It’s closed now but in the early 90s I was in Pentridge. Built in 1873 Which was a jail in Coburg a suburb of Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺. Spent 2 years in maximum security, for trafficking amphetamines after my mum committed suicide when I was 23, sent me completely off the rails. Ended up getting out, marrying, having a daughter and brought her up on my own since 13mths old. She’s now 26 and I’m about to be granddad. My life went full circle and I got out 30 yrs ago and never went back. I was there for my daughters birth, now I’ll be there for my grandsons birth, as my daughter and I are very close.

It’s an effective prison design that makes breakouts and riots immensely harder, and requires a smaller amount of guards to man it. We had ones of a somewhat similar design in reality for a while but they were closed down due to “humanitarian concerns” basically a bunch of people didn’t like that the prisoners were given almost no privacy and demanded that they be shutdown, honestly they are still some of the best designed prisons till this day and if the prisoners wanted privacy they shouldn’t have done the crime in the first place.

We’ve read about this, bonus detail: this concept was the basis of the dark camera you find in grocery stores/malls. Reality is that often there isn’t even a camera, but seeing the black shaped thingy on the ceiling makes you think you’re being watched.

That domed panopticon showed at the end is in Haarlem, Netherlands. It's now a small business centre with an independent cinema, co working spaces, and second hand markets on the weekend.

I think the panopticon as a concept is more intimidating than it sounds. With enough inmates with enough time you’ll develop patterns for when one gets caught even without being able to directly observe your observers. When all you have is time, time is on your side.

And the inventor of the panopticon is Jeremy Bentham. The guy who came up with utilitarianism

The panopticon effect is also a psychological phenomenon where people self monitor if they assume they’re being watched. CCTV and surveillance states create this effect.

The panopticon is also used in the Star Wars clone wars show, the design is used for a prison facility on corusant.

i was in a psych ward which was very close to a panopticon, but more of a half-panopticon. it was a desk with 3-4 nurses at a time and a med nurse and security guard, the rooms were always under watch, nurses doing 5 minute checks for almost every patient (mostly me ironically). and this was a unit for KIDS. i was like 15-16 at the time of being there and they would scan and pat us down each time we'd leave the unit. was basically prison but arguably worse

Also the sea does a pretty good job of preventing escape.

Prison design is a specialized field. I worked in a 270 Cell Block (270 Degrees of view for the Control Officer.) It was a newer prison with a design life of 100 plus years.

The primary problem with this design is you actually quickly run out of housing space and over crowding becomes a big issue.

The correctional facility I used to work at had this concept. All cell blocks were placed in a circle around the central control.

And then there was the incentive to perform well in their labor duties. The team that wins, (assembling the most product) gets flavour in their food. The team that performs the worst, gets a non-fatal shock

The term Penoptigon was originally derived from a philosopher/Historian Michel Foucault. He talks about it in his book Discipline and Punish. Which brings up a lot of questions about an invisible “penoptigon” that society lives in outside of prison.

The all time best prison concept is from the movie Wedlock with Rutger Hauer. Prisoners wear a collar that explodes if they try to escape or get out of line. The beauty is that the collar is linked to another prisoner who will also be killed. The thing is that the prisoners have no idea who they are linked to and therefore they keep themselves accountable if they want to live.

The design of a tower in the middle surrounded by the cells is a design long in use. Only the floor is concrete, because metal plates would be too expensive.

The floorplan reminds me of Millbank Prison. Millbank was made of six pentagonal segments, each with its own panopticon at their centre, constructed around a central prison chapel.

The panoptican looks like the prison from guardians of the galaxy. Is that one also based off of it

One of the primary ideas behind the panopticon was that prisoners could see other prisoners across the way, and could report on them, or hold them accountable so none of them got in trouble. It was built on the idea of prisoners holding each other accountable to better each other, under the watchful "all-eyes-shape" that panopticon means. The hope was not many guards would be needed, because prisoners would do better keeping each other in line, if they knew all it took was a guard turning a little bit to see them. And it worked, but only because the design was implemented alongside draconian measures that would hold the group accountable for the individual.

BF4 has a good example of this design, on operation locker (I think).

Foucault wrote in Discipline and Punish about panopticons. It works because it utilizes self surveillance (the prisoners survieing themselves based on the assumption that someone could always be watching). It is used in psychiatric institutions as well

The Crumlin Road prison in Belfast is built after the Panopticon model, each wing had a different type of prisoner, suffragettes, political dissidents, children etc. I recommend the tour if you ever visit Belfast. :)

The panopticon is used in the prison escape mission in Battlefield 4’s campaign. Furthermore - it’s kinda freaky when you see this trend throughout history of prisons being horrendously efficient as a means of terror. If I remember correctly: auschwitz was only manned by five armed guards. I believe there were a few more than five, but only five were armed with firearms; each guard posted in the corner had a bolt-action rifle and the “warden” of whichever officer ran the camp had an 8-round Luger pistol. Thing is, when the prisoners entered the camp, there was an ornate sign over the gate that read something like “obedience will lead you to freedom” - as prisoners were told that if they did their time and fell in line, they’d eventually be let out. Heartbreaking. There were tens of thousands of prisoners in Auschwitz, five armed guards and one ginormous lie.
