In this video I turn Natural Edge Vessel from a root of a Yew tree , It was quite a challenging turn with all the dirt etc that you find in root balls and there was a massive amount of hand sanding involved but Its a stunning piece to look at and full of character .. I finished it with danish oil ..

I’m ceaselessly amazed at how craftsmen like you are able to visualize a piece of art from within a piece of wood that would otherwise be rotting in the woods somewhere. For the longest time, I’ve just been using UKposts to watch you and Matt Jordan. Love and admiration from 🇺🇸.

Andy i am a retired Nurse who did a very very small amount of woodturning in my early 40s and i loved it but it was what most people think when you say woodturning, stair spindles! I have been watching several of your videos and i am truly in awe. You give a whole new meaning to wood turning/carving and it is absolutely beautiful. I have fallen back in love with wood because of you but i am now 70 and know it wouldn't matter what equipment i had i could never dream of producing what you produce. You are a wood artist. Congratulations. You are incredibly talented and i wish i could afford one of your pieces as it would have pride of place in my living room. Keeeep turning!

This is the first time I've seen someone work with Yew like this. I had no idea it had such color variation. @@AndyPhillipWoodturning 100% agree. I'm not creative in the slightest and have an odd dislike of earthy tones, but the colours in that wood are unbelievable! Out of interest, how much, typically, would a piece like that sell for? PS This isn't a "muh price" type of question. I'm always amazed when I watch genuine craftsmen produce a piece of work and, more so, the amount of time that is put into it. I work in tech and don't even want to think about the amount of money the company I work for would charge for that amount of time D:

In carving out the inside & not shying away from it...showed that you appreciated the wood exactly as it was. A classic example of where you're not paying for the labour hours - although obviously, there are plenty of those - you're paying for the years of expertise and the vision to create something beautiful out of a piece of "waste wood". The skill in using the chisel so smoothly despite all the different densities and voids is amazing. And so too with using things like that circular jig to keep things in place while doing the interior - people who really know their tools and can come up with great solutions to tricky procedures are fascinating to watch. It's also great that these craftspeople can promote their work to a wider audience and hopefully earn a bit of extra revenue doing so. I know how hard it is for artists to make an actual living at their work. Finally, the person who said that this retained the character of the wood perfectly was spot on. Not in the slightest bit over-finished - just smooth and beautiful with the colours bought out perfectly with that subtle non-plasticky finish.

Generally, Mr. Phillip, your videos have given me something to aspire to in my own shop. This one just makes me realize that there are skill levels in turning that it is useless for me to aspire to. 99 ways for that to go wrong for every one that resulted in such success, and yet you make it look easy. Absolutely astonishing craftsmanship in this work, and the wood itself came through with stunning colors and texture. World class work.

The purple colour in Yew is usually a reaction to iron, probably from iron rich soil in this case but its wise to keep an eye out for old nails or bits of barbed wire.

I gotta admit, at first I was certain you'd fill it full of epoxy. I'm so glad you didn't. This is excellent. Congratulations!

Came to say the same thing. At roughly 6:30 I was like "Leave it alone. Do not fill it with epoxy!!!" (or resin). So relieved he didn't fill it.
@magnuscharette1132
@magnuscharette1132 2 роки тому
Same thought here. The epoxy treatment cheapens the overall product so much, it looks so trashy in comparison to just the plain wood

I dunno...it is beautiful alone, organically, but some amber or copper colored resin really would make this piece pop!!!
@seanedwards773
@seanedwards773 2 роки тому
Just my opinion, but no way! Resin would just make it look plastic and fake. But there is definitely an appeal to the resin stuff, it's really popular.
