but it was just funny. Sophons can do... anything but instead they just try subtlety and minor tiny changes to individual to get them to kill themselves. For real. Pretend your god, create a religion that literally everyone on the planet can be shown visions to reinforce its legitimate. Then the farcical wall facers lmao. Aliens recruit humans to humilate them, instead of rerouting an airplane ontop of their heads.

I found the only "big" blemish to be the end of the first book. The POV being taken to that other place. The author took such care to paint foreign things very foreign, so that part, with casually throwing our figures of speech, in the mix felt a bit like an afterthought. Like there was a need to quickly confirm still that we're really dealing with something alien. I think it was almost sloppy, when seeing how well similar matters are handled in the latter books. It didn't ruin anything for me now as I could continue straight to the next part, but might have really bothered me if I read these as they came out.
