Hyke and Byke Company :
I’ll be honest, I haven’t heard much of this company before stumbling upon it on Amazon and deciding to purchase it for review.

Before filming this episode, last night I did a quick search for Hyke and Byke and the only thing that I came across was a discussion on reddit where someone stated that this is a company which is very much like Outdoor Vitals in that they rebrand Chinese products for sale in the USA.

I haven’t looked into those claims myself and I’d love to hear your thoughts; do you have any experience with Hyke and Byke? Good, bad?

Professionally designed for thru-hiking, backpacking, and camping, this tent boasts superior weight-to-size ratio

Initial Thoughts :
Heavy, incredibly heavy. Once a tent hits this weight range, it becomes obvious that this isn’t the tent that the average individual is going to hike with.

You will not find a more thorough, objective review on YT than this channel. Didn't know that about Outdoor Vitals, that's interesting. I do have their pillow and love it. As for Hyke and Bike, I know some people who love their sleeping bags specifically. I haven't used them. But jeez that tent description is incredibly misleading. Bad look there Hyke and Bike.

@Franky Pelletier - Here's what I'm thinking - if he did test OV gear I'm wondering if he'd give an HONEST review(from himself only) with no excuses, no comparisons, etc..just a review on said gear.

@Tayson Whittaker For someone who is bragging on providing fair and objective data, I guess he hasn't done too much research on that one! To my recollection, he has not tested any product since the LofTek prototype ... He usually follows up on his reviews, hope he takes the time to contact you or even buy a product developed from your team recently and test it, that would be the minimum. I’m using OV products since 2018 (almost all of them!) and no one ever failed me. Your Podcasts are also super informative and interesting to follow! Keep up the great work and service!!

@TheOutdoorGearReview The interview mentioned was pretty sad to see as it was quite misleading from the current reality during that time and felt very much like a blow to me as what was told to me while being interviewed was clearly not what the article was about. The article was pretty accurate for the time period of how we started in 2014, but not 2018 when I was interview or 2019 when it was published. Either way, there is nothing I can do about that article at this point. What I can say though is I hope we at OV continue to change the minds of anyone who believes we don't have extensive R&D, top tier manufacturing partners from all over the world and innovative designs. I'd highly recommend listening to even a couple of our 50+ Live Ultralight Podcast episodes, which are mostly Brigham (our lead designer) and others on the team covering the topics of design, manufacturing and R&D.

@1 Legged Adventures Yup. There is some research done (their new backpack was actually designed by them). But most of what Tayson says is BS. Paria Outdoor doesn't hide anything and admits these are Chinese designs. However you get a lifetime warranty and USA support, so that's worth the extra $20 or so over the generic ones they source from China.
Raevenswood 12 днів тому
Is this also the same as the Paria Zion 2p? It seems like these companies are all just rebranding the same products with a slightly different twist. I was tempted to get a paria but then I remembered the lesson I learned from Fly fishing gear… you might save money buying the cheap gear in the short term but it’s going to fail you when you hook the fish of a lifetime or when you are on an trip and it will ruin your day or even your trip. So in the end you end up paying twice. Once for a crappy piece of gear and then again to buy something that is quality made. I feel the same applies for tents.

Thats interesting - I have had one of these for 3 or 4 years now, can't remember, my wife got it for me. Its actually the tent I have used camping the most, probably 30-40 nights out in it. You tent looks a little different than mine, but mostly the same, the graphics are printed in different places and the guys are different. Only problem I have ever had with it was the floor got a hole in it when i let someone borrow it, I think we didn't do a good enough job policing for rocks and sticks, a little tenacious tape fixed that though . I also have their sleeping bag and am reasonably happy with it as well. Warm enough, I got cold one night b/c i had the wrong (too thin) sleeping pad with me for the temps I encountered, but that was not the bags fault. Both the tent and bag are a little bulky but I camp off a motorcycle, so its generally alright.

So I've had this tent for about a year now (I got the blue version). So far it's held up really well. Surprisingly well actually. I knew the weight when I got it, and Im a bigger, stronger person than most, so I don't mind the extra weight. However, I separate the poles from the main body and fly and have them in a waterproof stuff sack I keep inside my bag. Doesn't take up much room in my Osprey 65 liter bag.

