Thousands protest against 'foreign agents' bill in Georgia

17 днів томуThousands of Georgians gathered in the centre of Tbilisi to protest against a bill on 'foreign agents', which critics see as authoritarian and Russian-inspired.
Earlier in the day Georgia's parliament approved the first reading of the bill that has provoked several days of protests. Riot police have clashed in recent nights with large rallies outside the parliament building opposing the bill, which is viewed in Brussels as a threat to future EU membership

It seems some commentators are incapable of doing Google search for "what is the 'foreign agents' bill in Georgia" 🤣 so here is one result: _"It would require organisations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as agents of foreign influence. Soon after the vote, the EU said in a statement: 'This is a very concerning development and the final adoption of this legislation would negatively impact Georgia's progress on its EU path.' "_

These individuals were actively involved in teaching methods of creating protest charges and tactics for conducting violent actions. They represent the management of the Canvas organization, and Sinisa Sikman and Slobodan Djinovic are former members of the Otpor organization, an analogue of the Georgian organization Kmara in Serbia. We would remind the public that the organization Canvas, whose core is the Otpor organization, is being used to prepare youth groups for the revolutionary scenario planned in October-December of this year in Georgia. These organizations have practical experience in participating in revolutionary processes in foreign countries and in teaching how to organize violent protests.

It allows the current pro-Russian government to silence any organization that is currently very vocal about corruption or human rights violations, including opposing media. It's basically the same law that allowed Putin to get rid of everyone in Russia years back, hence why people call it the Russian law.

Foreign agents are working overtime to keep the law from passing; doing everying they can to protect the freedoms of foreign money to steer public opinion within the country. If/when the law passes and the georgians' eyes are opened to how their whole country's been puppeteered from abroad for decades, diplomatic relations between Georgia and Ruzzia will become... "interesting".

AFAIK, "Foreign agents" applies to *every company or organistion* which gets funding of 20% or more from external sources. That would include "The Red Cross Society of Georgia" for example.

@@ninomuseliani6310 If the opposition is funded by a foreign government then it is not fair opposition but rather election interference with a potential of subversion to foreign interests. Imagine the uproar if the US Democrats or Republicans were known to be funded by Russia or China. You must have a serious double standards problem if you believe that this would be acceptable. Remember the Russia-gate scandal surrounding Trump's election - it was proven to be untrue but the false allegation was used against him nevertheless. This law is entirely reasonable.
