Hyke and Byke Company :
I’ll be honest, I haven’t heard much of this company before stumbling upon it on Amazon and deciding to purchase it for review.
Before filming this episode, last night I did a quick search for Hyke and Byke and the only thing that I came across was a discussion on reddit where someone stated that this is a company which is very much like Outdoor Vitals in that they rebrand Chinese products for sale in the USA.
I haven’t looked into those claims myself and I’d love to hear your thoughts; do you have any experience with Hyke and Byke? Good, bad?
Professionally designed for thru-hiking, backpacking, and camping, this tent boasts superior weight-to-size ratio
Initial Thoughts :
Heavy, incredibly heavy. Once a tent hits this weight range, it becomes obvious that this isn’t the tent that the average individual is going to hike with.

You will not find a more thorough, objective review on YT than this channel. Didn't know that about Outdoor Vitals, that's interesting. I do have their pillow and love it. As for Hyke and Bike, I know some people who love their sleeping bags specifically. I haven't used them. But jeez that tent description is incredibly misleading. Bad look there Hyke and Bike.

Yeah Outdoor Vitals is constantly shifted on at r/ultralight subreddit and r/campinggear. Tayson is like Dan Becker. Does he actually hike?

I have this tent and have used it for a year now. I have had no issues with it. It is heavier than others but the others where more expansive. The weight was not an issue for how I was using it. I thought it was worth the price. Thanks for reviewing this Luke!

I have this tent (Lime Green). I've only used it once last year in April when I camped at Cheaha State Park, AL for three nights. It may be too heavy for a back-packer, but it was perfect for a motorcycle camper! I had zero issues with it - though I did add paracord to the anchor points for more adjustability. I have not rain tested it. I generally only camp when I know the weather is going to be good. Looking forward to you taking out for a real test though Luke. Peace and love.

Thanks for this review! I’ve had this tent for over a year now and we love it. We made it through a major Oklahoma rain storm last night and stayed dry the entire night. The zippers are good quality so far. I also have the down hammock sleeping bag and LOVE IT!!!! I’ve used it in 30 degree temps and stayed more than warm all night in my hammock. My buddy has an MSR tent that has WAY more issues than this tent and this one is a fraction of the cost

I got one last December and I was very surprised at the size and weight when it came in. It has been a great car camping tent for me so far and I even took it on a mile 1/2 long hike but that’s about as far as I would go. Held up great to some Louisiana thunderstorms. I will be looking to get an actual backpacking tent soon so I can start hitting more remote camp sites.

Wife and I have had the orange version for 2-3 years. Used it about a dozen times without any issues. It's nice that they do include the footprint. It is a bit heavy which is the only reason why I no longer use it. We also comfortably used their hammock compatible down sleeping pads in the tent and in a hammock until we switched to quilts.

New to hiking/camping so for the price point I purchased this same tent! When I first received it there was a hole in the mesh and they sent me a new body within 2 days. Took this on a overnight trip and it was hot with the fly on. I feel like the vents are useless. The weight is kinda on the heavier side like you said but I don't go more than 3 days hiking so it's not to bad for me. Overall I'm okay with it but I am curious to see if it can stand heavy rain. So I can't wait for that video! Loved the honest review!

I own one of these and have used it 2-3 times in the past year. The first time was in a very arid/summer environment and it worked perfectly well... no condensation, but there was a light rain (the tend was completely dry inside). The second time was in a late fall (in Wisconsin) situation. The inside of the rainfly was completely covered in condensation as soon as the temperatures dropped. Not sure how normal this is, as I don't have a huge amount of experience camping with smaller tents. I like the fact that it comes with a footprint, and also appreciate their "stake pusher" disc they include. I also had issues with the stuff sack... in my case, the string didn't break, but the bag material was so "grippy" that it wouldn't sinch closed without a lot of wiggling and other efforts. Overall, I am satisfied with this tent and feel like it was worth the price paid.

I bought my Hyke and Byke Yosemite 2p on December 2019. Used it a couple times (covid). Yes it is heavy. I don't go for long hikes because of a knee fracture. A lot of space inside the tent and takes a lot of space in the backpack. I don't have to tie the rain fly to the tent (I don't know if instructions require it.) It doesn't leak...yet. It has none of the quality problems seen on the review. No ykk stamp. Easy to deploy, easy to put back in the bag. Was looking to purchase the Zion, but I will wait.

