My neighbour owns a Rottweiller, I think Rottweiller does remember faces, my first two encounters with his dog were two pleasant, after being trained by his owner, the big animal began to befriend me. One time when I was watching movie at my house, I spotted the guy was checking out my car on the driveway, guess what happened next? Rottweiller rushed over and scared him away...once again I need to mention I do not own this dog and this animal still protect my property. Thumbs up to this Rottweiller.

Powerful, territorial etc type dogs (obviously) need to be raised properly. That said, I couldn't agree more with you. They're a working dog of that heritage/instinct, they're tough, even tempered and very intelligent probably attuned to scents more than faces. A canine's sense of smell is better than their eyesight, but either way it coincides with your sentiment. Not skittish or moody they're an excellent choice. Perspective owner's need to familiarize themselves/family with a breed like this prior to make sure they aren't buying more dog than they realize or are able to handle. An example is possibly frail elderly people &/or small children can get sort of "roughhoused" when these blocks of muscle are just being affectionate by getting knocked around.

Lost my 11 year old German Shepherd earlier this year. He was amazing, my personal body guard. He was a fully trained guard dog who could tell the difference between a stranger who wasn’t a threat to me a a stranger who was a threat to me. Truly amazing loving dog, gentle with my grandkids but woe and behold if he sensed someone posed a threat to me. Miss him so much…….

So sorry for your loss. I've had 5 GSDs over the years and loved each of them. They were gentle with my kids, and welcomed visitors if properly introduced. Each had his/her own personality, but always were loving and protective. I pray you find a place in your heart for another dog. I now have a Rottie girl that has less energy than my GSDs, and better fits my retirement lifestyle.

My cane corso female is the most protective dog I’ve ever had. I thought she was extremely stubborn and she refused to walk on a leash. I unleashed her to see how she’d do and she stays at my side when I walk, or in between my legs when I stop. She’s the only dog I’ve had that watches me like a hawk. She plays with the kids, and loves on my wife, but she’s always watching me for direction. This dog has made me look like I’m some professional dog trainer, but it’s not me, it’s all her and her DNA in my opinion

I owned i kangal since he was 2 months old. Used to take him to park nearby our house when he was just a pup. One day when we were out (200m away from home) he suddenly ran back towards our house and when i took i look i saw my cousin was walking to our house for a visit. The pup made it first to our house and barked so fiercely aty cousin. Thats when i knew that we got ourselves an incredible guard dog. No training for guarding or attacking at all. He hospitalized 3-4 thieves until our neighborhood got concerned as he grew bigger and bigger and gain reputation of a killer. We got concerned too cause lot of people became interested and our dog became kinda like a tourism thing that everyone who had heard of him would want to see this terrifying guard dog that everyone's talking about. Some where coming to our house only to poke him and see his reaction behind the fence. We got concerned and relocated him to our farm where wolves were the doing lots of damage to our sheeps. We didn't wanna make him a sheepdog in that dangerous area but had no choice. He died of old age and no sheep was harmed during his time in the farm. I can't express how i miss him. Run Free my wonderful Douglas. Simply can't forget him after almost 20 years

Our Rottweiler would always place himself in front of our toddler, stand stiff legged and just stare at the front door if anyone knocked or rang the doorbell. Always had large dogs. Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Doberman, Newfoundland and last a Bullmastiff. All of them were fantastic with kids, family, friends and other dogs. We tried very hard to socialise them to every situation. But the Bullmastiff. He was exceptional! Kindest, gentlest dog I’ve ever known. He knew his size and acted accordingly. He was a peace keeper. If dogs actually fought in a park… he’d bulldoze in, head down, mouth closed and butt the offender. Just stand there proud, I’m in charge! He saved my cousin from a crazed Staffy. More importantly he saved us from a hammer wielding thug who broke into our home. He threw himself at that guy like an animal possessed. Not had a dog since. Nothing could replace that guy. I can’t speak for the breed. But he was 1 in a million!

Picking up a rescue german shepherd we noted the kennels had a six foot wall round three sides, on top there had been a 1ft of fence. We could hear barking, when we looked there was a Belgian Malenous doing a standing jump to where we could see him above the walled section. Six foot fence is nothing less than a small barrier for that breed. Gorgeous dogs yet my wife and I were both brought up with the GS breed. Our Mastiffs were fantastic as well.

