Historically speaking most battle axes didn't have two heads. In fact, almost none did. It's a common fantasy trope but most two headed battle axes were purely ceremonial, and even then rare.

@@bamaboi8814 Note that I'm talking about battle axes specifically. Two headed woodcutting axes did exist, although I wouldn't call them exactly common either. Perhaps I should've specified double bidded battle axes, since it was actually pretty common to have a hammer or a spike on the other side. If you can point me to a source that proves that double bidded axes were used on the battlefields, then please inform me. I'm always willing to correct myself.

@@tatererer9747 It was simply unnecessary. A hardy axe can take quite a beating before being unsuitable for combat, and if it did you could most likely get a new one from a fallen friend or foe. There also aren't many axe techniques that would favor a double bidded axe, so it is more useful to have a different head like a spike or a hammer instead of another blade. Another thing is that they would be less durable compared to a single headed axe with similar mass because it would have to be thinner/have less cutting surface to compensate so the two heads would most likely wear almost as quickly as the one thicker blade. Additionally, if the shaft breaks, you'll be wasting two heads instead of just one. It's also easier to tell which side is sharp if the axe only has one blade =P

for some reason i felt that the axe was more of a hammer in the first few attempts and then was sharper in cutting the pumpkins and wood, i really liked ho clean it cut through that, other than that, this build was absolutely amazing! and i love that there was blacksmithing in this! I love the art of blacksmithing!

You can see it throughout the testing portion of the video that they're struggling with edge alignment when swinging the axe. This is because the handle is uniform. That's honestly the only thing that I would seriously criticize about the axe. Just saying though, it's not battle ready

Also I'd say that Axe's edges were set up for failure from the start. If they wanted it to be realistically functional the axe head should've been one piece, not 3 pieces with separate edges. Cool display piece I guess.

@@Rockykill3r357 It's based off the design of Viking bearded axes, which were made of iron for most of the axe, and steel only at the blade part, since steel was extremely difficult to obtain. It's only in relatively modern times that metallurgy has advanced far enough that we can afford to make the whole axe head out of steel. Even today, we don't use the highest grades of steel everywhere, because it's just too expensive. They just didn't successfully forge-weld the tool steel onto the mild steel, since if they did, the metal would fracture before the two grades of steel came apart.

Interesting info, its cool that they tried a historically accurate forging technique then. Guessing that the durability difference between welded edge to non welded edge is decently sized.

@@Rockykill3r357 You can tell by the way that the tool steel fell off that it just didn't weld. I suspect either there was oxidation on the inside, or there was too much flux between the two surfaces, or they didn't hammer it enough at a high enough temperature.

A note about your ax swinging technique: start the swing with your hands far apart, dominant hand near the ax head, other hand near the base, and during your swing as the ax is reaching the apex of its arc, slide your top hand down the haft towards your other hand. Let the ax do the work.

That edge looked pretty messed up at the end😂. As a Forged In Fire fan i really missed the heat treat/oil quench for those edges. Was it cut out or not done? Else you are kept with pretty mild steel right? Btw not an expert in any shape or form🤷🏻‍♂️

This was a great video, but I would just like to say that 2 blades doesn’t make a battle axe. Actually most battle axes didn’t have 2 blades. The difference between a wood axe and a battle axe is actually the thickness. A wood axe is very thick for repeatedly splitting very hard material. A battle axe is surprisingly thin for mobility and for cutting through, you know, human easier.

It was called Narsil (red-and-white flame), then it broke, then when Aragorn had it reforged it was called Anduril, which means Flame of the West.

In my opinion, I think it would be a good idea to do more projects like this, forging your own weapons while using a little bit of what you're used to, just so that you can learn a new skill and make more awesome content and have more fun

I need your advise i want a 3d printer but i dont know the ratios measurements or proportions to create a desired print so my question is this is there a way that a voice command could be incorporated into a device that controls the printer kinda the way jarvas system does.and maybe design and build a head for the printer that extrude lines that are 1/2 thick and wide like the 3d printers for concrete or for boat printing im in noway tech savvy. It would be cool if there was a projector built into the printer so you could project the size you want onto a wall then the computer takes in the size measurements and wala if noone has done these ideas i want my credit for thinking them up but also help in creating them

Normally I really love this channel and all the work that you do. But I feel like the level of craftsmanship on this build just isn't there with this one. I love Two Smiths and all that they do! I just feel like this one could have been done a little better.

I agree. This one felt a little phoned in. The blacksmithing quality was pretty low if the forge weld could even hold on such a simple project. But hey content is content, they can't all be mini-Tesla trucks and power-loaders. That power-loader project must have taken up a large portion of their human and financial resources.

Nice axe guys, I'm form NZ and I love the LORD OF THE RINGS films. If you where to make a series of LOTR weapons what else would you make? Would it be things like Sauron's Mace? As a matter of fact, the simple fact the edge of the axe flew off during testing means that the forge weld failed. In addition, welding it back on would have destroyed the temper, assuming it was ever hardened and tempered to begin with.