I normally use a hammock when out backpacking. Recently I purchased the Hyke and Byke Zion ONE (1) PERSON tent. Nice green color. I was looking for a shelter that I could use when out in areas where trees were scarce, or not suitable for hammocking. Also for use in summer in FL where there are lots of insects, and rain. I think I paid less than $130.00 on Amazon. I set up the tent in my back yard, and let it sit there for a week. It did rain a little, but the irrigation sprinklers hit the tent every night for an hour or so. I detected no leaks! I have used the tent twice out in Everglades National Park, and it worked fine. Niw that it is summer, I will be taking it out for a night or two when rain is expected. I am over 6 feet tall, and I have used a Klymit Static V Luxe sleeping pad, and I still have some room to move around. All in all a good tent for the cost in the short term. I believe the tent is covered with a lifetime warranty. It seems that a couple of 20 something guys run the company.

Zion 2p here for a year now, used 3 nites, no issues, I'm sure mine has ykk zippers and yes they are heavier. I nite had rain, no leaks, 2 nites, down in the upper 30s, no condensation. It is heavy, but built, I'm in Fla. so summers you use just the mesh (hammock mostly). Calm down grasshoppa, it's no b/s, I'm perfectly satisfied with my purchase. I knew it was heavy, I haul an ILBE, so it fits, I don't hike major miles, and I do canoe camp. Excellent product so far. Waiting on your test review.

Have had this tent for 2 years. Have taken it to the beach and NC mountains. Been through some very bad storms in it and never gotten wet. Was in 40+ mph winds on top of roan mountain last night, temp was in teens. Stayed warm and dry. I broke a pole this morning during take down. Probably my fault though. Did not tie the fly to the poles, for what ever reason, and left door open during take down and a pole snapped. I have been in very windy weather on mountain trips and also at the beach with no issues. Good tent for the money and good tent for someone buying their first real tent on a budget. Not an ultra light tent by any means, but it will keep you dry for sure and is sound in structure.

I just bought a nature hike. 20 dollars more, two pounds less. Two pounds doesn't sound like much till you are going up an incline for ten minutes with that extra weight. I'm not saying buy the nature hike. I'm saying there are options in that price range. If you haven't already seen Luke's review of the mongar 2 tent by nature hike, check it out. That's the one I bought. Not ultra light, but in my price range. Just over 4 pounds. If you want to spend double the money check into the hubba hubba. Great tent ... I can't justify spending that much and use it 5 times a year, at most
@michaelschmitzerle2587

I purchased their 2p Yosemite tent along with their zero rated sleeping bag. Personally, I don’t care if a so called back packing tent is a so called “ultra lite” tent, or even a back packing tent, as I am a motorcycle camper, so I can get away with carrying more weight on my iron steed. I payed $95 bucks for my Hyke n Byke tent and it can be set up with the fly only, hence, an ultra lite tent. Or, one can attach the mesh tent to the fly or, in good weather, just set up the tent without the fly. My tent actually has YKK stamped on the zipper pull tabs and I like that it came with a footprint, decent tent steaks, reflective guy lines and a handy disc made of heavy aluminum made to assist in driving the tent stakes into the ground. Like you said, it’s a bit bigger than a two person tent, has plenty of storage pockets and a gear loft and it’s been 100% water proof. So, so far, so good.

So I've had this tent for about a year now (I got the blue version). So far it's held up really well. Surprisingly well actually. I knew the weight when I got it, and Im a bigger, stronger person than most, so I don't mind the extra weight. However, I separate the poles from the main body and fly and have them in a waterproof stuff sack I keep inside my bag. Doesn't take up much room in my Osprey 65 liter bag.

I bought this tent in the fall of 2018 and we've probably spent at least 100 nights sleeping in it. It's held up very well. No leaks. It's taken the beating of a middle school aged scout and his buddies. It's been to scout camp three times. It's gone on a few long treks and lots of weekend camping trips. My only real complaint is the weight. It is not an ultralight tent. I bought it with the idea in mind that my sons usually split the weight with their tent mate while backpacking, taking it down to around 3lbs per person. That was a fair compromise for me because the price was good and the quality appears high. I also suspect they are rebranding Chinese made products - but I don't care. Almost all camping gear is already made in China. It's all coming from the same place. What I am most interested in is quality, price and weight. So far it has hit two of those three goals and splitting the weight amongst too people gets it to the third goal.