Please help make my former school teacher mother happy and stop saying, "exact same." (You use that quite a bit.) Mom wants you to to use the grammatically correct, "exactly the same" instead. She's sure you'll be making any of your past English teachers happy too.

This seems to be the exact tent I used to camp with my relatives… 14 years ago. Maybe many tents share this design, but it was just like this one in the video. Did the company who made it exist that long ago?

Another good, honest review! UK here and looking for a regular tent, I have a Coleman (had so long that I have no idea of the name) at the moment that I have been very happy with but it's starting to fail through age so looking for another. This was actually in my pool, along with the Onetigris :) Do you get Vango tents in the US? Last of my 3 was the Vango Mirage Pro 200 and looking for honest reviews! Thanks

I have almost the exact same type of this tent, from the material, weight and the unclear of the company, maybe they are sourced from the same company, idk. but anyhow it's a good tent, not an ultralight tent, but definitely a good tent. It took up the sleeping bag compartment in my 65l pack. I used it in the rainstorm for one full night and it came up fine. I sleep well, no leak, no creak, etc.

I'm always suspicious of companies that use false or misleading ads. Being in the marketing industry myself, I feel very strongly about that. Building good products and being honest about them is crucial, otherwise you leave yourself vulnerable to the truth coming out and you're done for. That's not even talking about the ethics of being deceptive in your marketing.

Its a similar design to the MSR Hubba NX2 and the Naturehike Mongar. The big difference is that the two tents mentioned are the ultralight tents....Naturehike is the cheaper one (got this one) and the cheap shows but it is a good tent overall.

So I'm in a bit of conundrum. You keep saying that a 6lbs tent is very heavy, yet I've been hiking for a couple years now with a Quechua QuickHiker 2 which is exactly 6lbs and I can't find an alternative which would be lighter but wouldn't compromise on almost every aspect of practicality while hiking in Scotland, where the Highland midge, sudden rainfall and or strong wind are very common so being able to pitch a complete free-standing tent with just 2 poles in about 2 minutes is an amazingly important thing. Can you recommend another 2 person tent which would be lighter and more compact but keep the practicality and speed?

Luke, your research regarding the company is correct. It’s a rebranding company. And the founder is either from OK or at least founded the company while residing in OK. Being from OK, I’ve met a few people many years ago (like 2014) that told me about this company!

What you read on amazon was most likely from a reseller. The website looks legit. They only use the word ultralight to describe the mesh. It says everything else is 63D Poly (so strong) and nothing about the zippers. Also worth noting: "Footprint w/carrying sack: 0.64 lbs. Full Tent except footprint: 5.49 lbs." That's a little more reasonable for a 2P that can support two large mattresses and a dog.

Thanks for this review! I’ve had this tent for over a year now and we love it. We made it through a major Oklahoma rain storm last night and stayed dry the entire night. The zippers are good quality so far. I also have the down hammock sleeping bag and LOVE IT!!!! I’ve used it in 30 degree temps and stayed more than warm all night in my hammock. My buddy has an MSR tent that has WAY more issues than this tent and this one is a fraction of the cost

I just returned this weekend from a 6 night camping trip with the boy scouts where I used this exact Hyke and Byke Zion 2P tent (in bright orange). It rained and stormed almost all day, everyday, with more inches of rainfall than I personally have ever experienced while camping. Almost all of the scout provided canvas tents failed and leaked in some way, but the Hyke and Byke tent was solid and not a drop of moisture got inside this tent the entire trip. The outer vents do not stay open very well, but it was never an issue as the inside ventilation is very good and my down quilt never once touched the rainfly walls. I do agree that the tent is not lightweight and should not be advertised as such. I have an ultralight non-free standing tent for backpacking trips, but it is not as comfortable or as rainproof as the Hyke and Byke tent and thus I take this heavier tent for most scout /car camping. I also had the Hyke and Byke Zion 2P tent out a month ago in a severe hail storm with several inches of marble size hail piled up all around this tent. The tent weathered it well, but the massive amount of hail was able to hit within the gap below the rainfly causing splashing of the standing water there to slightly dampen the mesh walls of the tent. There was also a bit of a river that ran under the tent and eventually started to seep through the provided ground sheet and floor to dampen my pad and clothes. This was my fault for setting the tent in a depression and I would not expect anything other than a heavy duty tarp to have prevented the eventual seeping. Overall I have been very happy with the low cost tent from Hyke and Byke, and assuming that you understand the proper usage (lightweight for car camping), I would recommend it based on my experiences. Note: Personally, I really don't care where a tent is made, or who slaps what name on it, as long as it works as intended and the price is fair. I fully understood what I was buying when I purchased this tent back in 2019.

