Look into HDMI ribbon cables, ones where you can switch the ends. So if you want it to be Micro on end or 90* bend. I have a normal 7" touchscreen installed in what was previously a 7" portable DVD player. I cut out the back of the monitor, Basically it's an adjustable frame/stand, the pi4 hangs off the back. The 7" screen I bought had an audio circuit. I replaced the speakers with ones salvaged from a laptop. It is basically a sub notebook. I choose the bluetooth keyboard for the scenario, but I have a Logitech keyboard and trackball that work on one dongle. Anyway I use drill batteries to power it on the go. It is a full desktop with Retropie, also runs Android for movies, Anything, anywhere, with a cellphone hotspot. Also built the same into a Boombox... better for movies, plays cassettes as well. Ended up making both devices after my Piboy DMG made me think about dimensions I'd prefer. All that to say I agree. This screen will split people. I got lucky scored my 7" screen for $27 shipped. The fact that it's taller doesn't get in the way or ruin anything. I can set my 7" 1024x600 in front of 2 other monitors and see over it, so I can game and internet and movie/tv all at once. Still intrigues the hell out of me, I want one of these wide screens!

Solid video!! Love the idea. Would love to see a portrait example set up with updating stats for sports fans, weather nerds? Some fun possibilities. But maybe those are best suited for a Pi standalone project. Loved to see that the car thing was still in use! I bought one after watching your last video and can't wait to get playing with it.

For anyone who is interested in this idea, if you have an old tablet or a smartphone lying around Spacedesk allows you to use it as a secondary monitor. I tried it with both my smartphone and tablet. Feels novel at first but ultimately it doesn’t replace the functionality of a second monitor (or a second device for multitasking)

This is a neat idea for a lot of things as comments had mentioned but even a fun idea for aesthetic might be a music visualizer or clock when not using as a productivity tool. I like things like lava lamps and such when working for some added visual interest while on task when needing a short break and this might be a way to have one without needing a dedicated device. I love the macropad idea too, I wonder how well that kind of application might work on a Mac? I know you can only make videos on what gear you have access to but I know so often some stuff is limited to Windows only, and I'd love to eventually see a few ideas or alternatives for Mac users sometime!

mini monitors are a massive understatement. I've been using a mini monitor for about 2 years now and they're incredibly handy without taking up desk space. Mostly use it for messages on discord while gaming or watching a video while needing the full display space on your main monitor. If I had to describe the usefulness of a mini-monitor, it's like carrying a small pocket knife with you. Although it's a small blade and not great for splitting wood or even cutting rope like scissors can, but because it's on you at all times, you end up using it more than any other tool you own.

I use a 13 inch touchscreen portable monitor in the exact same way. People would think "why would you ever want to remove your hand from your mouse" but actually, windows does have some QoL designed for touch screen. For example, if you are using Chrome, you can touch the screen of another app, and the mouse will stay on the chrome page. Very useful for certain work flows, especially if you need different sizes of screens to fit the layout you want.

Thanks for showing one of those screens attached to a keyboard! I had the idea to attach a larger one of those (like one the same display panels used for the secondary display on ASUS ZenBook Duo and ROG Zephyrus Duo models) to a premium Cooler Master keyboard I already had and a Raspberry Pi Zero series in between, to show me function key assignments and keyboard shortcuts for various apps I'd use, as well as having a text editor installed for reduced distraction writing sessions, before I drew a mock-up in Figma and realised that it wouldn't be feasible. While on holiday, I decided to set up my Xencelabs Quick Keys (that I normally use with my workstation) with my laptop to control Evernote, since I'd keep forgetting different keyboard shortcuts in there, before I found your video and realised that you did a similar thing! (3:20) That reminds me of when I'd sometimes have Milanote open on my pen display so I could interact with cards and draw on boards using the pen!

I like the idea the only downside is the 400px vertical real estate... A lot of app dialogue boxes dont play nice at that size past win XP so it's possible to get the dialogue stuck on that screen since the title bar and confirmation buttons get cut off and the window is unscalable. 600px vertical is the sweet spot.

Like Catpaws commented there is also a way to handle this in Linux. I recall having this issue on Thunderbird email client the auto set up wizard put the Ok/ Cancel buttons below the viewable screen on several installations such that I had to use tab and guess where the focus of the buttons were, and press enter to continue. The good news is there is a relatively simple, like control + shift + click on the window which allows the mouse to be dragged off the screen taking the dialogue box with it which would reveal the hidden buttons. The bad news is I can't remember if the control + shift + click is the right combination ! but there is a way to handle this.

I think it's really good for someone who lacks the space for two monitors like I did. I elevated my main monitor and used a portable one beneath it, but I would have rather had this to keep my main monitor on eye level. I see it being good for keeping an eye on discord, controlling music or some random background video. I wonder if touch input alt-tabs out of fullscreen games

Using Windowless mode actually neatly avoids that isse - you don't tab out if you do any inputs anywhere else

I could use that for throwing a spectrum analyzer or meter-bridge plugin window on while mixing.

This would be great for things like Teams meetings, where I just want mute/unmute control handy, while I do actual work on my main monitor. If you have an old phone or tablet, there are ways of using these as small second monitors as well. As a gadget lover, I can see this channel being very dangerous for my wallet! Keep up the good work though 🙂

Really cool. You can also cheap out if you have a spare android tablet or phone and use something like superdisplay to have a wireless (or wired) second monitor to put in front of your keyboard

I'm already struggling to find space for a dual monitor setup, and this mini monitor fits the criteria of what I need. I always wanted sticky notes without the sticky part.

If you have a small desk, stacking your monitors vertically is a great solution. You can have two matching monitors that only take up the desk space of one.

You can also use the free Space desk software to turn any other computer, tablet, or phone into a second (or eighth) monitor through any network connection. I use it too turn my old Surface Pro 3 into a second monitor. It even passes touch input from the second monitor, over to the master computer. I can use a finger to drag from one screen to the next. I'm not sure if that last part works on phones and tablets. It works tolerable well through Wi-Fi, but better through a wired connection. I can set up my two laptops, running on battery, at a coffeeshop, both connected to the Wi-Fi and have one be a second screen for the other without a single wire connected to anything.

My desk setup is a little nuts. Triple monitors with a 55 inch tv mounted above them that I split into 4 virtual monitors. I do something similar to the mini monitor. I keep my phone on the stand that clips to my keyboard. Not a set up for everyone but I can't live without it now.

I can think of multiple use cases for an auxiliary monitor like this for both work and home. Right now I have one of the 15" portable monitors set up in portrait mode, for what I'm using it for this would be perfect on top or below my existing monitor. Lack of a case doesn't bother me. I have access to a 3d printer, I'll design my own.

I work from a laptop, so use the laptop display that way. And that's true for both work and personal (both at home but in different rooms). I have 2 external screens, side-by-side, and the laptop screen just below them. I put all my communication and scheduling apps on the laptop. They would be in the way or a distraction otherwise. If I had a desktop computer like yours, with a massive curved screen, like yours, then the mini display would be cool.