It would appear that some folks were so eager to point out everything I must not have taken into consideration that the main point kind of went neglected. You have to make some poor/intentional materials decisions - possibly with your rainfly and footprint - to make a tent with that much mesh that weighs that much. I don't think the tubular design helps matters. I lugged a Kelty Salida 2 up Mount Whitney. By now it's probably about a 10-year-old, discontinued item that has so little mesh that you basically have to be sitting up to feel ventilation. It weighs about 1.5# less. It costs around $130, I believe. As has been pointed out, Naturehike makes similarly sized, lighter tents. What it comes down to is the marketing. If they weren't calling it UL, the weight wouldn't really be an issue. But they are, and it appears that they might have at least come closer with the sort of non-premium materials used in other offering. So it's a little different than when there are gripes on this channel about something not being waterproof when, if you actually look at the marketing, they never claim it's waterproof. Take care.

I had one of them for 3 years, and it was fantastic. Probably had it out for a dozen sessions. Granted, I motorcycle camp, but, never ONCE had an issue. They were very responsive to my questions, and were great to work with. Edited to add: The owner and CEO is Daniel Ede. This is a small operation, and there are only a few employees. Yes, they make their own gear. Its cheap, because they dont spend anything on advertising, and only sell via Amazon. I bought my first product from them, a tent, several years ago. They did a promo sale, for white ones (which is apparently the least popular color). I spent $85 on this very tent. Worked great. They finally released the dark green color, which I MUCH wanted. I contacted them, because I simply wanted to buy the fly-they sent it to me free. That was, maybe, 2018 or so? They have me as a lifelong customer. The tent has survived numerous rainstorms with no issues at all. Its the largest 2 person tent I have ever used. As I said-I dont backpack, I motorcycle camp, so, weight isnt a huge issue.

I bought one of these for a tandem bike tour with my 11 year old son. For me the pros are: It was cheap. I got mine on sale for less than $100. The color green is great. I like tents that have subdued and more natural colors. Good quality. I didn't see any quality issues with mine. It's roomy. You can actually fit an adult and two kids. It came with a gear loft and a footprint--I think every tent should come with these. The cons: It is heavy, much heavier than I expected. It is bulky. For the bike it was okay. Hiking? Forget it. It can be hard to get a good pitch. There can be condensation, especially on cooler nights. Lastly, it was not as advertised. I definitely felt that I didn't get what I was expecting. But hey I got it for $100...

This is a great motorcycle camping tent. I have the 1 person and it's easy to setup and very waterproof. Backpacking, sure, every pound matters, but motorcycling as long as the tent isn't just massive 6 vs 4 lbs does not matter. I've found you really don't need to tie the rain fly like you did, just throw it over, clip it to the underlayer, and put down those two extra stakes.

SHARING TO HELP HIKING COMMUNITY: I've got one of these... the bright orange one. I added the extra lines to the stake out points for better adjustability. I carried the 6lbs back into the woods of Idaho and it rained for 2 of the 3 days... I was dry in this tent. Time will tell if it develops a leak, but so far so good. The full-body mesh and ventilation was key... zero condensation and the temps were down to 34 or so.. so again I was happy. The little triangle corner gear pockets are too small for anything but keys... so I don't use them, but the gear loft is wonderful. I put my flashlight and phone up there for quick access. Too much room inside for one guy, but I went ahead and pulled all my gear in instead of leaving it outside in the vestibules. Overall: it's a bit heavy, but for $125 I like it. And, it is so cheap I can buy one each year and still stay ahead of the higher prices for other similar tents. :)

This was actually in my pool, along with the Onetigris :) Do you get Vango tents in the US? Last of my 3 was the Vango Mirage Pro 200 and looking for honest reviews! Thanks

I bought a Hyke and Byke tent that was advertised as a 2.5 pounds ultra light tent. When I got it it weighed in at over 5 pounds. The 2.5 pounds was for the rainfly and poles. I returned it to Amazon and bought a Nemo Hornet 2p tent.

