The biggest trade that never happened was supposed to extend the Lakers' historic run of dominance into another decade. Instead, Stern’s unprecedented veto forever changed the course of history for three franchises, multiple superstars, and the NBA as we know it.

Quite the opposite. The billion dollar GOAT debate of Bron V Jordan is why Stern wanted to make sure Bron’s Miami team would win several rings. Kobe could never be the goat even if he won 10 rings bc he’s a copy of MJ. Everyone would agree MJ is better because he’s the original no matter what. This was to keep Lebron from losing rings with Miami which he still did 2-2 but yea I get why you thought that.

Not necessarily wanting kobe to not get a 6th. It was to level the playing field but it would hurt Kobe in effect. It looked bad if the NBA itself traded him to the biggest media market team after Lebron left blue collar Cleveland for south beach and Dan Gilbert complained. If NOLA had an actual owner or the Lakers somehow found talent another way there isn't much the NBA could do. LA's best chance of winning anything was to try and make a move in 2010 when all the big signings from Lebron to Boozer were happening.

All the people saying this was to stop Kobe from passing MJ in rings. Wrong. It had everything thing to do with Lebron. Lebron at this point: 1) Recently formed a Big 3 in Miami that was very controversial 2) Just lost embarrassingly in the finals the year prior to the Mavericks where he was getting cooked on offense AND defense by Jason Terry and was still ringless. 3) If this deal plus the Dwight Howard trade also happens (which it would've) then Lebron might've stayed ringless because a Lakers team with Prime Kobe, Paul and Howard coached by Phil Jackson would've been the definition of success. 4) a lot of owners were mad about point 1

Orlando Magic would not have traded Dwight Howard to the Lakers or anyone else until they confirmed that they would be unsuccessful in the July 2012 Free Agent Market and Howard's contract reached 1-year left in July-August 2012. So my Chip & FMVP scenarios still apply for high-mileage, high-risk Kobe in April-May-June 2013.

Seeing how CP3 plays with Book (who, yes I know is a different player than Kobe, but there are some comparisons to be made) is sad we never got to see this. Coming from a Celtics fan, I loved to hate Kobe.....He was a key part of those memories being so special. I hated him as a fan, but as Ive gotten older Ive learned one thing regarding sports, and maybe in life in general. Appreciate what you have. Appreciate it, love it, cherish it. Because one day itll be gone and all youll have are the memories. Memories are happy until the person or people you made them with are gone. Then they become painful reminders of what you used to have, and even worse what you dont have going forward. Theyre great when you know tomorrow youll have an opportunity to make new ones. When you know tomorrow you wont be able to make those memories anymore with that special person or people it stings. I love watching any and all great players. I hate Kyrie, but damn is it special to be able to watch him. I hate the Lakers but all I wanna do is see Lebron cement his legacy more and more. Appreciate what we have. Who knows if and when its gone where well be and how much well miss it.

Silver isn't much better. The officiating is still corrupt and the NBA bends the knee to communist China. Stern's officials were arguably worse and had their betting scandal (That was more than just Tim Donaghy). Trying to change the game up to appease millennials isn't good. The play in tournament is garbage. The regular season is a play in tournament for the playoffs. The playoffs is a play in tournament for the finals. How many of these tournaments do we need? If there is any problem with the playoffs in the NBA it's that they are already too long. It's 5 to 6 weeks from start of the playoffs to the last game of the finals. Cutting the shot clock reset down from 24 seconds on an offensive rebound is also a bad move. They wanted to speed up the game, but all that accomplished was making it sloppier. It takes the offensive team half of their 16 seconds to reset the offense and then they are stuck jacking up a rushed shot. The conversion percentage on offensive rebounds now is around 13 percent. This was supposed to increase scoring, but it's actually had the opposite effect.

That’s the key. Stern was basically the acting owner of the Hornets at the time since they couldn’t find an actual owner. So he didn’t think it was the best for the Hornets (and he was right. It was a shit trade). It’s not like the NBA could have let the Hornets go defunct so someone had to step in. Stern was put in a really bad spot.

With the Phoenix Suns team, seemingly, just talking about or considering trading Chris Paul is considered absurd; yet, when it comes to real pressure being applied against the Suns (especially during play-offs), both Booker & Paul stoop- down and show a combined weakness. Likely, playing together, they will never win a championship. Seemingly, the Suns could use more players having a 'back-bone'.

David Stern loved having big market teams succeed because it would make the NBA the most money and that is why people thought that the first draft lottery was rigged to help the New York Knicks and the NBA make the most money. This is why this veto is strange because La is a big market and CP3 to the Lakers would have made the Lakers more likely to win the Finals and make the NBA the most money. The funny part is that CP3 did end up going to LA, just the wrong LA (Clippers instead of the Lakers 😂).

