I Recreated Apple's $3500 "Magical" VR UI on a Quest Pro

I see the world is truly going crazy for a VR headset.. and it makes me so incredibly happy. People are REALLY excited for Apple's Vision Pro.. as am I. But after hearing everyone talk about how MAGICAL the UI experience was.. I couldn't help but feel weird.. I NEEDED to try it. Well the headset isn't releasing for another year.. so I decided to take it into my own hands and recreate the Apple Vision Pro's UI on existing hardware, the Meta Quest Pro. Using eye tracking, hand tracking, passthrough and a few days in unity.. I did it.
And after testing out the basic UI.. I have a LOT of thoughts on the future UIUX of AR and VR headsets. I hope you enjoy!
The APK for this is not quite ready yet. I want to spend a couple more days adding a few features and cleaning up some bugs to give people a good experience. I may just release the unity package instead so people can iterate on it and make their own! The link for the APK or package will be either on my twitter: Twitter.com/Thrilluwu or posted on my discord:

Back in 2015 I was part of the EyeSpeak development team, an AR optical see-through device for people diagnosed with ALS. They can't move their body, except for the eyes. Using this device they fully control the Android UI. We added a camera to the headset and developed our own eye tracking algorithm. It was far from perfect but did validate the use of eye tracking to control the UI.

I've listened to and read many reviewers who have lots of experience using VR and those that actually tried the AVP were pretty blown away -Extreme clarity, works fluidly and some said 5 minute learning curve (selecting, scrolling, moving through apps next level). That being said even if you're interested wait for V2 or AVP SE version - plastic, no front screen which will make it lighter and better battery life and cheaper. Another thing this has is apparently pretty high-end 3D recording which replaces an expensive standalone gadget if that's something you want to do. A couple of them said they were not impressed with the Apple demonstration and they've been through a lot of these dog and pony shows but when they actually used it that's when they got it.

I'm pretty sure that Apple made the Vision Pro out of a custom aluminium alloy for a good reason, namely to serve as one large heat sink to get rid of all the heat the M2 and R1 will generate. So the weight is a price for the available performance, and unless there are sudden huge jumps in SoC power efficiency, a lighter AVP SE made out of plastic would have to throttle a lot more, which would make it a lot slower. They did the same with the Mac Studio Ultra, where most of the volume of the case is one gigantic copper heatsink, adding almost 1kg in weight compared to the Mac Studio Max with a much smaller aluminium cooler that only has to deal with about half the power dispensation.

Love the video Thrill. As a developer, I was also on the fence about "why is this considered magical?". We've had eye-tracking in both HTC and Meta, and now Apple, so it isn't anything new. In fact, we've already used it a number of different times already in several projects where understanding what the user was looking at was essential to the experience (think training experiences in VR). The main thing why I think this is considered "magical" is as you said, the UX. The only reason why other software didn't double down on eye-tracking interfaces is that not every piece of hardware had it. Where in Apple's case, this is their first headset and eye-tracking is the ONLY way to interface with the UI, so they really spent the time to make interacting feel good. Hopefully this leads to the adoption of more headsets integrating eye-tracking as a standard.

It's a combination though. This is what Apple do best. They have some very smart UX coupled with very good hardware and sensors to create a user experience thats a step above. It would start to fall apart without the performance, the high resolution and high dynamic range passthrough, the great eye tracking and wide field of view. Yes others could do it, but they haven't, probably because it would push the price point up. Apple are very good at creating dev kits and having developers plug into their APIs, Apple have made privacy a priority with this device and the OS never sees the world etc, so many layers here which make it way more complicated that it seems on the surface (hence the comment from unity devs). In short,. the Vision Pro feels "magical" because of the sum of the parts. We'll probably eventually see third party bluetooth controllers be available for games as iOS already supports motion controls.

Google Cardboard and Gear VR used gaze based selection, with the lack of buttons or hand tracking compensated by having the user keep the gaze on the same object for a few seconds to confirm. Apple provides the same option on the Vision Pro for accessibility, so people that cannot physically perform the pinch gesture can still use the headset. And obviously neither Cardboard nor Gear VR had eye tracking, users thus had to turn their had, but the idea isn't new. Apple just looked at the possible options and then picked and refined those that added the least friction.

Crazy that you were able to create this in such a short period of time with so little development experience. I think that if some version of apple's control scheme were adapted for quest pro and built into a productivity app it would be wonderful to use. I think meta is too stubborn to copy it, but if they did something similar, they would make hand tracking so much more enjoyable on quest. I use it regularly with my quest 2, but the raycast just isn't stable enough or particularly fun to use for extended periods of time. Makes me sad that the Quest 3 won't have any eye tracking.

