People treat it like an art already. I think the problem was that rap alienated it’s non black audience. Rap and hip hop have gatekeepers that clown non black participants. Non blacks who cover hip hop and rap are considered culture vultures. Just imagine a skinny white kid listening to NBA youngboy. We automatically think it’s kinda funny. I truly believe that the non black audience got alienated and went to other genres that they feel more comfortable being seen listening to in public. Yes there is definitely a shift, I’m in South Africa and back then we used to consume a lot of American hip hop music but now the masses appreciate more of the home grown music and that has led to a huge decline in the consumption of Hip Hop as a whole. Because there was a period were hip hop was a leading genre in SA until amapiano started now the masses are consuming Amapiano and I think globally more countries are just consuming music that is made locally which has now resulted in a few audience for international hip hop.

That’s silly! First off even many of these other artforms like AfroBeats and Reggaeton do get some of their influences from American rap, R&B and funk music. This notion it was created in a vacuum is 🧢. American artists have toured internationally since the commercial airliners. That’s more 🧢. Fela Kuti who is known as one of the godfathers of AfroBeats, lived in LA for a few years and was a member of a funk band. You think that didn’t effect his musical direction? Fela’s ex-bandmate Sandra Izsadore has interviews talking about this. She discussed how his music sounded when he first arrived to LA. Americans started those autotune vocals back in the 80s with Roger Troutman. Then T-Pain came along in the early 2000s ushering in the new formula, which inspired the next generation of record producers. Same way males in Africa stated wearing skinny jeans, after they became the wave in America. You watch old Nigerian movies from early 2000s, no males were dressing like that Latin artists aren’t making music for everyone. They’re making music for their folks, same for AfroBeats artists. Now that it’s crossing over like rap music did in the early 90s, people want to post their crackpot theories and revisionist history. Rappers weren’t making music to crossover in the early days and those who did, got excoriated for watering down the culture. Once the big money and corporations came into rap/hip hop, the genre started to go downhill, stifle creativity and become a copycat genre. Most of these dudes are rapping with the Migos/Future flow now.

Why tf is WizKid, Burna Boy, Davido and Rema (who has one hit song) still running the game. That's equivalent to Drake, Kendrick and Cole. Thing is we actually do but it is coded in the rythmn, melodies drums.. Omg, drums is the climax of afrobeats. No drums, no vibes. Also years of censorship and control has made artists unconsciously water down their lyrics that even if they are singing about such you just vibe and dance to it still. Also the audience is very diverse and you just have to watch your lyrics. But rarely do they sing about murdering cos the govt don't play about that. However, they sing about light criminal activities depending on how you look at it like scam etc. But again its coded in the rythmn, dance, melodies etc that you end up don't caring about the lyrics.
