We have two Macintosh motherboards that were found in "left for dead" Macs that were reportedly completely rusted and destroyed. Both of these motherboards have period correct add-on RAM expansion cards which can introduce many more variables into getting the motherboards working again. Watch to see if I can get these two motherboards working again!

handful of semi useful things to know - the ROMs in Macintoshes use the standard 27XX ROM pinout, so you can easily replace the ROMs with 27C512 EEPROMs if you wish. Additionally, an 800K drive *will* work with a Macintosh 128/512 with the original 64K ROMs. It will only be able to boot from 400K MFS disks, but, once booted, the original ROMs can read 800K formatted MFS (but not HFS formatted) disks. Try it with a floppy Emu and a 128k!

You have become one of my favorite youtube channel content creators. Your personality and presentation are superb. You communicate clearly and concisely and your passion for your work is second to none. I also love that you deal with "vintage" hardware and you make them come back to life! Adrian, please keep up the great work and I wish you the best. I own my original C64 bought new in the early 1980's that I bought to get me through college term papers and I could not have done as well as I did without it. Kudos for all you do!

The power supply issue is one of them prime reasons why it's always a good idea to make sure everything is working before doing diagnostics, just as you'd point out when doing C64 repairathons, chasing a fault that isn't actually on a piece of hardware is such a pain to deal with, and the facepalm of discovery often hurts... :P

The white residue is ionic contamination. According to Chemtronics, "if not completely removed during cleaning, these ions can establish a continuing corrosion cycle, producing more lead chloride and lead carbonate (white residue) and hydrochloric acid, which will attack the copper in the board laminate." You get it from old flux used back in the day if you try to wash it with hard water. They sell a special solvent just for cleaning this white residue (as well as old, crusty or sticky, hard to remove flux.)
@jeromethiel4323

Regular old vinegar is good for removing hard water residue. It's basically calcium and other minerals, and citric acid works a charm on it. Vinegar is a weak solution of citric acid, and is a gentle way to clean hard water residue.
@kpanic23

@@jeromethiel4323 Vinegar is acetic acid, you'll end up with a bunch of acetates. But citric acid should work a treat, by forming chelate complexes.

Hi Adrian, always enjoy the video's. Before all the work removing the mods for the ram expansion, can you swap the two boards over too see if the working ram board works on the corroded mother board then if the corroded ram board works on the working motherboard, to see if it's the expansion or motherboard causing the fault.

I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve stayed up doing exactly the same thing. Every once in a while, you’ll go to bed out of frustration, get a terrible night’s sleep, only to wake up and go, “duh”, and the problem will be solved instantly… It’s how the mind works… Don’t question it-just go with it. It’s a beautiful thing…

*Sigh...* Adrian, Adrian, Adrian... OK, just a few things about the Mac and even Lisa (Mac XL). Note: Anything mentioning the Mac 128/512K also includes the Lasa (Mac XL) 1) The Mac 128 CAN accept 800K Double Sided Drives. and Boot from it. The Issues are: A) ROMs The non Enhanced ROMs used in the 12*/512K Maca can only use System 1 to System 3.2/Finder 1.1 to Finder 4.1. It can not use System 4.2 to System 6.0.8 / Finfder 4.5 to Finder 6.1.8... BEcause ... B) You have two flie formats to deal with: Macintosh File System (MFS) and Hieracrhical (sic?) File System. The MFS id a flat file system like on the old 8-bit systems with "fake" directories. HFS has true sub director trees. 2) In the past people tried to mix and match format with utter failure. MFS is for the older System 1.0 to System 3.5, HFS is for System 4.2 to system 6.08. System 7 uses HFS+ which is still compatible to the with HFS and Bootable on the Mac with newer ROMS. Putting on an older system onto a newer format, you just get a disk that will attempt to boot and then crash. Same if you put the newer system onto an MFS formatted sik, it will attempt to boot and then crash. Also, an older system disk (MFS) will not be abe to read the file content of the HSF disk. The newer HSF system can read an MFS Disk but can not write to it. If it does, it will scramble the directory. The Newer ROMs found on the 512Ke and Plus will read, boot and write from a older MFS System Disk so there is some compatibility there with older apps and files. HFS can ready MFS floppies but can not write to them or (again) it will screw up the directory. But you can read from a MFS Disk and copy it to a HFS Disk. That is a saving grace os some sort... The old days of the B/W Macs were basically the Wild Wild West days of Macintosh. Even back in the early 1990s, Jobs ended use of the Floppy port on Color Mas, he told parts makers to stop making the DB-19, used in the floppy Port. Some did, others didn't. making the part obtainable but expensive. My ol friend and Mentor (RIP) Dr. Hank Levinson , figured out that you can take a Serial Port DB-25 and cut it down and shape it into a DB-19. It took a lot of work but it was doable. You an even cut the hood into shape an d lightly solder the pieces together. A lot of his repairs and modifications are on the Apple II Newsgroups, which aere google searchable. So for us, at the time he made DB-19s because they are also used on the newer Apple IIe/c/gs as well as the Macs. And just remember one thing, Adrian... What ever gets you through the night, is alright.

Thanks for another awesome video Adrian, Mac videos always remind me of high school even though those were Classics I used. I remember seeing the older Plus models in a storage room in the back. I'm sure if they could feel they would show a sad Mac icon being forgotten in the back like that just like this failed Mac. Electronics is surprisingly robust, but it isn't invincible. Enough bad treatment and recovery becomes a chore. It's rarely impossible, but the level of difficulty increases with each component that needs replacing or repairs.

I have that same power supply solution for an SE/30 board in a custom case I made for it. I didn't butcher an SE/30, I got the board only that had been "worked on" that I had to actually repair. I don't have any Macintosh chassis, my classic Mac is a iici that I use along with my iigs, so I just designed a case similar to the iigs and printed/fabricated everything needed. The funny thing is, with color through a card along with all the other possible upgrades I could manage to get it's actually a surprisingly strong machine (or maybe not surprisingly, for me that has only used a couple original Macs and a base model Classic it feels like a whole different experience to say the least).