I’ve had this tent for over 4 years now. 1st bought it for backpacking along with other budget friendly items. It comes complete with footprint and mesh overhead storage loft., etc. I’ve had it in severe wind, rain, snow, etc., and no issues. After I decided I liked backpacking, I bought a lighter weight tent and used this for car camping until the zippers failed. I liked the tent so much I contacted Hyke and Bike to purchase a replacement of the mesh only. This is where things failed: I could never get a response. If the company can’t respond to how to get replacement pieces, they should at least allow you to purchase what you need on their website. Other than that, 4 years of moderate use in varied conditions makes it a great bargain.

I have two Hyke & Byke sleeping bags. I first bought a down bag, and I loved it, so I bought a synthetic bag for kayak camping about a year later. The synthetic bag is lumpy and has lots of spots with no insulation. I've tried spreading the insulation out, and it just lumps in other places. It's a complete waste of money. I took it to Burning Man and nearly froze my arse off. I contacted the company more than a year ago for a replacement, and they want photos of the spots in the bag where there's no insulation. That's not something easy to show in a photo without slicing the bag open, so some day, I'm going to have to take the time to do a video to see if I can show it. In the meantime, I figure I'm out a hundred bucks. I still love my down bag, but now I'm really leery about buying anything with the H&B label again. Supposedly, their gear has a lifetime warranty, but when they make it hard to get defective gear replaced, the warranty is worthless. Not impressed, Hyke & Byke!

that company has all of its products produced in China and the company gives to animal welfare charities, oh the irony lol... for anyone that doesn't understand, China is the worst place on earth in terms of animal welfare. Bear farming and live bile extraction is one of the sickest examples.
i cant stand companies like this who mislead people. this is from their amazon listing on one of their sleeping bags and there is a big American flag picture beside this quote, but all of their products are made in china. SHARING TO HELP HIKING COMMUNITY: I've got one of these... the bright orange one. I added the extra lines to the stake out points for better adjustability. I carried the 6lbs back into the woods of Idaho and it rained for 2 of the 3 days... I was dry in this tent. Time will tell if it develops a leak, but so far so good. The full-body mesh and ventilation was key... zero condensation and the temps were down to 34 or so.. so again I was happy. The little triangle corner gear pockets are too small for anything but keys... so I don't use them, but the gear loft is wonderful. I put my flashlight and phone up there for quick access. Too much room inside for one guy, but I went ahead and pulled all my gear in instead of leaving it outside in the vestibules. Overall: it's a bit heavy, but for $125 I like it. And, it is so cheap I can buy one each year and still stay ahead of the higher prices for other similar tents. :)

Zion 2p here for a year now, used 3 nites, no issues, I'm sure mine has ykk zippers and yes they are heavier. I nite had rain, no leaks, 2 nites, down in the upper 30s, no condensation. It is heavy, but built, I'm in Fla. so summers you use just the mesh (hammock mostly). Calm down grasshoppa, it's no b/s, I'm perfectly satisfied with my purchase. I knew it was heavy, I haul an ILBE, so it fits, I don't hike major miles, and I do canoe camp. Excellent product so far. Waiting on your test review.

I picked one of these up for my first civilian backpacking trip. It is heavy and large. It does go up quick and easy, good thing as it started to snow as I setup. Held up great, it is way too big and heavy for single person backpacking. But, it will make a great 2 person car camping tent for me.

