As a former journeyman ironworker (and boat driver for the Coast Guard), I can say you are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. When "hooking on" - raising iron off the ground or a truck, it's easy to see the balance point. But with twisted metal or underwater, or several pieces fastened together, good luck !! And if it shifts unexpectedly, all hell can break loose. Those guy are real ironworkers.

The ship's crew have very little or anything to do with taking a ship in or out of a harbor. This is the job local pilots who have extensive and years experience and knowledge of the the local tides ,.currents and navigational lights of their harbor. The captain basically turns over command of his ship to the pilot and that's pretty how its done worldwide at lease this is my understanding of how it's done.

And how long to get a crane from the Gulf of Mexico to Baltimore? And that is provide the crane does not already have a work load where it is. Off shore wind turbines require the same scale of lifting capacity, and some of those are located on the east coast. If they're not being used there's probably a good reason for it.

these cranes have way more capacity than you state, but where do you put such a heavy piece after it's cut? The barges have limited space so that's the main reason to make them into bite size pieces.

They can't abandon the vessel - The crew have all the facilities on board for a multi week sea journey, so this is not an inconvenience for them. If the ship needs to be moved or repositioned, having the original crew on board will be essential. They are also familiar with the emergency equipment on board and will be monitoring the cargo (Many of the containers are refrigerated - this might be food but also some Hazchem are chilled)

1) can’t enter the US without a visa, meaning most crew are stuck on the ship 2) they’re still needed to operate and maintain the ship - everything from the engine room to monitoring the reefers full of frozen and perishable cargo not to mention normal ship’s maintenance

Lots of logistics involved in bring those cranes in. Can't just toss them into an airplane and most are on barges and that is hard to bring through rough water. Most of the really big ones are in northern Europe, Korea and Japan so you would have to bring them across the Atlantic or Pacific.

The crew dropped the port anchor to try to slow down and pull to the left to avoid collision, and that has to be done from the anchor controls right up in the bow. Since none of them were injured, they apparently had the sense to drop the anchor and run afterward.

Good post. There is definitely a huge difference between the engineers and welders doing the work here. I'm a structural steel worker with about 30 years of marine industry welding and fabrication under my belt. We used to make fun of Engineers because a lot of them don't have the "hands on" experience that we do. What looks great on paper, sometimes does not work in real life. That's just how it is. A welder/fabricator who has done a lot of repair work on vessels, where you are cutting through "loaded" steel is who should be cutting on those bridge pieces. It's not for the faint of heart either. You have to know what the metal is going to do, when you sever each piece. Often times, that has to be analyzed and worked out in your head, before each cut. And even then, sometimes the spring of the steel that is under pressure can be an eye opener. It's always exciting though, and can be very dangerous. Not a job for a newbie, for sure. I pray for the safety of the workers, and hope they have the skills necessary to complete the job in a timely manner and without any injuries!!

Absolutely. I'm a mechanical engineer with 40 years experience designing large scale infrastructure. You and I do completely different jobs, but equally essential. The first thing I thought of when they were talking about clearing the bridge away was doing an analysis of each member because cutting loaded steel (especially underwater) could kill you in a heartbeat! While I can do the numbers its at best an approximation of what you have in real life. @@lmbear

Then there's also the increase in currents during heavy rains. It's not just some guy swimming out there and just cutting away by himself. There's a whole lot of big picture stuff to take into consideration.
