I find education the best way to change behaviours. Before murdering them all you should have sent them a letter explaining how their actions affected you. In that letter you could have arranged to host a meeting with them all to discuss a way forward. I understand they are a different species to the UK Native bumble bee but a few years ago my dog got stung by a bee and it really upset her. So I wrote a letter to the queen bee demanding a talk. We had the meeting the following day and to be fair there was a huge attendance. Anyway to cut a long story short it's all sorted. The bee who stung the dog apologised and both me, the dog and the bees have got on well ever since. I'm even the godfather to a few of the baby bees. My wife and I have been invited to a wedding between two of the bees next month also. And some of the bees even help me out around the house and watch the kids so I can have a date night. A 500ml bottle of Dawn liquid and hose isn't always the answer.

I am a paramedic but also an exterminator for 39 yrs. That method is a good one to use. Just know most yellow jackets will have more than 1 entrance and exit hole. An easy way to find them is just sit there and watch their flight patterns. I like to pour a pile of dirt on all but one exit hole. You can also mix up some of that dawn in a sprayer probably half a cup to a gallon of water then vigorously shake it up and spray any stinging insect. As far as your son he was having an allergic reaction a severe one called anaphylaxis shock. This can be deadly within minutes! Immediately give the Epi pen and benadryl (speak to the Dr. For the appropriate dose before the next incident) and have EMS enroute, even if you have your Dr. Close by he may need to intubated and Dr's cannot usually do that in their office. Everytime he gets stung the next reaction will be quicker and more severe, so be ready to medicate and transport fast. If he is allergic to stings he will also more than likely be allergic to ant bites as well especially fire ants just so you know. If he goes to school make sure to have a Epi pen there as well.

@@thomashorn9152 Thanks so much for taking the time to answer, but I checked it out and for anyone else reading this, Borax can be toxic to cats and dogs. However, if it stuck on their paws, they may ingest it while cleaning their paws." and, "Borax is toxic to both your pet's skin and internal organs. It can cause respiratory problems in cats and may cause additional problems if ingested. Borax clings to cat hair and if a cat licks itself, it can cause poisoning if consumed." My favorite method is to find a fire ant mound and take a shovel full of the mound and dump it on the hole of the jackets. Wait 2-3 days and BOTH are gone. That worked 3 years ago for me, but last year, I just placed a glass bottle over the hole and waited 7-10 days before removing the bottle. No more jackets. I saw lots of dead jackets inside the bottle, and a few outside the bottle that could not get back in. Jackets and fire ants fear me. LOL.

Be very cautious. They ALWAYS have TWO or MORE entrances and you MUST do the same with each entrance, otherwise they will block off that one and use the others. I know this from making that mistake years ago. My son is also allergic and needs the EpiPen. Search until you find ALL of the entries and treat them. Another thing you can do is get 5 or 6 gal buckets, fill them with sand, then put them on top of each entrance. It starves them out. I personally added Sevin dust on top and inside each whole, before covering them with the sand buckets. I left the buckets on until after the first heavy frost and then uncovered them. Worked like a charm. Good luck and keep us posted.

"Ground bees" are the worst, and go unrecognized unlike bees that nest higher. I was raking the other day and disturbed one. I ran but they came after me. I lost my balance and fell on the side of a recent hip replacement. That was fine, but I broke a rib. One stung me on the nose and tissues around one eye swelled so much my eye wouldn't open. I'm still icing the other four stings. Some years ago I inadvertently disturbed another one. I had 37 stings, most on ankles. The pain was so severe I paced the neighborhood all night long. I had some less than 10' from my side door. So I filled a 5 gallon bucket of extremely soapy water and slowly poured it down the hole one night followed by sticking the end of the hose down in and letting a mild flow of water run into the nest for about 12 hours. - all gone. What happens is the soapy water removes the protective wax coating on the bees body and wings, then the water drowns them.

Here's a tip that might help others. ALWAYS keep on hand at home meat tenderizer...yes, meat tenderizer. If stung, QUICKLY mix a tablespoon of the meat tenderizer with water to make a PASTE. Place the paste on the sting (keep it moist). The enzymes in the paste will neutralize the effects of the sting. You MUST do this shortly after being stung. If done as I describe, in 10 minutes, you'll not know you have been stung. I have used this treatment for over 50 years!