Back in the Mid 1980s I owned a Neapolitan Mastiff. His name was NERO he was what they called a dilute blue (brindle) color. He looked like a marble statue. One of only 29 in North America at the time. Both his parents were from Italy. He ribboned in every IKC dog show. Winning best of breed once. He was very intelligent, emotional, loving and a natural protector. He was easy to socialize but if anyone approached me and I didn't say hello ,he wouldn't let them within 10 feet of me. If they took a step any closer he was as ferocious as any wild animal you could imagine. An amazing dog. I miss him. He almost made it to 8 years-old. God bless NERO

I have never bought a dog---all rescues or give-aways. My favorite was a Basset Hound. Loyal, loving, entertaining and protective. Anyone who met him underestimated him. He was very broad chested, strong and fast. When people thought that he was timid because he would calmly stand close but not too close, I would tell them that he wasn't shy---He is watching every move you make and if you make the wrong one, he will eat you alive. The truly amazing thing (to me) is that he lived into his nineteenth year. My kids were young when we got him and he was still around to know my two oldest grandchildren. My next favorite was a German Shepherd/Redbone Hound mix. A little odd looking---Built like a Shepherd with the color and tail of the Redbone. He was even tempered, protective, intimidating and quiet. He didn't bark--He bayed like a hound and rarely did that. We got him when my daughter was a toddler and I was pregnant with my son. I had decided to put him outside for a while when I brought my baby home for practical reasons. If my son cried, he bayed. He needed to know what was happening in the house. So, I showed the baby to him and everything was okay after that. I haven't had a dog for awhile for various reasons, including that I still miss Boze so much, but I'm getting closer to being ready. I have never sought a specific breed before, but I may this time.

She helped me alot whilst I was grieving my Dad. Then last year, very unexpectedly & sudden, my partner had a stroke & died! Shattered my world completely, I can honestly say, Kiera (dog) has been a massive comfort. Since then I seem to be incredibly anxious & am now on medication. When heart palpitations begin & I'm disorientented, shel jump up beside me, and put her huge head on my shoulder/chest area & I calm down abit. I can't put into words how much this girl means to me ❤

I have two now. you can get into my place but don't think of leaving unless you were invited because they will knock you on your ass and keep you there unless you are stupid, then, well, I think you already know. they are the hotel California dog. you can come in but you can never leave. fantastic family dog. huge pumpkin head and muscular body. keep them light until they are an adult at 2 years old. very little exercise needed and they love the family like most of the other mastiffs bully dogs. make sure you socialize them or you will have a nightmare on your hands which is true for every dog on the list. the nicest thing about them is you don't need to train to protect it is in their DNA. calmer than the other mastiffs which makes them an excellent dog for most people. calmer yes but when they need to be on, no one stands a chance against them. 😊

@@OakwiseBecomingyep and I disagree with “great with kids”, many are intolerant of children and don’t like their personal space invaded- incompatible with children who often don’t understand personal space. Also too challenging of a breed for the first time owner, however I’d also say that about some dogs on this list like the Boerboel, Dogo Argentino, Presa and Corso. The Akita is a breed that has gone terribly wrong in too many homes. 99% have attacked or even killed other dogs and many owners have gone on to get rid of the dog after it attacked the children even in the family. Very unpredictable unstable temperament also. Some days they’re friendly to any guest you introduce as friend or family, another day that same guest is one of the bad guys, and they give very little warning when they’ll strike. Not a fan of Akitas tbh. German Shepherd would be my number one on this list and show the right balance of all traits the video make looks for in a family guard dog

I have owned Akitas for the last 6 years. They are aloof and not necessarily playful with children. Also, much less affectionate than other breeds. It has a strong prey drive and should always be on leash. It is not vicious to other dogs, but definitely very dominant. I had to give away one because it was too dominant. I am very careful with 6 foot tall fencing. It will be very accomodating to anyone that approaches me in a friendly manner. it will also become friendly once that person has interacted with the dog in my presence. It is a great home and personal defence dog. Wouldn't want any other.

