I don't go to this store anymore, but I would go to this chain store just a little higher up than the dollar stores. They were doing a campaign for some charity, and every time a customer said they would give a dollar or two, the cashier would ring this loud bell and the crew was supposed to sing a stupid song to thank them. Talk about trying to force people to donate! When they asked me, I said, "No", and it was nice and quiet. I didn't care. Agreed. You know, Covid was the excuse everybody used for increases in everything. Look, if we didn't frequent those businesses they wouldn't get a salary at all. We were all hit but the prices didn't go down yet tips were still expected. I don't tip extra or otherwise (don't judge, I'm less than 1% but tipping is customary not obligatory). America has gotten out of hand with tips and "would-you-like-to-donate-to-Save the whatever foundation"? at the register, or round up and donate to the whatever for whomever cause? STOP IT. Yeah. I think all the extra fees will just make people not go out anymore. Tips make people with less money feel bad that they don't want to pay it. I am trying to save for a home, but I only make 65000 per year. Therefore, I need to save a lot for a down payment because I can't get enough of a loan ( lol 😑). I’m in agreement with the problems with tipping. Employers need to start paying their staff a living wage. Recently I noticed Panera order takers are requesting a tip. Once your order is taken and you’ve paid up front the rest is up to you. You get your own drink, pick up your order at the counter, and clear your own table afterwards. I get to tip the person who entered my order and took my money!!! Most restaurants in my area don’t have great service, the reason is always due to the lack of staff. If the owners would pay the staff a decent wage and train their staff properly I believe more of us would go out to eat and the owners, staff, and customers would all benefit.

Relatively new follower and I love your honesty and rationale on tipping. In many countries tipping is unusual and is only done if you have a huge party of people or the waitperson did something special. Our Australian friends make fun of us and once commented when we passed a statue with its hand facing out… “ go ahead and be a good American. Leave him some money too!” Obviously he was joking about tipping in the US. It is TOTALLY out of hand!

thank you im so happy someone else is talking about this topic! I have stopped dining out and will only pay in cash so I can avoid tipping more than I should. (I do tip) but these people need to stop expecting me to pay their bills and not put an attitude when I tip less than how much they want. I feel like tips should be optional and should be given if they really want to. I am also noticing this reoccurring pattern of having to scan a QR code to buy things at the restaurant and these waiters will still expect a tip? (when I literally did all the work) Also, Canada is not like America these people are making a decent wage (just like any other customer service or retail employee would make) I have worked in customer service and fast food before and I never expected a single thing I feel like people are being too greedy and some restaurants even set their minimum as 18 percent tips? that's insane because I feel like they just did their job.

The only time I tip for take out is at my favorite Mexican place because they include chips & salsa & they always make my order correctly (veggie burrito no dairy or beans). Yes, I’m a vegan who doesn’t like beans- judge away. I don’t go out to eat as often as I did a few years ago. I’d feel more comfortable tipping based on the weight of the tray, how many plates they have to carry, & if they are polite & attentive. If my water glass is close to empty I do expect it to be refilled without having to flag someone down. I think tipping is bs, but I do it if someone earned it. I recently picked up a loaf of bread at a cafe & the iPad spun around asking for a tip. They didn’t have to bag it, just walk 10 feet to pick it up and set it in front of me. No tip, but thank you have a good day.

I recall when tipping was a gesture of appreciation for exceptional service; however, in today's landscape, it seems like tipping has become ubiquitous. I recently came across a video where someone purchased a simple PB&J from a store, went through self-checkout, and still felt compelled to tip. The question arises: why should one tip for a transaction they essentially handled entirely on their own? It reflects a shift from rewarding exceptional service to what appears as an expectation. It's indicative of a broader issue - companies relying on customer tips rather than providing adequate wages to their employees. This shift, fueled by what some may perceive as corporate greed, raises concerns about fair compensation and the extent to which businesses pass their labor costs onto the public.

However when I had been stationed in Korea I found out if you tip the service improves greatly(Typically service had great to begin with) and they remember you so next time you visit you get the best seats and food in the restaurant. Unlike the USA when you tip service doesn't improve sometimes it gets worse. If I do pay by credit card at a restaurant, I will select "no tip" than hand the waitress/waiter a cash tip.

They got tipped 8% on the sales. So if they got shorted there tip they still had to pay tax on that. This has all started to change. The business is being required to pay at least minimum wage. 💯 I live in California where wait service is paid minimum wage of 15.50. I have come to realize that I’ve been suckered into “emotional blackmail”. I’ve reduced my patronage to restaurants due to the select a tip %. I’ve been a great tipper in the past because I’m of an age when I remember when wait staff were paid less than $2. However, I’m rethinking tips. I’m now thinking if I do tip it should be based on quality of service and a dollar amount per person at my table. I was in a sandwich shop recently and saw the ladies hustling to make the sandwiches with a great attitude and I did tip because they weren’t just serving but preparing, same for a coffee shop. I think a dollar per drink is adequate whether it’s a small or large cup it shouldn’t matter.

Now that a lot of food and retail services are having the consumer take care of their own transaction at a kiosk I wonder how this will also evolve things. You have to always check your receipt because the restaurant sneaks other charges in there and will say it is some kind of government charge. I've also noticed that a lot of wall tags are priced differently than the price you receive at the register. They are so sneaky! We are getting nickled and dimed everywhere with the intention that we won't care or notice but it adds up a lot.

We tipped him based on the meal before the money off voucher as we were told Brits are known for bad tipping so felt pressured to prove we weren’t miserly. However we did find it crazy how we had to tip so much

I grew up in restaurants. My Mom had a cafe, my sister had a cafe and so did my grandmother. As an adult I was a server for about 15 years and I'm on the West coast where minimum wage is $15/hour. It does seem like alot I agree, when it is broken down though it's not as great. Servers and bartenders are taxed on their sales. Mostly about 18%. So if the bill is $100 and the tip is $10, then th server is literally paying the other $8 out of their paycheck. When I was a server my paycheck was almost never above $350 for 2 weeks 80 hours. Also many times bartenders end up owing the company because of taxes. The whole system is screwed up

I live in the UK and the tipping culture isn't as ingrained as North America but one of the key issues (and people do stress about it) is who to tip. Restaurants - easy - you are accustomed to tipping but what about Pizza delivery? Some tip, some don't. Home grocery delivery? Another minefield. Do you tip after each delivery (even though the supermarket levies a charge for delivery) - opinion completely divided on this. We don't need this stress - it's more of an issue, to me anyway, than the money.

I was at a sit down casual restaurant and I was there just for dessert (I got a slice of pie and a coffee at most costing $10) and when I got the bill, I was really surprised at the total something like $15. At the bottom of the receipt, it stated that $5 dollars was added as a tip and it would be pooled for all the waitstaff. As a former employee of the restaurant industry, I was appalled. I looked at the menu and in small print, that $5 add on was stated there also. So this restaurant not only wanted me to tip the server, but to tip the rest of the staff. I did not tip and I did not go back. I wonder how many other people realize this was going on.
