I don’t know, I’ve seen a family restaurant suddenly get business bc the daughter posted a video of her mom sitting alone waiting for customers; some now-famous musicians used the app to gain an audience. I think the jury is still out on social media in general, bc it provides what the news does not - ordinary people doing great and positive things. Of course there’s a lot of not-so-great content too, but yeah

It's one thing to deny your kid a smartphone (they could still make perfect use of a regular cellphone to make calls and text), which could effectively hinder them access to the brian demage app at home. My child is 10 and it's our responsibility to monitor her device and what apps she's using. Totally agree with everyone here, stating that it's the parents' job to raise their kids. But let's not forget the massive social responsibility tech companies have - and often ignore. Looking after your children does not negate the responsibility of tech companies to not make platforms accessible, which can exploit a child or be harmful to it through its own systems. Regulation is not a substitute for parenting, but it still needs to happen in addition to it.

this is why we have parental lock controls, you cant blame the companies because the parents cant control their children.

Why should they have to regulate it at all? They are providing a platform that humans use, why should they be responsible for the behaviours of it's users?

Lmao what? You as a parent have full control of what your 8 year old does. My daughter doesnt go on tiktok, she has a ipad without any parental restrictions. But all her accounts are my accounts, i monitor everything she watches and does on that thing Saying its the platforms problem is downright avoiding responcibility.

Let’s not forget these apps will still track your child’s development based on their app usage. Sure, the company says that you, as the parent, have the freedom to choose what your children have in the way of electronics and app usage, but the social media platforms will always be the middleman between you and your child’s app usage, which they gladly assume.

Did you pay attention to what he said and didn't say? Personally I think TikTok is stupid. I've seen ads and I have no interest in downloading it. That being said, I found nothing in his hours of testimony to make me less concerned much less like the leadership. He needed to press one thing and one thing only. That he was not a pawn of the Chinese government and TikTok was not and never would be a threat to the American public. Not only did he not say that, his half answers were enough to get me concerned where I was not before.

If Zuck was paying them off, you’d think Zuck wouldn’t have had to go through many of these congressional hearings for social media platforms he owns as well. In fact Zuck has been to these congressional hearings more than any other social media CEO, by far..

@@PlayshotKalothey might have not been paid, but many of them have shares in Meta & Alphabet Inc. It's all public information eg Crenshaw has massive shares in both. If TikTok was to be banned in the US, stocks for Meta & Google would rise like crazy making these politicians very rich. So Mark Zuckerberg doesn't even have to try & convince them, their shares will do it for them Plus showing a firm stance against CCP builds their political image in the US. Unfortunate reality is, children's welfare & US data ranks really low on what they really care about

Why do Americans expect an app to do the parenting for them? Why don’t you have more control over your kids? A child should not own a mobile phone until at least age 12. Access to devices should be under parental supervision on weekends only. That’s what happens in my family. Even my niece did not own her own mobile phone until 17.

i know someone who, every time they say they're not going to let their future kids have electronics till they're older, they get laughed at. they know people laugh because countless parents have said that and failed, (they want their kids to leave them alone and enjoy the private time they get once said children are glued to screens) but to me it shows we've gotten to a point where people don't even believe it's possible for a child to have a life that isn't orchestrated by the internet
