Five years ago, former Prime Minister Theresa May promised to scrap so-called no fault evictions that allow landlords to evict their tenants with just two months notice and no requirement to provide a reason for doing so.
Campaigners, like Ben from Generation Rent, say this has led to a rise in homelessness and that the government is betraying renters.
The latest figures show that private rental costs in the UK have risen by 9.2% in the last year alone - and first time buyers are facing the toughest conditions in 70 years to get on the property ladder.

Forget the landlords for a second, we need to address the police and the courts. My landlord changed my locks one night and forced me out illegally with no formal notice. Police did nothing, and county court is doing God knows what because its been almost a year and I'm still awaiting judgement

Private landlords don’t provide millions of homes in this country as he said… the house builders do that.. what they do is buy a property that as already been built and then there is one less property available for social housing or to buy to live in..

Why would a tenant not just get their own dehumidifier if they are having problems with damp? It’s just something that you plug into the wall. It’s not like it’s some complex installation project. I used to share a house and they NEVER opened the windows and then complained because their room and bathroom had damp! People need to adopt the habit that they have on the continent of opening windows every day.

@@allenjenkins-xd5ui He was the one that mentioned a dehumidifier so I was commenting and expanding on that. A leaky roof, poor windows, lack of damp proof etc can’t be fixed by simply using a dehumidifier! They are structural issues that need building work to fix.

It can take 14 months to get someone to move out if they go to court. How long done they need ?

The UK gov needs to put a cap on rent increase, regulate housing rental market, build and buy housing so that the country will not be bully by the banking system.

Why not further increase second property stamp duty so we can draw a line on any addition to private rental stock. That way the sector will naturally shrink over time and isn’t this what we all want!

I'm a landlord and just like others, I calculate the rent as a return on investment, therefore I simply include any additional stamp duty as part of the cost of the property purchase and charge rent accordingly. The rental housing stock is currently declining, however unfortunately due to supply and demand and the interest rate rises, rents have increased.

I have been trying to move for a year and half private renting I past affordability but so many deny children what is ridiculous and second to many people are looking so if I was giving 2 months notice even tho I'm a good tenant I would be homeless because it's hard to even rent to begin with

Landlords are good - what kind of argument is that? Nobody cares if they are good, they have too much power and have very little respect for tenants in terms of rights and compassion.