In the best case the Lakers would have reached another final, facing the Heat. I don't want to say they would have lose extremely, but CP3 started to get injuries after 2011 (also Andrew Bynum) and without Pau i don't think the Lakers would have the chance to beat the Heat. But, maybe with 2 or 3 great additions in the offseason, with Paul staying healthy, nah, maybe a ring i guess.
@pamoon_
@pamoon_ 2 роки тому
I feel like should the Lakers have acquired Chris Paul in 2011, I’m not sure if they would have won a title. They would have made at least 1-2 Finals, but I believe it would have played out like this: 2012: lost in Finals to Miami 2013: lost in WCF to San Antonio 2014: this would have been the best time to win a title but I feel like the Spurs, Heat or Thunder would have made this difficult. Kobe would get his 6th and CP3 would get his 1st 2015: lose in WCSF to Golden State 2016: lose in WCSF to Golden State 2017: lose in WCSF to Golden State 2018: lose in WCSF to Golden State 2019: lose in WCF to Golden State By 2019 (?) Kobe would have retired given with CP3 he wouldn’t bust his achilles due to the wear and tear from the 2012-13 season, to push for a 7th ring. But no one was beating that Golden State team FULLY HEALTHY especially when they had KD.
@Davivd2
@Davivd2 2 роки тому
The Bynum trade for Dwight Howard would have happened. This was already in the works. Part of this deal was to clear cap space for Howard. You can't say that those same injuries would have happened playing in different games, for a different team, with different minutes. The effects on the timeline of everyone's lives would have been altered in some way. I don't think the Laker team would have been in a position to cause Kobe to play against medical advice on a sore ankle and carry 39 year old Steve Trash into the playoffs and tear his achilles if Chris Paul was on the team.

@@Davivd2 fundamentally Steve Nash was not a bad player by any means. He is goofy looking and his teammates must not have respected him with the wife situation plus no chips but he could play at high level. What else do you want from a point guard?
@Davivd2
@Davivd2 Рік тому
@@OnGod1007 Well I don't think that Steve Nash ever meant to actually play for the Lakers. In essence, I think he was there to steal money. Game one on the opener of the season on the very first play against the Portland Trailblazers Steve Nash (allegedly) suffers a hairline fracture on his leg bone, yet manages to play the rest of the half on a fractured leg. It was negotiated with the Lakers before Nash even joined the team that Nash would see his own personal DR and not a team DR. I had that exact same injury on my fore arm. I saw the X ray (allegedly) of Nash's fracture on TV. It looked exactly like mine, and the same distance from the knee joint as mine was from the elbow joint. So we have almost identical injuries with the only difference being one is on the leg and the other is on the arm. Steve Nash played an NBA ball game on this "fracture". Well when it happened to me I knew my arm was broken immediately. I got up and said to my friends; " I broke my arm" they laughed, I said: "No for real" I held up my arm and it dangled below my elbow flopping around like a fish out of water all on it's own and I had zero control over it's movement below my elbow. Steve Nash came back from this injury, played exactly the minimum number of games that a player has to play in order for a team to have to pay him his full years salary even if they decided to declare him an injury hardship and release him. Pretty interesting injury and coincidence so far right? August of that summer, Steve Nash is on ESPN hosting his soccer tournament and his broken leg looks just fine as he's running around playing full on soccer. The game that's harder on your legs than probably any sport in the world. He must have had an amazing rehabilitation. Pre season comes around, it's the last year of Nash's contract. On the last year, of an NBA contract. even if the Lakers cut Nash and declare him a hardship due to injury they still have to pay him his full salary. Steve Nash shows up to training camp, picks up his bag at the baggage claim of the airport, blows his back out, again sees only his own personal DR, and retires on the advice of his DR. I have no way of proving definitively whether or not Steve Nash was scamming the Lakers. But if he were, the way his time with the team went down was the PERFECT way to put in the absolute bare minimum effort for the maximum amount of money. Had the Lakers got CP3, he was younger, in his prime, and a better defender by a mile! I know CP3 is always injured in the playoffs. But at least with CP3 it doesn't even look like he's faking an injury. His effort has never been in question.

