The oldest knows the sacrifices needed to survive, the youngest knows what's right, the strongest thinks he can survive on his own, the mediocre thinks following strength will spare him, and the odd one out is a victim. None of them realized the forest was being cut down because they were focused on survival.

This short was way darker than I expected.

This short had a better deeper story than most Netflix series's - no dialogue too! This animation actually made me tear up.

Every year i come back to watch this it’s incredible how you can actually slowly see how your point of view changes and you start to understand each and every single character and detail in this. truly incredible writing and to the animators and sound designers you all did an incredible job

I've been watching this animation several times and I finally got the message, the fire means prosperity, the trunks are the differences between people, so the message is if we share our part the fire of prosperity will continue even in hard times. I have also noticed one of the trunks is selfish, it must represent the high class, and when everyone fights againts him the youngest trunk survives because of honesty

I love how the ending ties in with the rest of the short. It's like a way to say: we're capable of destroying our brothers for our own means, and we're doing this same thing with our "mother" nature. But, by doing so, all we're doing is destroying ourselves.

So, we're just going to forget that the ELDER log had a box of matches

No matter how young, how old, how weak, how strong, how tall, how short, respect each other and protect those who cannot protect themselves and don't let others fall off the ladder. Let the others climb the ladder with you. Don't harm others that are just being kind to you and who did nothing to you.

Each timber as i call, has a personality. The Stick: A small brave fighter The "oldest": A wise man in the wrong place. The "reddest": A most-neutral generous man, which didnt deserve it. Birch: A type of Kowalski. Not in the right place as well. The meanest: The careless for life, egoist enemy and fighter.

This reminds me of a poem I read in highschool. I forgot the name but it was about a group of people stuck in an icy cave. Everyone had a stick, but because of the differences between everyone no one would put their stick in the fire. There was a rich man, a beggar, a working man, and I think 2 others. The poem was left with an open ending, where they either got over the differences, or they all froze to death. This animation is just one of the few possibilities that same story could have ended.

It's amazing how it masterfully shows that believing "I'll be fine alone, other people aren't as competent as me" will only end up destroying yourself. Because of 1 'all-high and mighty' tree refusing to cooperate and work together to find solution, they all fail. I doubt the wise but weak little one can survive alone.. Really meaningful and simple but clear animation.

Interesting ending: Little stick wakes up to find he has no friends, but off in the distance the sound of trees being chopped down can be heard. This means two things; one, it's sad that more trees are being killed given how barren the land already is in the final shot, BUT, it also means that the little stick will have some new friends now that new timber is being made. It's oddly sad and inspiring at the same time, what dilemma of emotions well done :\

first time saw this, i think this story was about friendship and sharing but 1 of them don't give the leaf and then they fighting for fire... this short film is deep and darker than i thought.

My humble opinion as a first time watcher: “instant gratification vs a postpones one”, ergo “ in times of tragedy and needs we keep focusing on our own immediate survival instead of joining forces for finding a solutions” . Meaning: lost in the middle of a tragic event as the loss of their dwelling, instead of joining forces and looking for a more stable solution that would be eventually allowing all of them to survive on the long run, they have opted for sacrificing pieces of themselves in order to put a patch on the most immediate need (warmth”, hence arriving to conflict as soon as the source of warmth started to decline, bringing to light their inner nature. At the end, the only one standing was still focusing on the warmth generated, spending their entire night until the new day come and and the forest is kept getting cut. Just my two bits worth; maybe this possible interpretation of the story will change along the way )) thanks everybody for your comments: they were most interesting. I know this video since a long time ago but every time I watch this video it makes me really sad, not only the first two tree branches were generous and helped the other tree branches, but after the fact that they killed themselves between them is very sad and especially for the little one and the old one who have a big heart but unfortunately who don't know how to defend, and watching at the end how the little one cries and how humans cut down trees makes me really want to cry because first of all none to really help apart from the two branches, the other branches attack the less strong instead of protecting them and in addition to knowing that they are in the middle of nowhere to go and that it continues because of the humans who cut the trees, really it makes me want to cry, it's really sad all this😰😖😣😥😢🥺 Apart of that it's really a beautiful video, have a nice and wonderful day :.3❤

In the end this was necessary for the little sticks survival. Their lives did not go in vain. This video might be about how you should support the weak, but it also may be about how desperation leads to destruction and loss.

I really loved this video, despite how morbid it is. Short animations like this that tell an interesting little story without mentioning much is one of my favorite. This video also achieved making me feel a bit sad for the sticks and logs having to endure the cold...and the eventually conclusions. Such isolation, one can only wonder what it must be like...

For me this reminds me of how despite the world of trouble around us we still prioritize fighting and killing each other.