I live near the company in OKC and I reached out to them a couple years ago and asked if I could visit the company learn more about them. They responded and said “they do not have a store front and do not allow people to visit the company” but they welcomed me to buy more of their products.

Luke, good review as always. I do wish you would cover the flammability issues with some of these polyester products, in particular tents. Polyester is much more flammable than nylon or some other materials, so most of them are covered with a flame retardant chemical. Those chemicals tend to be very bad for you.

My Yosemite has gone on 3 elk hunts, spike camp. It has been durable, super easy to put up, has not leaked or failed yet, handled two bowhunters w all gear covered under vestibules. We split the weight of 5.4 lbs between 2 in our packs. Best bang for your buck I think due to low price. Comes w footprint. Can be used ultralight by leaving home the internal mesh and just setting up the footprint and rainfly as a complete tent and it’s in the 3 lb range. I set it up and just pick it up in full shape and can move it anywhere then stake it down. Show me a better deal.

Thats interesting - I have had one of these for 3 or 4 years now, can't remember, my wife got it for me. Its actually the tent I have used camping the most, probably 30-40 nights out in it. You tent looks a little different than mine, but mostly the same, the graphics are printed in different places and the guys are different. Only problem I have ever had with it was the floor got a hole in it when i let someone borrow it, I think we didn't do a good enough job policing for rocks and sticks, a little tenacious tape fixed that though . I also have their sleeping bag and am reasonably happy with it as well. Warm enough, I got cold one night b/c i had the wrong (too thin) sleeping pad with me for the temps I encountered, but that was not the bags fault. Both the tent and bag are a little bulky but I camp off a motorcycle, so its generally alright.

Thank you! Tent ventilation is VERY exciting to see. I hope it works out well. BUT. I have a a REALLY Bad taste for the BS. I am upset a lot for saying word ultra light and it's 6 lbs. Maybe it's a translation error from Chinese to English. 😂😂😂 Hope the tent does not leak. Thank you for testing.

There are 2 versions of the Lanshans. The Pro versions require seam sealing (even the mfg says this). I know people who have the original Lanshan 2 and absolutely love it. It has worked in all weather. But they do seam seal and nickwax it.

The Mier Lanshan appears to be already seam sealed per the manufacture. And it’s way more budget friendly than the six moon design.

My ultra light weight Lightwave Crux X2 Storm tent weighs 2.8 Kg. It would usually retail for around $750 a few years ago, but I got a good deal for $240.

Its a similar design to the MSR Hubba NX2 and the Naturehike Mongar. The big difference is that the two tents mentioned are the ultralight tents....Naturehike is the cheaper one (got this one) and the cheap shows but it is a good tent overall.

I got the one person tent and it can sleep two people if needed. So I went with that for the reduction in weight. And if you are backpacking with another person then just split up the tent and you’re solid.

I'm always suspicious of companies that use false or misleading ads. Being in the marketing industry myself, I feel very strongly about that. Building good products and being honest about them is crucial, otherwise you leave yourself vulnerable to the truth coming out and you're done for. That's not even talking about the ethics of being deceptive in your marketing.

I have this tent in orange and it has performed well for me. No leaking and goes up easy. It is heavy but the size is huge. Anyone that takes this hiking should be sharing the weight with someone. I have room for 2 people and their packs in the tent. I also have their synthetic 0 degree mummy bag and it works well too.

The people at OV have an attitude, and poor CS, and spout lots of marketing BS, claiming to have the latest and greatest products! I got fooled into buying their jacket on Kickstarter a few years back. I can see through the jacket when I hold it up to the light. I checked all of my other jackets, and no light penetrated the insulation. All overpriced products, especially on Kickstarter! I tried to purchase their new backpack several times, and each time their "system" flagged my order as fraudulent! All this despite the order being approved by PayPal, and my credit card issuer, and with me logged into my OV account. OV canceled my order three times, and listed the reason as fraud. I asked for an additional discount for all of my aggravation, and they told me absolutely NOT! I then told them to close my account, to refund all my money in my account, and to stop sending me BS spam emails! I also unsubscribed on UKposts. Good Riddance!