If the CP3-Lakers-Rockets trade was not voided, the Hornets free agent PF David West would have joined CP3 on the Lakers by signing for the same $40M/4 years he got from the Pacers. Las Vegas oddsmakers knew that barring major injury, the Kobe-CP3-Bynum-Metta-David West Lakers would have beat the LeBron-Wade-Bash-Chalmers-Joel Anthony Heat in the 2012 Finals. Since all the "Should-Have-Been-Lakers" were actually healthy during the 2012 Playoffs, Kobe would have taken 1 Chip & 1 Finals MVP from LeBron. Would Kobe have played in the 2012 Summer Olympics or would he have taken extra R&R before Lakers Training Camp? No one knows. Given that Kobe made a Faustian Bargain for 4 am Practices and High Availability over R&R and Nightly Sleep, he’d remain a High-Injury-Risk at age 34 over April-May-June 2013. Ray Allen also joined the Heat in their league-best 66-win 2012-13 Season. Even with CP3 and David West lowering the needed-MPG from Kobe during 2011-12 Season, the 2012 Finals would have accumulated more mileage. Ditto for 2012-13 Season when Kobe tore his Achilles on 13 April 2013. All those factors suggest one of these Kobe legacy outcomes: • Kobe wins 2nd Olympic Gold & Lakers win 59-62 games but Kobe tears his Achilles in April 2013; Heat win 2013 Chip and LeBron wins Finals MVP. • Kobe skips 2012 Olympics & Lakers win 62-65 games but Kobe tears his Achilles in the May 2013 Semi-Finals; Heat win 2013 Chip and LeBron wins Finals MVP. • Kobe skips 2012 Olympics & Lakers win 62-65 games but Kobe tears his Achilles in the May 2013 Conference Finals; Heat win 2013 Chip and LeBron wins Finals MVP. • Kobe skips 2012 Olympics & Lakers win 62-65 games but Kobe tears his Achilles in the June 2013 Finals; Lakers lose to the Heat and LeBron wins Finals MVP. • Kobe skips 2012 Olympics & Lakers win 62-65 games; Lakers lose to the Heat in the June 2013 Finals and LeBron wins Finals MVP. • Kobe skips 2012 Olympics & Lakers win 62-65 games; Lakers beat the Heat in the June 2013 Finals and Kobe wins Finals MVP. Due to High Injury Risk, most probabilities sum to age 34 Kobe tearing his Achilles before or during the 2013 Finals with the LeBron-Wade-Bosh-Allen Heat winning that Chip, and LeBron earning his first Finals MVP. Summarizing their legacies up now, 6 Chip, 8-9 Finals, 3 FMVP Kobe would indisputably rank over 3 Chip, 10 Finals, 3 FMVP Lebron. LeBron needs to win another Chip to expand the TOP 2 After MJ ( Kareem, and Kobe) Debate into a TOP 3 After MJ Debate.

@soulofamerica
@soulofamerica 10 місяців тому
@@jveeaoi5796 David West was a free agent on the Pelicans who just recovered from injury and wanted $10M/year for 3-4 years. With the Gasol & Odom trade outs for CP3 on 8 December 2011, the Lakers had cap space to continue CP3's salary and pay David West $30m/ 3 years while keeping their veteran bench: D Fisher, Matt Barnes & Steve Blake. If the trade was not uniquely & unfairly canceled, David West would have signed because he liked CP3 dimes and Kobe already proved that he would reduce his Usage Rate and hit open teammates if needed to win Chips in 2009 and 2010 (like MJ did with Paxton & Kerr). On 19 December 2011, Kobe had a Grade 2 right wrist ligament tear 6 days before 2011-12 Season start on Christmas. Kobe was determined to make the Playoffs despite the Lakers losing Odom for no assets. He took painkillers and played 56 straight games. That season age 26 CP3 was 1st Team All-NBA, 1st Team All-Defense, 20 PPG, 39 3FG% & Assist-to-Turnover leader. Age 24 Andrew Bynum was 2nd Team All-NBA. Age 31 David West was a 13 PPG, defensive PF with a potent mid-range shot. Age 32 Metta World Peace played scrappy defense. Age 33 Kobe wanted CP3 to run a High APG-Low TOV Offense. In 2011-12 Season, Kobe played 58, CP3 & Bynum each played 60, Metta played 64, and West played all 66 games. The veteran Laker bench with age 31 Matt Barnes, age 31 Steve Blake, age 35 D-Fisher & age 24 Jordan Hill was stronger than the Spurs, OKC & Heat benches. Compare them on Basketball-Reference.com. If the trade was not canceled, CP3-Bynum-West-Metta Lakers could’ve won 9 of the first 14 Laker games, giving Kobe 28 days to better heal his right wrist. Kobe could return at 34 MPG (same as 2010-11 Season) but with 46 FG% (3% higher than actual, 9 times in his career) for ~27 PPG (1 PPG lower than actual) and 2.9 Turnovers (0.6 lower than actual, but achieved lower than 3.0 TOV 5 times in his career). Playing only 52 games in the compressed season, Kobe would be fresher and the best Closer in the 2012 Playoffs. Kobe-CP3-Bynum-Metta-West-Barnes-Black-DFisher-Hill Lakers would have been a Top 3 Offense & Top 3 Defense to win 52-53 of the 66-game 2011-12 Season. When the trade hit the wire, Las Vegas sportsbooks IMMEDIATELY bet that those Lakers would beat LeBron-Wade-Bosh-Chalmers-Anthony-Battier-Miller-Haslem (46-win) Heat in the 2012 Finals. Since Kobe, CP3, Bynum, West, Metta, Barnes, Blake & Hill were ALL healthy in the 2012 Playoffs, the sportsbooks were vindicated. Kobe would have at least 6 Chips, 8 Finals & 3 Finals MVPs and taken 1 Chip & 1 Finals MVP from LeBron. Kareem #2 and Kobe #3 All-time would clearly rank ahead of LeBron's superior Stats & Analytics. There would be no GOAT debate. Mysteries affecting 2012-13 Season are: (1) Would Kobe still have played in the 2012 Olympics? If Kobe did, there's no way his high-mileage body would make it past the 13 April 2013 Achilles tear to reach the 2013 Finals. (2) If he skipped the 2012 Olympics for more off-season rest, would Kobe's body hold up through the mid-June 2013 Finals? (3) Would Dwight Howard subside his ego enough for Lakers chemistry and a chance to win the 2013 Finals? My bet: those are too many variables for age 34 high-mileage Kobe to win the 2013 Finals.