Hey I can congratulate a man for being able to somewhat replicate it, but let’s not act like this is remotely close to what Apple is doing lol! The preciseness and ability for the Apple product to track where your eye is looking even if it’s the smallest object or even objects stacked on top of each other. This was where people who tried said it was magical. They said it was like it was reading their minds. Other companies will replicate it, but if it’s no where near as precise, it’s a fail! What I find funny is that these headsets have been around for decades. Probably the last 10 with eye tracking. No one ever thought to do this. Now it’s so easy. That’s nothing! 😂😂😂

The first input method was never going to be a knee-feet input. There was a first ever input method: keyboard context menu parsing. That feature is still in every system, up to date. If you e.g. use firefox, windows explorer or anything else with a tab bar, context menu, regular menu and so on, you will have some keyword being underlined for easier navigation, when you press ALT once. You can even navigate mutliple divisions of an application by tabbing into them.

@hundvd_7
@hundvd_7 10 місяців тому
Sure, eye-tracking hasn't really been an option until recently, but still, I think people are just unimaginative. There are so many options you could go with, and devs just fall back on the same things they know from 2D apps. But they simply don't work the same way. Just take the Quest's finger-tracked "tactile" interface. It'd be so much better if it could just recognize a certain IRL wall or other surface in your room and designate it as a menu screen. Overlay a UI over it, and boom, you have a perfectly usable surface. And why do I have to switch tabs and stuff by clicking on menu icons? Or even by swiping as if it was a phone? They are both really uncomfortable in VR. Be creative. Let me just look 15° to the side or something. I don't want to needlessly move my hands in the air. It's tiring, it feels empty without proper feedback, and it just makes you move your hand away from the things that you are trying to focus on in the first place: the middle of the screen. Why are there confirmation windows in VR? Just ask me to nod or shake. PLEASE. NO MORE POPUPS. Also, please don't make me double-click the same button to confirm either. Click the _same_ place in VR is just as uncomfortable as clicking somewhere else on the screen. This is not a PC. Your hand doesn't just "stop" when you let go of the controller. It's not a mouse on a flat surface. And do games even need a button to bring up a menu? Why not use a real item, like a watch, a map, a helmet, or a backpack to activate it? Now you have one more which you can use for gameplay, and it's way more immersive. Or even just by looking straight down and then pressing something. Perhaps you could even map the pause menu to _sitting_ in real life. When I'm in a menu I have no reason to stand anyways, so why not let me rest. And if I _am_ resting, then it is pretty likely that I don't want to actively play either. (Of course this would have to be optional but still.) And do we even really need menus in the first place? Like, why do I have to click on Link to PC or whatever in Oculus? Why can't I just walk to the window in my (virtual) space and then reach out to connect or something? Or go out the door to exit? Or in front of the TV to select a game? Or perhaps I could just map it to my IRL room, too. If I'm standing in the middle of the room, I want to see my local games. If I'm sitting on the bed, I might want to go to the settings. If I'm facing the wardrobe, I want to customize my ugly-ass avatar. And if I sat down at my PC, I most definitely want to link to it. Or like, keep the menus if you have to, but at least let me rest my hand a bit. Make a design where there is a consistent Forward/Back and Confirm/Cancel action and let me use those functions from my secondary controller (aka not the pointer) _without_ having to wave it around. Perhaps mirror my actions 90 degrees so that what I actually am pointing at is the ground, but I'm selecting things in front of me. Hell, just put the screen on the ground. Why not? As long as I don't have to spend more than a few minutes looking at it, there's no harm in it. And it would also cleanly indicate someone in a multiplayer game that is menuing. Perhaps even a pre-made sleep animation could be applied. It'd certainly help a bit with the jank. There are so many such options that help avoid clunky 2d surfaces and buttons, and people use basically none of them.

I'm so happy you made this video. I feel like if Oculus doesn't model this same navigation as apple, they are going to fall behind. This UI is the GAME CHANGER in this space. Eye tracking and hand pitching is the future. I use my quest for lots of non-gaming activities and I HATE controllers... They are clunky, hang from my wrist, constantly need to use the strap, flipped the wrong way, I grab the opposite one, I drop them, batteries always need replacing and they are bulky. They are 2 more things I need to bring with me even when I just want to watch a movie or browse the web. For ALL of the non-gaming stuff, Apples example of the eye tracking and hand pinching is the future. Everyone sees it and it's so intuitive. Total bummer to hear Meta didn't include eye tracking in Quest 3 which means this headset will not compete with Apple Vision Pro in the way I want it to. Sometimes I'm worried that Meta is focused too much on gaming, and not on a mainstream AR product which is where most of people will spend a majority of their time. What does everyone else think?

(I guess not that much) The magic of Apple UI is not having invented the look-and-click (there are other demos out there), it's having made it polished and effortless
