I’ve compared boots before, but this is different. Timberlands and Doc Martens aren’t just big in the world of boots - these two brands make plain, round toe boots that anyone on the street recognizes. It makes sense that a lot of people have asked me to compare them - so I did.
FIRST GLANCE
Timberland
This is the wheat nubuck Timberland 6’’ waterproof boot, the most popular color. The nubuck (a kind of textured leather) is treated to be waterproof.
Six inches tall and pretty bulky - they’re not dressy and don’t look great with skinny jeans. Still pretty versatile.
Other signature features include a grippy rubber lug sole, iconic Taslan nylon laces, and the leather collar for added insulation - in addition to the Primaloft insulation.

Doc Martens
These are Doc Martens’ standard issue 1460, made in Asia. It’s a pretty uncomplicated boot: round toe, 7” tall, and mostly single stitched. The “full grain” has been fully corrected out, making for a shiny, plasticky, relatively thin leather.
The toe is rather snubby and overall the profile is chunky. Slightly more streamlined than Timberlands and look better with slim pants, if that’s your thing.
The sole is made from a soft, inorganic rubber and attached to the upper with the iconic bright yellow stitching. I think the sole is one of the best parts about this boot - it’s really squishy and comfy.
The biggest difference between Timberlands and Docs at first glance is in the leather - thin, plasticky leather vs insulated nubuck.

LEATHER
Timberland
The buffed leather on these boots is called nubuck and these are treated to be incredibly waterproof.
The color is quite bright and can be a nice break from plain brown or black. The downside is that they’re super hard to keep clean. Despite the waterproofing, they pick up little stains all the time. A pencil eraser, a stiff brush and maybe some Renewbuck, sold by Timberland, can help keep them clean.
Doc Martens
This semi-bright leather comes from either South America or Asia, and super, super smooth and with no trace of grain, which makes them look plasticky to me.
They’re easier to keep clean than the Timberlands and just need an occasional polish. They’re not super waterproof but improve if you treat them with a product that has beeswax in it.
I know that the aesthetic speaks to a lot of people but I gotta say, to me, it’s pretty cheap-looking leather.
SOLE
Timberland
Gripstick lug rubber outsole, made from 10% recycled materials, rubber midsole, urethane insole, and a removable foam insert to top it all off. No leather or cork here, but a steel shank provides a nice bit of arch support. Excellent shock absorption and comfy out of the box.
The sole is cemented to the upper with a bonwelt, not totally unlike sneakers. It’s not bad quality - waterproof, with sealed seams - but once you go through the sole, that’s probably the end of this boot.
Doc Martens
The sole is my favorite part of these Docs. Super soft with excellent shock absorption. There’s a rubber outsole, cork material and then a urethane insole, but there’s no shank, less stability and arch support than Timberland.
The pronounced yellow stitching isn’t a normal Goodyear welt - it’s actually made with an unusual heat sewing technique that makes them hard to resole.
FIT & COMFORT
Timberland
I’m usually an 11.5 and went down to an 11, which fits fine - it’s a pretty roomy boot. Great arch support and shock absorption.
Doc Martens
I got the 11s because they don’t come in half sizes. They fit OK - I would have preferred a 10.5 but definitely couldn't get a 10. Generally the fit was blobby and generic. Super comfy sole and excellent shock absorption, but doesn’t contour to the foot and the arch support is meh.
PRICE
Timberland
Generally between $160 and $180.
Doc Martens
Between $120 and $145.
PROS/CONS
Timberland
PROS
*Waterproof and insulated
*Better arch support
*Better grip
*More masculine
*Generally I consider them tougher boots
CONS
*Slightly pricier
*Super hard to keep clean
*Doesn’t patina well; looks best when new-looking
*Lining not super durable
*Too bulky to wear with slim or skinny jeans
Doc Martens
PROS
*Leather is easier to manage
*Very cheap
*Super soft sole
*Slightly better shock absorption
CONS
*Unlined
*Not waterproof
*Shapeless
*No shank
*Thin, plasticky leather
*Not versatile

Phantom Warrior I bought my first pair of Tims for about $140, and shopped around to at least 5 stores all over town, the only way I could see them being under $100 is second hand or if you luckily find your size at a place like Ross’. But I still couldn’t imagine a brand new full men’s size pair being under $100. $140 is fine for a quality boot that will last you a lot longer than sneakers anyway, it’s like an investment. I wear mine everyday, I find it crazy how some guys own like 100 pairs of Nike’s and change them everyday.

