One Foot Off the Grid

One Foot Off the Grid

3 роки тому

This video is a timelapse of how to build a yurt. We bought our yurt from Pacific Yurts (located in Forest Grove, OR). -- www.yurts.com/ -- It is a 30 ft. yurt. When you buy a yurt from Pacific Yurts, you get the yurt kit but not the platform. We show you how to build a yurt from start to finish including the yurt platform.
We built our yurt almost completely on our own. Our kids helped here and there, but they are only 9 so they are limited to how much they can do. We also had one of our great friends, Emily, come and help us when we raised the roof ring, placed the roof rafters, and put on the top cover and side cover. Two people can definitely build a yurt on their own, but having the extra set of hands was a great help.
Our yurt will be our tiny house as we build our cabin in 2021. We will have it be off grid so we do not have to permit it. When a 30 ft yurt is complete, it is about 750 square feet of living space, but we also plan to build a loft in the yurt for additional living space.
And now a little back story on us, in case you just found us on UKposts. We’re Sara and Ryan. We are your average suburban family, but 8 years ago, we purchased a raw piece of land in the Hood Canal in Washington. We’ve been developing this piece of property slowly, and this year we knew it was time to go all in. So we purchased a log cabin kit home and decided that 2020 would be the year we built a house on our property. We plan to build this cabin (as much as we can) on our own.
Unfortunately, COVID-19 put a delay on our cabin kit being produced and delivered in the time frame we had originally planned. While we could have just waited it out and pushed back starting on the build of our home, we decided to shift gears and change our course for the time being. We purchased a 30 foot yurt, and will be setting it up as additional living space when we begin to build our cabin.
Follow along with us as we build our dream in the Hood Canal.

@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 2 місяці тому
@@zacharysmith9472 the yurt took about 3 weeks in real time. 1.5 weeks for the platform and 1.5 weeks for the walls/cover/roof. Really the hard work comes after the assembly of figuring out how you'll heat it. If you'll plumb it and run electrical, and how you'll design it.

That was amazing to watch! Three adults and two kiddies (and the dogs were a great help as well). I also liked that you added that circumference to keep the rain out. And maybe the bugs as well.
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid Рік тому
Thank you! The dogs definitely help. Lol! We've lived in the yurt for almost a year now, and the bugs have been VERY low that make it into the yurt so the perimeter edge must help with that. We also sealed it with a foam strip when we screwed down the skirting. And we have been SO impressed with how dry the yurt has stayed. With the pellet stove going it stays very low on the moisture side!

@@OneFootOfftheGrid Thank you so much for responding, I’m talking to my girlfriend right now about you all at this very moment. I have the pamphlet with all the quotes and floorplans. We know we are going to have a floating floor, we’re not sure what material. First we thought about cork , but we found out that it scratches up real easy and mice will eat it. We don’t know what type of flooring we will have, do you have any suggestions, will be building in the desert. Of Joshua tree.The people at Pacific Yurts told us it would take about 3 to 4 days to put up.. but of course that’s not taking into affect the time to build a base. I will look at your whole video to see the “dull moments” 🤣.. depending on the land, will determine if we are using solar panels, batteries, or electricity. We will probably have a lot of questions. We just came back from Pacific Yurts Last Saturday. We live in Sacramento California.
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 3 роки тому
For us, building the platform was harder work than setting up the yurt. We went with T&G car decking for our floor which meant we didn’t have to put down plywood. We have been happy with it so far.
@curtiscrawford1444
@curtiscrawford1444 3 роки тому
@@OneFootOfftheGrid We were thinking of some type of tongue and groove flooring. That’s what we did in our house, with laminate. What type of power are you using, solar, generators, electricity? Based on what type of land we get in Joshua Tree, that will determine what source of power. Most likely solar panels I’m thinking. Yeah I see You guys did a great job putting the Yurt together..I watch the other videos were people put the rafters on with the slit upside down..And had to rotate it on the tension wire after they had everything up.

While these tents are commonly referred to as Yurts...yurts have rafters which curve downwards just before the sidewall...this design with straight rafters is called a Ger. Dig holes three feet deep, put in a tire, fill with dirt, tamp well, use lag bolts to screw through the sidewall of the next tire, screwing it to the first one, repeat until you are 2 feet above grade. This will give you almost free footings that go below the frost line, which will prevent the floor buckling in the winter. Either make a mechanism which will raise the clear plexiglass dome on the roof ring, so you can vent heat when it's hot outside, or just use the cloth cover the Mongolians used for centuries. Build a Rocket Mass Heater, with the thermal mass built into the wood deck to save space, so you can heat the Ger efficiently all winter.

Pacific Yurts is in Cottage Grove, Oregon. I just bought a 16 footer to stay under building permit requirements in Washington state.

What was the building permit requirement. When we asked our permit office in Mason County, they requirements were only around the height of the platform.
@leewhitmore5350
@leewhitmore5350 Рік тому
@@OneFootOfftheGrid Over 200 square feet was when the county's permitting requirement kicks in. That's separate from any electrical or water needs. I'm thinking of adding a propane gas heating stove to simplify the venting stack compared to wood burning.
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid Рік тому
@@leewhitmore5350 We did a pellet stove which allowed us to vent out the side and we’re really happy with how it heats up the yard. Remember when using propane that you introduced a lot of moisture into the air which for a yurt can be a problem sometimes.

The yurt cost around $12k and the platform ended up costing around $5k. That was before limber prices went crazy though.

The floor insulation was only on one side of the yurt, why was that? The roof was insulated, but the sides only showed one layer, for the walls. I was looking into Pacific Yurts earlier and the walls have more layers, including insulation. Thank you for the video, it did help me to get a better overall look at building a Yurt.

We put insulation under the whole deck. The portions that had decent crawl space area we did after the platform was completed.

I totally like what you did there together patiently with love. Just 1 question -> Why did you have to kill the tree in the beginning? Wasn't it possible to start your dream few meters away from it?
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 2 роки тому
Even if we would have built further away it still would have been a major risk to the structure if the tree fell. We try to only cut down trees that are absolutely necessary.

Any chance of asking you what the Permiting process was in your local? We have property in Hell’s Canyon and are considering a Yurt structure. Great video!! ThNks!!

We were able to put up the yurt in our county as an "unpermitted structure" as long as the platform height wasn't more than 30" high and we didn't have permanent electrical or plumbing ran to the structure.

@OneFootOfftheGrid 2 роки тому
Good question. There are actually a couple reasons: 1: we knew we wanted guest quarters and the yurt makes a great unique guest quarters. 2. We both run our own businesses online so we wanted to make sure we had plenty of work space as well as studio space. 3. Sara didn’t have a lot of experience in building and we had limited experience working together in a project so large. The yurt gave us an opportunity to hone our teamwork.

Hello! Me and my family are going to start a community farm with many yurts and one huge yurt for religious purposes, I tried to gather as much as I could from the video but if it isn't to much to ask what are some things that made the job a whole lot easier?
@OneFootOfftheGrid
@OneFootOfftheGrid 2 роки тому
Very smart to ask these questions before trying to install. A couple of the most important ones: 1. Have more help than you think. The covers are extremely heavy. I'd say having 4-5 people would make it go pretty smoothly. 2. Use a scaffolding. I've seen people place the center ring with only using ladders, but the scaffolding make things so much easier. 3. Think about unfolding the cover first and then refolding. Ours what so stuck together it made it almost impossible to unfold. We put some baby powder between the folds to make it easier to install (the second time). 4. Platform - Use construction adhesive to secure the boards to the joists to prevent squeaks.
