not necessarily. He may know how to pronounce them, but not a lexicolog. Lexicology is science of (making) dictionary. One of my friends here in Indonesia, a Prof Denny Arnold Kwary is a lexicolog hired by Oxford English to build the Indonesian English Dictionary. Now he's a pain in Scrabble.

@@reduxdev well there is no letter to confuse the A with, so no mot Naysa, also they take the first letter only, so it would be naysa if it was written like this NAeSA, because the E is what gives the A that sound, without the E it would sound like a normal A. Besides we're talking about two different letter G and J in gif, not the same letter but different voules or something.

As a Scripps National Spelling Bee semifinalist, I take pride in being able to pronounce nearly every word an unabridged English dictionary if I know its origin. Dr. Bailly is an amazing person, and I'd love to learn from him.

At about 3:00 is the most important part - a word is pronounced right if enough people say it a certain way and enough people understand it, and words can have multiple pronunciations. There's no bureau of pronunciation and grammar or pronunciation police IRL. Do people understand you? Is that how most people pronounce it (or close enough)? Then you pronounced it right.

"GIF" stands for "Graphics Interchange Format". Pronounce the letters the same way you do when you say "Graphics Interchange Format", i.e. GIF with a hard G-sound and not a soft J-sound.

Except that the creators of the format themselves pronounced the word as "jif" with a soft "G" /dʒɪf/ as in "gin", deliberately echoing the American peanut butter brand Jif. And it's a logical choice, no better or worse then yours, just different. Like the video says, it's really down to the majority to choose.

We are lucky in Spanish. We don't have to worry about the pronunciation of each letter of the words we read because they always sounds the same, although very few exceptions. Perhaps, the hardest thing would be the accentuation, but we have punctuation marks that indicates the stressed syllable in some words (á, é, í, ó, ú). But even without them, once you are in the language it may became very intuitive. (Although, the accentuation sometimes it's diacritic. It's not the same "La pérdida de tu hermana"(Your sister died) than "La perdida de tu hermana" (Your sister is distracted)). Just a final note. You can read every word, but write it down just by hearing it would be a little tricky if you don't remember, because some letters sounds the same. For example ll and y. It's common to forget if you have to write "yegua" or "llegua" (female horse).

Firstly, he pronounced “gyro” wrong. It’s pronounced one of two ways: “yīrō,” as in gyroscopic, or “yērō,” as in the food. He pronounced it as “gērō.” I know it’s knit-picky, but I felt I should point it out. Also, I did not use the IPA (not to be confused with the beer) to represent the pronouncing because some of the symbols are hard to replicate in a UKposts comment section. And, in any case, virtually everyone can pronounce every word in the dictionary, so long as they know the IPA. In the dictionary, those sounds are represented via the International Phonetic Alphabet, so if you learn to read it (takes about 10 minutes), you can learn to pronounce everything. The difficulty is having it all memorized like this guy. That’s the really impressive bit.

Well,let me tell you how to fix that. Here in Romania, we have a word : ''corigent'' and just like the word gif,the g is prononuced as a j,or at the very least understood as a j. We romanians have fought over how to say the word : is it ''corigent'' or ''corijent'',and after trying to convince everyone that it's like that or like that,we just accepted the fact that both are correct and we just moved on.