Found a nest on property I own and were clearing two summers ago. Daughter got nailed, then me. I got 6 hits, mainly because I was busy marking out for tree clearing and didn't want to quit (if you're going to be stupid, you've got to be tough). We found out where they were coming from late the next Saturday, and planned revenge on Sunday before first light. Our property doesn't have electricity or water yet, but we had wasp spray and an old 55 gallon drum with the lid cut off. The only issue was we had felled a tree and the bushy part fell over the nest (how we found out where they were coming from because of the activity), so we had to "peel" back the branches to get to the hole in the ground. We used several cans of spray much like a Marine would use an M16 in a gun fight, shooting the little suckers out of the air, by light of our flashlights. We got to the nest, emptied our cans around the hole, and put the barrel over the top of it. We went to work on the rest of the property that day, leaving the barrel undisturbed. We didn't pull the barrel for about a week. When we did, we dug up the area, and found a giant nest. It was right in the middle of where we plan on putting the driveway. Knock on wood, haven't had anymore nests since that point.

I used a shop vac with a long PVC extension so I didn't have to get too close in daylight hours. They normally have a single entrance they use so whether coming or going, they will get sucked up. I had thousands of wasps when done in the shop vac. One small spray of wasp killer through the vacuum hose finished them off. Used this on a huge nest under my siding as well...

I learned that truck from a guy who was a bee keeper. 3 inches of water in a shop vac with dish detergent in it . Suck the yellow jackets in for a few hours . That won't get all of them but will get most of them . Leave the hornets in the water for a day then dump them

Fortunately my partner was a medic and shot me up with benadryl. Then I got stung at work and ended up in the hospital. Bees are no joke to someone with an allergy. A few years back I discovered a very active yellow jacket nest dug into a grass covered earth bank while mowing. I used the "gasoline and fire" method after dark because there was really nothing to harm, except the bees. I lit the hole after letting the gasoline soak a while and it looked like a roman candle for about 10 minutes and bees tried to make their escape, flying a few feet into the air while burning. End of that nest.

Last summer at dawn, I did some early watering by hand...there was a nest under a rock in the center of the front of the mobile home...that I knew about but forgot was there when I got to that place...in the dawning light I saw one headed straight for me...it stung me under the eye...and stung me several times in other places as weill. I dropped the hose and ran like a scared rabbit into the house...the left side of my face swole way up and it took days for it to subside. by then I had sprayed the living daylights out of that bunch of marauders with a whole can of Hot Shot wasp spray. They did not survive. I am happy they did not come back this year.

I had this happen to me about 4 yrs ago. I fixed it by leaving a vacuum cleaner hose at the entrance to the hole. I had 75' of extension cord and turned it on by plugging it in with the ShopVac switch already in the "on" position. Once on, the noise forced the "sand bees," which are actually a wasp, out of the hole, instantly sucked into the edge tool entrance and splattered out of the exit of the hose, smashed against the inside of the 16 gallon vacuum drum. Any stragglers also got sucked into the hose when trying to enter the nest. I only had to leave it on for an hour. This only killed maybe half of them, so I did it again the next day and they never recovered. "Sand bee" or burrowing, ground yellow jackets are a type of wasp. I examined them. They had NO HAIR. Bees have hair. Wasps have NO HAIR.

Wow! That's awesome. Here in Texas our danged yellow jackets nest in trees and under the eaves of the house. My husband is allergic so I get to be the eradicater. I don't mind but I got a tip last year for under the eaves. I learned that those evil bugs don't like building nests where WD-40 has been sprayed. I went all around house and outbuildings with WD40 last winter and haven't had one nest in those places this year. Sorry to say this is probably not environmental. But we live in the country too. 14 acres. I only used it under eaves on buildings but it has cut WAY down on yellow jackets this year and no nests have been on buildings where I sprayed. And I only sprayed once in February I think.

@@jimwills2094 Good to know sir. It worked under my eaves this year. The last several years I've dispensed with dozens of yellow jacket nests. Tried the WD 40 in late winter and have not needed to remove 1 nest from the sprayed areas. It's not feasible to spray the woods so they still have plenty of room. But it's made my husband and grandchildren much safer in the areas around the house.

Fish Oil is NOT an ingredient in WD-40. This is another urban legend that has been around for a long time. WD-40's main ingredients, according to its U.S. Material Safety Data Sheet* information, are: · 51% Stoddard solvent (i.e., mineral spirits: primarily hexane, somewhat similar to kerosene) · 25% Liquefied petroleum gas (presumably as a propellant; carbon dioxide is now used instead to reduce WD-40's considerable flammability) · 15+% Mineral oil (light lubricating oil) · 10-% Inert ingredients

I’ve always been afraid of them since then. Thankful Dearly isn’t allergic but so sorry it happened. Hope she gets over those stings soon. Another handy hint. I have a very serious fear if snakes, we live in a small desert town. We have regular helpful ones, and rattlers and Mojave green. They can have the rest of the yard, but hubby sprays around the house after every rain with Cinnamon and clove essential oils in distilled water. We started this after finding one non serious one inside the house and a baby rattler in the front bathroom, inside the house. Now spray every couple months, and outside after a decent rain.( Or every couple months if no rain). Smells nice too.