@pashapasovski5860 Yes they are misunderstood. I now have a labpit mix. And she is a protective loyal smart gua5d dog. There was a man walking down our road. Now we live in a rural area. So there's really no reason for anyone to be walking down our road at 5 in the evening. No one that lives on this road does this. I've never seen this man before, but he was standing in front of our yard. But yet he was still in the road looking at people's houses and yards. I let my pitbull lab mix out and she went to the edge of the yard barking furiously. Let's just say he was long about leaving in front of our. House

I own a XL American Bully female, and she is definitely a guard dog with respect to my home and myself. I had her in obedience training very early on, and socialized with people and other dogs. She is very balanced, and confident, and an alpha. She is my gentle giant, but one needs to be aware how important it is to have them trained and socialized EARLY, so you learn how to handle such a dog. I exercise her most days outside for 2-3 hours. She travels well with me, but I don't stay in places that have a weight limit for dogs. I love the bully breed the best dog ever I ever owned!! I recommend getting them from a breeder who is reputable only!!

Like your list a lot. I'm a Boerboel owner. Perfect for my farm. Good with lifestock, very dominant over his territory but outside, due to proper socialization, very well behaved. Perfect with kids, even from my friends, he let them lead him on the leash even if he could easily drag them like they're not even there. When some buyers, neighbors or workers come around, he let's me know and don't let them move to the house before I come out to allow them and tell him his job is over. For me he was not to bad to be trained but you need to be consequent and more stubborn than he is. I'm a first time owner but I had some experience with dogs and educated myself a lot before I got him. Definitely not a good pick for people who don't know what they are doing because he will take the control then.

I can tell you that they are one of the most loyal, protective and alert dogs you will find but equally great family dogs. He is my first dog and my parents never had dogs in their childhood so we went into it blind and in the video says these dogs aren't for first time owners and I do agree with this statement. Unless if you have a lot of free time or decided to hire a dog trainer, I wouldn't advise because they can be difficult, especially during their youth. They can be super aggressive towards ALL animals so a good training is a must.

My Bully never met a stranger and is friendly with all who come around, with that being said she is very fierce when defending the family and once took out a large male coyote who was apparently stalking a smaller dog we had. I owned one of those dogs & he was VERY protective of me! He even saved me from harm a couple of times! In MY opinion(& it’s just my personal opinion), size doesn’t always matter. Sure, a large dog such as a Mastiff or a German Shepherd would probably stop a person from breaking into your home with just their looks & size alone, but, smaller dogs CAN be just as good at protecting their owners/home. I personally own Cane Corsos and Akitas. I would switch the life expectancy the Akita is slightly healthier and lives a little bit longer. Another thing I would switch is the Livestock Guardian comment The Boerboel is a lot more reliable than the Cane Corso in that department. My brother in law now deceased bred German shepherds you should have mentioned that they are the least capable of defending from wild predators they usually back down and when they do engage they almost always lose and get injured in the battle.

Not going to lie. My old roommate bought a Black Lab from a hunting line back in 2008. I help him raise the dog for a while as we were both in the military. He was a beautiful, well built dog and once he gained a little size and maturity he was an absolute unit, pure man-stopper. That dog wouldn’t hesitate to act but was calm enough to take on a walk/run in the neighborhood without any incident. He understood well who was bad/not bad. I’d take him out on runs to try and tire him out and nothing would. 5 mile runs were nothing to that dog. Working dogs are the way to go for dog breeds. There were times where he would show his protective nature and it was unnerving. Only reason I wouldn’t get one today is because I know that dog would chase an intruder/attacker down and maul him.

I agree with your list but my favorite will always be a doberman, it's the only dog ever completely made as a personal protector of humans. I love this breed.....in saying that we currently have a beautiful brindle pit bull mix who's on the large size (23" and 90 lbs.) and she would defend us in any situation as

The Boerboel actually has a stronger bite force that the Kangal. They are Proven to have a bite force of 800psi and will not stop even in death when they engage. They are bread to protect South African livestock from ip to and including Lions. Two are documented. as killing a 600 pound male Lion. They protect against an entire Congress of Baboons. Not enough room here to cover their many great traits and accomplishments. Great video!