Timberlands have a beeter quality and can be black if you order them black, and they look sick. And in general the timberlands boots are known for quality, I wear a pair of hiking boots from their brazilian line and they seem pretty resistant, and i poured some water over the bottom and nothing leaked inside (while cleaning it), even though the pair wasn’t even promoted as water resistant. TL;DR: Timberlands are better and can fit any style if you just get them im another color.

I work for Timberland and I approve this message. 👌 Bare in mind however that this is a comparison of these two specific boots, not Timberland and Doctor Martin as brands. Timberland have an absolutely massive range of trainers, casual boots and work style boots. As do Doc Martin! Although you could easily associate Timberland with hip-hop and Doc Martin with rock/punk, I listen to metal and would only really wear Timberland (even before I started working for them).

I have a pair of Doc Martens shoes from the early 90's and the are the made in England and they are made with a much superior quality leather than the Asian made boot leather. The leather has worn in beautifully over the years and all that Ive done is periodically wipe them down with a damp rag. The soles have only slight wear and the footbed has molded perfectly to my feet. I know I can no longer get them, so I go easy on them. Regarding these two boots, I would say for functionality and winter wear, the Timberland would probably be a better choice for foot protection and comfort. The Docs would be better suited for protected environments where theres minimal moisture and moderate temperatures. The Timberland would be better for the cold and wet.

Have both, a pair normal timberland work boots and a pair of Dr martens Chelsea boots, and they are both wonderful. If you’re uncertain about which ones to pick just go after what type of jeans you’re usually wearing. Dr martens also have different styles so if you don’t like the gloss you could have easily get a more matt finish :)

wearing either has its merits, both are amazing if rocked right, but I find myself wearing my mono leather 1460s more than my wheat constructs. main reason is that the combat boots silhouette (which is what docs are) are more used by high end designers, Im just happy that I have an alternative to Dior 07 navigators or SLP Ranger boots.

This is really bad comparation because you have two different styles. You have the worst pair of Dr. Martens that I have ever seen. Doc's leather is one of the best (don't know if not THE best) on boots and you decided to pick one that isn't even made in England. Plus one more thing... I don't know if it is that true or if it isn't, but my mom told me that the yellow thread (is that what it's called?) is supposed to tell you, if it is a work boot or not. Because when they were first made, they were as a work shoes and as the company had grown they didn't sell just work ones, so that's how you knew who just had his/her work shoes in.... theater (as an example).
@popuppete
@popuppete 4 роки тому
You are right about the style. Some outfits will work with Docs and others the Tim’s. This review is more for fun as no one will be looking at the two trying to decide what to wear for the day. However I think he was right to get the Asian assembled boot. That is the volume model and the one that an average buyer is going to pick up. The made in England ones might have better letter (and mid-soles) but they sell in lower numbers because most buyers don’t see the value. For a reviewer who often covers boots over $500 he was never going to be impressed with the leather. Tidy, stylish and easy to clean is a decent enough compliment for a low priced pair of fashion boots.

I bought a made in vietnam pair of 1490s in 2011 and by 2018 the leather coating is breaking down and flaking away. I replaced them with a pair of original 1490s made in 1995 back when they were still made in england from a vintage shop and the leather is 1mm thicker all around and the leather is a higher quality noticeably. The surface is actually leather and not that weird plastic "smooth" coating they use now. The difference is night and day. If anyone remembers the rugged last forever Dr Martens boots from highschool in the 90s, your memeory isn;t failing you, the new Dr Martens are not as good as the ones you had as a lad. in any regard.

I have seven pairs of Docs in differing styles and colours (I have one model in three different colours as they are just so comfortable to wear - I have them in pink and green for going out and a black pair which I use for hiking and walking). I find all of my boots really comfortable and hard-wearing, though I always buy a size larger than my actual shoe size as I like quite a bit of roominess and the ability to wear really thick socks in winter. That said, I polish all of my Docs on a regular basis and I buy good quality shoe creams (rather than normal boot polish) in the correct colours which addresses the problem of colour fading as it renews the colour each time I polish them. I've never tried Timberlands, but I did once have a pair of Cat boots which were very similar (with the ankle padding) which I never managed to wear in. This resulted in them never really feeling comfortable so I sold them on eBay.