Howdy Luke, just thought I'd pop an official response in the comments here. We have two models of tent, the Yosemite, which uses a more affordable poly, and the Zion, which uses a ripstop poly that is more durable. We sell a lot of the Zions to more experienced outdoorsmen, while the Yosemite models are popular with forest services organizations and boy scout troops. We do apologize for those cord locks coming off and are happy to provide any replacement parts under our lifetime warranty for manufacturing defects. Anyhow, to address a few of your concerns: - You’re right that the tent is as heavier than the top-spec models, which tend to cost three-times the price. We refer in our listings to an “ultralight setup” which consists of using only the rainfly, poles and footprint (3.81 lbs). Based on this review, it looks like we’re not being clear enough and will look with fresh eyes at how we present this. - We have team members all over, including Oklahoma, New Jersey, Florida and, hey, even England now! - It’s no secret that we manufacture in China, but we have put in some subtle improvements over the more basic stuff out there, like having modular connection points for the rainfly, tent body and footprint that allow you to use just the rainfly, poles and footprint for the “ultralight setup.” - Re: tying the rainfly to the poles- Adding hardware would add weight, and you only need to worry about tying the rainfly down in the ultralight setup. - YKK zippers have been phased out since they didn’t glide right with the thin materials. Thanks for reminding us to update this off our tent listings. - The guy who manages our Amazon listings messed up putting the word “nylon” somewhere in the listing. Thanks for calling that out too. Fixed. We take your comments and criticisms very seriously and welcome any feedback that can help us improve our gear. All the best, Daniel E.

Daniel, I'm impressed that you got right on it and answered some of the concerns. I wouldn't call 6.2 pounds lightweight but that's not heavy either. Since it is a 2P, splitting the fly and the main would mean 3 lbs each. And that's not bad. My weight can vary more than that in a couple of weeks! Just from what he showed, abrasion resistance, two doors, 2 vestibules and single frame setup, and size is a plus. The tub floor does look a bit anemic and gotta watch those waterproof seems. Still, with the generous refund policies of Amazon, this is certainly worth consideration. But Luke gives tough reviews and he should. We in the community like to cut corners but not to our detriment.

I bought one of these for a tandem bike tour with my 11 year old son. For me the pros are: It was cheap. I got mine on sale for less than $100. The color green is great. I like tents that have subdued and more natural colors. Good quality. I didn't see any quality issues with mine. It's roomy. You can actually fit an adult and two kids. It came with a gear loft and a footprint--I think every tent should come with these. The cons: It is heavy, much heavier than I expected. It is bulky. For the bike it was okay. Hiking? Forget it. It can be hard to get a good pitch. There can be condensation, especially on cooler nights. Lastly, it was not as advertised. I definitely felt that I didn't get what I was expecting. But hey I got it for $100...

I had one of them for 3 years, and it was fantastic. Probably had it out for a dozen sessions. Granted, I motorcycle camp, but, never ONCE had an issue. They were very responsive to my questions, and were great to work with. Edited to add: The owner and CEO is Daniel Ede. This is a small operation, and there are only a few employees. Yes, they make their own gear. Its cheap, because they dont spend anything on advertising, and only sell via Amazon. I bought my first product from them, a tent, several years ago. They did a promo sale, for white ones (which is apparently the least popular color). I spent $85 on this very tent. Worked great. They finally released the dark green color, which I MUCH wanted. I contacted them, because I simply wanted to buy the fly-they sent it to me free. That was, maybe, 2018 or so? They have me as a lifelong customer. The tent has survived numerous rainstorms with no issues at all. Its the largest 2 person tent I have ever used. As I said-I dont backpack, I motorcycle camp, so, weight isnt a huge issue.

Not too bad all things considered, but definitely NOT ultralight! They remind me of companies like One tigris, Nature hike, 3FuL gear or river country products. The zippers may actually be YKK its hard saying because they changed the zipper pulls to paracord. Probably to save weight. The metal pulls are normally marked YKK so who knows.? Good eye! Tons of mesh, but with a thicker material rainfly it may even itself out when it comes to ventilation/condensation. The vents are also nicely placed. Some companies place them to high on the rain fly i think and rain can get in when its really windy, but i don't see that being a problem with this tent. Nice colors too. Nice freestanding double door, double vestibule design. Like you said very similar to others like it on the market. I do like high volume tents though. Plenty of room in this one! But i agree this company should not mislead people with the "ultralight" statement. Maybe if it were a 4 season tent. Hopefully it holds up well in the rain..? Curious about any condensation..? But the overall design should help in that regard. We will see, Good stuff Luke always!! Look forward to a follow up! Stay safe! Hike on!!

