What is the largest galaxy? For a long time, the largest has been IC 1101, around 4 million light years in diameter. But in recent weeks, there has been talk of a new, even larger galaxy, Alcyoneus, which is said to be more than 16 million light years in diameter! But is that what's really being proposed in the original paper detailing the discovery? Not exactly, because Alcyoneus is a Radio Galaxy. But what is a radio galaxy, and if Alcyoneus is not the largest galaxy, then how large really is it?

I've recently realised that watching and listening to videos about space, physics, dimensions and everything in between, are very reliable ways to get me to go to sleep. I've always had problems with sleep, as it's probably something to do with my mind being very active until the early hours of the morning (up until around 12am - 3am). These videos are so fascinating, because it's all speculation and theories about things that are so mind blowingly grand and complex for the human brain to comprehend. I end up getting completely lost in thought and start dreaming, which then eventually I fall asleep.

In perfect SEA fashion, I fell asleep twice in the first five minutes and was only finally able to watch the video in its entirety when I woke up in the morning. The part on synchrotron radiation was particularly interesting. I think a video that explored all ways to produce and observe light, both natural and unnatural, would be interesting.
@robr135
@robr135 2 роки тому
You know what the problem with your comment is, and I know you meant it as a complement, but somebody curious about the video may read your first few words and get the wrong idea as you said you fell asleep twice. The danger with that wording is that to many, saying you fell asleep to something is like saying you were bored with it. Sea himself has brought this up on occasion.
@seeker296
@seeker296 2 роки тому
@@robr135 I mean isn't that something he should fix, or accept, if he's aware of it? I've never seen a video but from the title and content it seems like this is a pretty academic channel However, it might not be a good fit for UKposts, or video format. If it puts people to sleep, that might be a positive feature that people seek out that makes it suitable. But YT and video in general are for rapid dissemination of information outside of such niche applications. Basically, no reason to complain. people watch for their own reasons. If the creator wants that to change, they will change the content I'm watching on 2x speed and it's very slow paced so far

@@seeker296 His videos being laid back with his lecture is the whole point. Speeding through it because you're impatient is just ruining the experience to me. Yes, if you're watching late at night, you will likely fall asleep. And that is okay because you'll likely rewatch later. If you don't like slower paced videos because you're used to instant gratification and instant funny from fast paced Tik Tok videos, that's fine. But not everyone prefers that though.

This is the most pretentiously pointless gatekeeping thread of comments I have ever seen. As a viewer, one of the millions that watch SEA or any content creators videos, it is in no way shape or form a duty or obligation of that viewer to persuade or dissuade another individual to watch or not for any reason. There’s 10 hour loops of Bee Movie clips, 5 second shorts of meme degeneracy, 2 hour long interviews, 10 minute tutorials. UKposts is quite literally whatever YOU need it to be. Go outside and touch some grass you cornballs.

I'm continuously amazed by your videos sir. I never say stuff like this, but your content is unbelievable. Every single video is so well planned, executed, edited, and narrated. Somehow, you're able to make my mind bend enough to fathom, perhaps even comprehend, the massive scale and mystery of the stellar heavens. Absolutely superb.

Just imagine the sheer size of some these galaxies. We can’t wrap our heads around the enormity of our own Milky Way Galaxy. Imagine the thoughts of the intelligent life forms that are living in that galaxy. 3 billion light years away and we’ll never know what it looks like now. Just amazing.

Indeed. Imagine if there are conscious life out there somewhere in those galaxies. And someone would look up at their sky at a starry night and squeaks to his friends "Man, I wonder if we are alone out here". Never knowing we exist.

What I don't understand, is how a black hole inside a radiogalaxy can create that incredible amount of emissions with many parsecs of length on each side? What's the source of its "food"? These emissions are multiple times the mass of the stars inside the radiogalaxy. I hope that the James Webb telescope takes a look at Alcyone radiogalaxy. _Sorry for my English..._

Yeah same, I wonder if this could be the elusive white hole?

The “food” for these emissions are particles from around the black hole. All black holes which spin have an accretion disc which is full of gas. This gas can be anything- pure hydrogen and helium, or evolved nebulous gases with heavy elements like iron in them. This gas is funnelled into the core of a given galaxy by the collisions that formed it, I.e. there continues to be lots of gas around the black hole to this day. Contrary to the popular belief of black holes “sucking everything in”, they actually consume only a negligible amount of this gas when compared with the amount that is flung around and ejected. One of these means of ejection is via the black hole’s relativistic jets. Individual particles get funnelled onto the polar axis by magnetic field influences, but the reason they are ejected with such force is unknown. The synchrotron radiation that highlights a radio galaxy and makes it visible is created when this ejected gas changes its state and becomes plasma- the neutral hydrogen, helium, oxygen or whatever the gas might be lose their electrons and become electrically charged- igniting into a plasma, generating magnetic fields, and thus we have a radio galaxy.

@@sea_space The velocity of the ejections (rather than mere speed because the particles are yanked in as well as ejected out?) makes sense to me because black holes, share the angular momentum of the galaxy, obviously, but accelerated beyond imagination due to consolidation of matter compounded by the conservation of momentum. So the energies thrashing around would be so immense that anything under propulsion would approach the relativistic.