@@soulofamerica I don't care what anybody says, business is like a gamble and Stern was all about it, money and building his brand. Hell no they ain't want Kobe winning a ring over James. Kobe never had to play Mike in the finals so if this happens and Kobe wins just one ring against James and the whole narrative of him being King or better than Jordan, if you can't beat the clone than you definitely nowhere near Jordan status. You will be a great player in your own right but outside of your fans and even analyst would have to admit you not putting him over Kobe. James still a great player, don't think he needed to go to Miami but it didn't matter wherever he went if he had to face Bryant in the finals Kobe wasn't losing. He had two opportunities in Cleveland with the best team in the league those years 09-10, facing the Lakers would have been bad. I think Nike had to say yo, don't do it. Public perception wouldn't have been in James favor outside of his fans and with the rise of social media, we would be watching that finals over and over and over. James fans wouldn't been able to argue other than the numbers. I'm not a James fan, I thought Wade was the best player to come out that draft class but I respect his game. They wanted him to be that guy by any means, it's a stars league. No one saw Wade becoming who he became but you couldn't stop it. In 3 years helped Miami win their first chip. That 2011 deal will always be a problem for true Laker fans when it's brought up. Like Kobe said nature of the beast.

You forgot to add that Hornets free agent David West would have signed wit the Lakers for $10M if the trade was not voided.

6:45 The Clippers package was absolutely not inferior. The Lakers package was just bad contracts that would have further hampered the franchise.

Really teams should of given them 3 or 4 first round picks and what ever to match salary. Seems like both deals were kind of scandalous.

Dude Kevin Martin was a beast at that time period. Martin was putting up 23 points per game. Goran Dragic went on to make the all NBA team. The Rockets would have been legit contenders with Pau Gasol joining T Mac and Yao. The Hornets got Chris Kaman who was a borderline all star (at best) and 2 role players. Yes they got a pick, but the Lakers were going to throw in picks in their deal. The NBA shut the deal down so fast that they couldn't even get the picks worked out. This is nothing but Dan Gilbert crying because his GM's don't know shit about handling contracts like the Lakers GM. Gilbert knew enough to cry about it in his letter to the commissioner. But again, when Lebron leaves for the second time Gilbert and his GM immediately sign Kevin Love to a max extension.

you completely missed the point it was a horrible trade for the Hornets the Lakers were trying to pull a fast one on everyone, Harden trade was a result of cheap ownership in OKC, Lowry on Houston wasn't the same Lowry that won a title and they were shopping him and OKC ended up getting Steven Adams out of the deal, Kobe with Howard and Nash were still a good enough team, the only good thing about The Score is the smoking hot receptionist at their 500 King St office I get wood every time I see her

@@BigWillieDillie Clippers deal wasn't better than the deal the Lakers offered, it's was good but not the same, Stern vetoed because of timing and because he did what the ahole owners of the league wanted which was to f*ck the Lakers