I bought the 2 person Zion a little over a year ago and like it. We have used as you said car camping, but also for short backpacking. I'm not one to go miles and miles, just far enough to escape people and in Western Montana, you don't have to go more than a mile in the right direction to get that. So 2 extra pounds is worth saving over $100 compared to anything else. I also have plans to use it kayak camping and don't think a couple more pounds will be any big deal there either. For light weight longer backpacking, I will just use a hammock and a tarp (and a Hyke and Byke hammock sleeping bag). What I love about the tent is the room it has. I wish we got more rain here, but as it is I have never had mine out in the rain so am interested to see your testing on that. I did buy the tent before the sleeping bag, and did buy the bag because I was impressed at the rent quality for the price. I really like the bag as well. I pretty much accept that ALL of these companies are being made by the same textile plants in China. Maybe I'm wrong but isn't say MSR made there as well? Compared to their Hubba Hubba at $450, the Hyke and Byke looks pretty good for $130. If I didn't want to carry around 2 extra pounds maybe I'd eat a smaller steak once an awhile. Problem is with that extra $320 I saved I can buy a lot more steak.

I have this exact tent. I use it for car camping and canoe trips. I've been very happy with it so far. I've camped in a light to moderate rain with no issue. Nothing quite like your testing though. I like how you call it how it is. Great video.

Isn't it 6# with the footprint. & Haven't had any problems with it & even camped in snow. Easy to set up. Try some duck tape on vents.

I appreciate your straight talk style review. Unlike most of others who are paid or sponsored by the company only talk about the good things. Thank you very much.

My understanding is that Hyke and Bike (and outdoor vitals). Used alibaba to post a list of requirements for various products and then manufacturers fill the orders. It’s sort of like a reverse Amazon.

New to hiking/camping so for the price point I purchased this same tent! When I first received it there was a hole in the mesh and they sent me a new body within 2 days. Took this on a overnight trip and it was hot with the fly on. I feel like the vents are useless. The weight is kinda on the heavier side like you said but I don't go more than 3 days hiking so it's not to bad for me. Overall I'm okay with it but I am curious to see if it can stand heavy rain. So I can't wait for that video! Loved the honest review!

The Hyke and Byke website lists the "minimum trail weight" (rainfly, poles, footprint) as 3 lbs 13 oz. I take that to mean setting it up *without* the tent body. If that's what they mean by light weight, that's a bullshit technicality.

Their phone number is associated with 785 Franklin Ave #637, Franklin Lakes, NJ. Looking that address up and even street-viewing, I do not see their store or a sign, but they have created their own Google business page and do have a map pinning this address as theirs. 785 Franklin Ave is a Post Office. Setting a company address as a PO box is a major red flag for a company like this especially when they present the address as an actual retail store location. This is just another fly-by-night Amazon peddler of rebranded Chinese mediocrity--instant deal-breaker. Affordable gear doesn't have to be dishonest or disingenuous.

claim to be nylon but actually polyester? claim to use YKK zipper but the brandname is nowhere to be found on the zippers? that is unacceptable enough.

Did I hear you right that Outdoor Vitals is also a rebranding company? They sure have some slick ads. I bought one item from them once and had to return it. There are too many other companies out there making good quality outdoor equipment so I'll stay away from the rebranders. Thanks for the information.

I have this and use it for car camping. Backpacked with it one time when I first got it but the weight was simply too much. Very roomy for two of us. Great for stargazing last month at Arches. Did well in a heavy wind at Point Reyes.

I have this tent, the stakes that came with it are completely garbage. If you have even slightly hard ground and have to tap them in, they will bend and break. I'm talking like a few light taps with a rock and they were ruined.

I've been looking for a new tent to replace a The North Face Pebble I have had for 18 years. EVERY tent I want is sold out or discontinued. Have looked at this company for hours and hours (reading reviews) and have to say no way...

ANY company that hides it's contact info such as physical address is just plain and simple SHADY! Makes it easy for them to start a new company if they get too many complaints or law suits.

I have this tent (Lime Green). I've only used it once last year in April when I camped at Cheaha State Park, AL for three nights. It may be too heavy for a back-packer, but it was perfect for a motorcycle camper! I had zero issues with it - though I did add paracord to the anchor points for more adjustability. I have not rain tested it. I generally only camp when I know the weather is going to be good. Looking forward to you taking out for a real test though Luke. Peace and love.

Luke, good review as always. I do wish you would cover the flammability issues with some of these polyester products, in particular tents. Polyester is much more flammable than nylon or some other materials, so most of them are covered with a flame retardant chemical. Those chemicals tend to be very bad for you.
