But Sayer HATED this version, saying they had changed the meaning of the song. Indeed, in the original text, he says "I WON'T let the show go on", whereas they changed it to "I MUST let the show go on". Personally, I prefer this version. And Leon Russell's presence is simply icing on the cake.

Listening to a replay right now of American Top 40 from May 25, 1974; 39 years ago today. This song was at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nice to listen and go back in time when I was 11 years old and hear these songs, many of which I still have today. As someone who did grow up to experience it, and with older brothers and sister, I can tell you that even as comparatively commonplace as quality musicianship and songwriting and arranging as this was, I can remember staring at my little radio and saying to myself, "this is amazing, it can't last forever." Even the 80's were amazing, they just sounded different with all of the technical gimmickery infused into the music. The 90's is where things really started to take a nosedive.
@waukee321
@waukee321 9 років тому
Steve Blaugh You're right, during the 90's was the transition. Most noticeably, groups just stopped signing in or with backup HARMONY format (e.g. America & Crosby, Stills, Nash) and it became mainly just one solo singer with the same mono type mid-range voice (cookie cutter voice-same voice and style with different song and music).

You always had the radio on and you couldn't wait for your favorite song to come on. They didn't play just 10 songs over and over back then like they do today. So your favorite song might come on once a day if you were lucky and it was when you least expected it... it really made you happy. the 70s were great. We would also listen to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater each night with the radio under our pillows. Radio was everything. From your favorite song, to spots for movies. The radio spots for Jaws terrified you as much as the movie.

It is commanding of your attention. It is that good. This performance is stellar.. I don’t want to say that the new music is boring, lackluster, and non creative, but I have to. I submit that not many bands could've taken Leo Sayer's weird little song, and turned it into a huge hit! 3DN for some reason remains underrated today, but in the early 70's they were the BOMB! Negron's voice is so distinctive and remarkable - and in what other group did you see 2 "backup" male singers? Hall of Famers to be sure - in my opinion.

And the whole concept of the band was to have three guys who could switch off singing lead depending on the song. It worked out very well.

@@colindavies5603 Nope. Sayer in 1973, and 3DN the following year. They paid homage to Leo Sayer.

When Show Go On came out I was 12 and it was among my favorite tunes. Everyone in the band Three Dog Night sing and play with such passion! I later saw the band at the Carlton in Bloomington, 1983 and their performance was so incredible I had forgotten I was on a date. When the show was over the lights came on and there sat this gorgeous woman I had taken to the show. Well, music really moves me.

I guarantee you that Leo Sayer wasn't unhappy about the Three Dog Night Version....it put more money in his pockets...also, it is an awesome version.

Sorry to tell you. But leo sayer actually was mad by the way they sang it. He even said so. That's why he went and did it the way he wanted it done

Leo Sayer has some nerve.... Ray Parker Jr wrote, You make me feel like dancing" in it's entirety at home with no help from anyone else and Leo is credited for writing it...

This song freaking rocks. I remember as a kid hearing it come on the radio and loving it not even knowing who sang it. It just rocks. And Chuck is perfect singing it.

"Liar" (by Ballard, one of my favorite musicians) by 3 Dog Night was so advanced for its day! "Mamma Told Me Not to Come" cracked me up when I heard it!

Chuck was out of is mind high, but it never became apparent until he was too far over the edge and almost killed himself in a car wreck on his way to a gig. They scooped him up, put a couple of bandaids on him, and he did the show. The audience was none the wiser. Incredible. For a great read, pick up Three Dog Nightmare by Chuck. The 70's and 80's music scene was insane. I know it, is was in the middle of it. Any drug you could want, anytime you wanted it, and women.......well, we won't get into that. As a singer, Chuck is one of my three greatest heros. The way he fought back from the addiction on and became a productive member of society is incredible. Unfortunately, I don't think Danny or Cory will ever let him perform with them again. It's too bad. The were a force to be reckoned with. I was their light guy for some west coast dates in the mid 70's and they were the consumate professionals.

***** I read the book by Chuck Negron...I loved this band..I worked for ABC records back in the 70s .Every time they cut a new album I knew I was guaranteed overtime. LOL They carried ABC for a long while. Dont know about others that read book,but after reading it and seeing how low Negron could go,I couldnt get in the shower fast enough..I really thought Chuck made 3 Dog Night.But what he did to the band with his addiction was too say the least, very selfish..I wish they would kiss n make up,but that will never happen. If I'M not mistaken it is Cory that really holds the "grudge""
@RedVynil

***** I don't know about him still having his voice. I just saw him sing, "One", on t.v. a few weeks ago at one of those PBS oldies shows and, although he CAN still sing, whatever song it is that he sang, on the record, he hits the high note and holds it for a bar or two, at this gig, he hit the note every time, but ABRUPTLY cut it off as soon as he hit it!! On the record he goes, "Oooooooooone is the loneliest number", at this gig he went, "Ooone.........is the loneliest number".

I just noticed this performance was remixed, using the regular in studio release. While that version is great, this live version is so incredibly much more enjoyable to me. The way "walkin on the wire" is thrown together is just one of the many unique presentations which I hope won't be messed with in the future. There's nothing like live music and to be able to offer this in such a fabulous way is indescribable.
