Planning law is a joke. The planners just make it up as it goes along. One day your attic extension is refused because it’s over height, the next day your neighbour’s property is rezoned for a tower block. Follow the money trail and you’ll find the crooks eh?

❤❤❤ I’m a Londoner living in similar style in an off grid cabin in the mountains above Taos New Mexico. Grateful for all the same reasons you describe. It’s a privileged life, especially compared to the prisons of comfort and conformity I was born to , and the physical effort required, fetching water from the creek in summer collecting snow to melt in winter and keeping the wood stove going etc keeps me fit and healthy (I’m 67). I do have to keep a gun in case of bears and mountain lions getting too close, only to fire a warning shot so far. Heaven on earth 😊

There are very many people who make their living enforcing petty rules. It is a cancer and the rules are continually spreading and getting more and more intrusive. So much so that they get annoyed when they cannot get their teeth into off grid folks. Council tax has to increase every year just to pay for the nonsense, so it is no wonder that guys like this get up their noses. This chap is a hero!!

Councils allow large building firms to build massive housing estates on land they’ve dedicated ‘green belt’ until then, but not allow a single dwelling on a person’s own land? Sickening and spiteful!!

I used to work deep in that dreadful system, working for "The Man", until I woke up one morning, went to work, told them I was leaving, and never went back. I gave up a well paid job, ended up selling my flat this year due to interest rate hikes and now live in my van. I'm happier than I've ever been. Eddie, I salute you Sir. I've just joined your community online and have applied to volunteer at Mellowcroft. Thank you Liveration....because of you, I may just embarking on another part of my wonderful, alternative life! 🙏❤

My friend did the same thing but had a bad outcome. He built a cabin in his own woods in UK and lived there for 11 years when suddenly planning enforcement officers showed up unannounced, banged on his cabin & told him to leave or face prison for "breaking planning rules". He's autistic and can't live in regular housing due to artificial sound & light sensitivities, but he thrives in the woods. He can't live in artifical environments where you have neighbours, road noise, flight noise- long term he ends up unable to think and gets hourly panic / anxiety attacks, can't communicate, work, or function. It's like he has a mental breakdown. In his cabin in the woods, he's a totally different person. He functions 100%, can hold a conversation, is able to do his programming job on his computer, learn new things, think clearly, all his symptoms go away & he turns into a productive member of society. This type of artificial noise sensitivity is common among autistic people because they can't filter out artificial noises & it's like a big dose of poison to them. It's something to do with how we evolved as humans. He built himself a small cabin (being able to control his doses of artificial noise as opposed to it being constant, he way more productive than I am!) - and he has all the comforts to be able to work productively and live comfortably. He has a log burner, bed, bookcases, solar power etc. it's really cosy and crucially, has no neighbours, no street works, flight paths or road noise & can exercise in nature without bumping into people. He tried to get permission to stay based on the 10-year rule (if you lived there 10 years without incident then you can get permission)- but the planners argued that since the cabin was in the woods, it counted as “being hidden to bypass planning rules”. They even dismissed his evidence, saying his "photos / videos could have been altered", and "third party testimonies to say you lived there full time can’t be relied upon". Since he lost the case & had no where to go he stayed in his home & they ended up chucking him in prison. You can imagine what this would be like for a timid autistic guy. He was bullied, had his life threatened in prison & I saw it took a huge toll on his mental healthy. When they released him from prison he went back home to his cabin as he still had no where else to go (how the law thinks locking him up solves the problem is extraordinary!). You can’t see his cabin from the road but they got another warrant to check his land to make sure he wasn't living there & each time they found him, they put him in prison again.. He couldn't afford a lawyer. One day after being in prison again he returned home only to find his home and belongings had been torn down & taken away including his laptop. He told me he was so close to “ending the misery” because of the PTSD & anxiety it has caused him. The latest news I heard is that they forced him onto the streets. I haven't heard from him for a while and I don’t know what to do to help as he literally can't survive in residential areas or tents due to noise pollution, he needs a comfortable home in nature (he spent years building his cabin with solar power, flooring, log burner etc. & was able to work well online & earn) - he's not a camping type, he just needs to be away from people & noise. As soon as he's forced into residential areas with artificial noises, his ability to function drops to zero. I don’t think any of us can help aside from a major revolution in UK planning laws...

I really appreciate Eddie's point of view. Liberty should never to taken for granted as bureaucrats work ceaselessly to take it away.

Thanks for sharing your story, Im in Australia 🇦🇺 and it sounds like a similar story about the local city council I lived in for 30yrs. It went from pristine acreage to 1000 postage stamp sized house blocks. The corrupt local government got paid off big time by developers, someone was gutsy enough to make a stand. They proved that the councillors had taken personal payments to approve developers applications. Turns out that 8 city councillors were fined & went to prison over the fraudulent activities. Justice may have been done, but the wildlife habitat and very old trees, were gone forever. 😢

I loved this video. Eddie reminds me of Dan Phillips of Phoenix Commotion who sadly passed away in '21. He built houses for artists, single mothers, low income people etc mostly of recycled, natural and reclaimed materials. Eddie fought the good fight. That's some shack.
