problem is,,,,after the first round or two, you are now accumulating all the previous rocks into an ever increasing row that quickly becomes more than the unit can handle. AND it only gets surface rocks so as soon as you plow the first time, you pull up more rocks and have the problem all over again. they make rock pickers that go deeper into plowed ground that picks up all soil and screens it to get out every rock deep down on the first pass. It goes slower and takes more energy but it solves the problem with only one application
@macfarms
@macfarms Рік тому
We pick the rows of rocks with a degelman picker. You really wouldn't want to go much deeper than the rocks the plow turns up, not in our ground. Those rocks are a bit bigger than the rake and picker can handle.....

Own my own rock rake as well and done a tremendous amount of rock removal. It's designed along the same principle. I raked one way and then back from the other way to create one big wind row. Raking multiple swathes causes loss of rocks in low spots. Eventually, what worked best for me was, after the big wind rows was to have 3 guys in front of the tractor bucket with silage forks. Whatever fell thru the forks stayed on the ground. It saved a lot of backs while still eliminating the harmful rocks to crop growth and equipment damage. Eventually, after all that, on areas of extreme rock removal, I built a skid with an expended metal 3/4 inch at a 45° angle and a concrete vibration motor. It involves a lot of manual labor but well worth it for a small refined garden spot. A small trailer can be used instead of a skid and the bottom removed and replaced with the same 3/4 inch expanded metal on a 45° angle and the concrete vibration motor. The soil HAS to be completely dry and vegetative material absent to work well. I kept the soil tilled till the vegetation degraded. It can also be done by burning the area in spring to remove much of the vegetation and using roundup or other herbicide to keep vegetation at bay while trying to clean the area.

It is a tossup with this rock picking stuff, 1 implement/ 1 job, or 1 pass high efficiency like a combine. I setups that have rakes like this poking out either side with a converted potato or sugar beet harvester picking up in the middle or one side and sifting the rocks into a bin/ discharge chute. The rotary rakes do the best job of gathering rock if their teeth are done in a spiral like on this one. All of the holding bins could use a slat bottom and vibrator to shale dirt out the bottom. All the unloading belts need to be more like the original rattling conveyor to shake more dirt out. Even better would be a rock and stick breaker combine which would have a crushing chamber on the back to turn the rocks into sand and the sticks into slivers so you have a compost to be scattered as you go.

@macfarms
@macfarms 3 роки тому
Once we rake them into rows we will go around with the rock picker and pick them up, I did another video on that. Sometimes we do rake to the edge of the field but in this case we have the road in between the field edge and the tree line so we didn’t really want to rake the rocks over the road. Also sometimes there is just too many rocks to go all the way from one side of the field to the other in one pass, so we break it up into halves.

Interesting,a second and maybe a third rake in line could be beneficial. A lot of face time.

Maybe. We've just found it best to make a single pass clean the rocks off and seed it. Seems like if you try to get them all you'll just drive yourself mad.

Most Bioplastics, Photodegradable plastics (like seen in this video), and Oxydegradable plastics still create plastic microparticles whose impact on the environment isn't positive, nor well understood. Caveat Emptor: "Some biodegradable plastics actually fragment rather than biodegrade. This is due to the addition of oxidising agents (found in so-called oxo-degradable plastics). By fragmenting, rather than degrading, they break into small pieces which can pollute soils, increase the risk of ingestion for animals and ends up in our oceans and waterways. These kinds of plastics are impossible to recover for recycling and aren’t suitable for composting."

How about some info? How effective is it? How much does it cost? Does need to be done once or annually or biannually? How much time does it take per acre to accomplish the rock moving? How are the resulting hedge rows of rock collected? A lot of unanswered questions…
@macfarms
@macfarms Рік тому
Couldn't tell you, everyone's ground is different, what works for us may not work for you. We use it because we have to. The only other option is picking by hand, can't leave the rocks in the field, so we've never really sat down and figured out how much it cost to do it or how much time it takes because it makes no difference. I'm not trying to sell them, the companies that make them can do that and I'm sure have lots of figures and statistics for you. We dump the rocks in the tree line at the edge of the field, if they start getting too close to the field then we push them further back with an excavator or tractor/loader. I believe they sell high dump pickers that can dump into a dump truck so they can be hauled away. I don't have one of them, or a dump truck so not much good to me.

Nice rake. That’s one thing I’m glad we don’t have here. Now I’m interested in the putting plastic down for corn? Nice drone shots. Beautiful area. Have a good one

This is same as the Canadian Degelman. wow your using a English made David Brown - Case tractor.
@macfarms

Yes Rock-O-Matic and Degelman were both built in Saskatchewan Canada. Tractor is a 1976 Case (David Brown) 885, we are big fans of the old David Brown tractors.

Why do you plant your corn under plastic?

Just the climate we have requires it for best results.
